Start with what you need from the suit—support, coverage, a comfortable torso length, adjustability, or freedom to move—and then choose colors and cuts you enjoy. Body-shape labels can offer styling ideas, but they are not rules or fit guarantees.
Choose for the way you will wear the swimsuit
Think about where you expect to wear the suit most: relaxing by the pool, swimming, or another activity. Then decide how much coverage and support feel right, and whether you want a one-piece, bikini, or tankini. A practical checklist can narrow the options before you shop:
- Support: Do you want structured cups, underwire, or a firmer under-bust band?
- Coverage: Would you prefer a fuller-coverage bottom, a skirted style, or a more minimal cut?
- Fit adjustments: Would adjustable straps or tie sides help you fine-tune the fit?
- Torso comfort: Does a one-piece feel long enough, or would a tankini give you more flexibility?
- Personal style: Which neckline, color, print, texture, or leg cut do you actually want to wear?
Kalani Miller, MIKOH co-founder, is quoted in an excerpt from the exact-title article as recommending that shoppers try “numerous different cuts — skimpy, full-coverage.” The excerpt’s useful point is that a cut may feel different on than it looks on a hanger; it is not a promise that any particular silhouette will suit everyone. Read the quoted excerpt.
Compare suit features, not just body-shape labels
These fit considerations can help you compare women’s swimsuits. Retailer and brand guides offer styling suggestions, not independent proof that a particular design is best for a particular body.

If bust support is a priority
Look for construction details such as under-bust banding, power mesh, wider straps, molded or structured cups, and bra-sized or underwire styles. Everything But Water describes its MaxSwim collection as offering C–G cup bikinis; that is the retailer’s product description, not an independent assessment of fit or support. Check the sizing and construction of the specific suit you are considering. See Everything But Water’s MaxSwim collection and its swimwear fit guide.
If one-piece suits feel short through the torso
Everything But Water’s guide suggests looking for generous stretch and length, less compression or minimal inner construction, or choosing a tankini or adjustable straps for more customizable comfort. These are shopping pointers, not a ranking of brands or a guarantee that a suit will fit a particular torso. Read the retailer’s fit guidance.

If you want more bottom coverage
A skirted bottom is one option; the retailer guide suggests a skirt that reaches the upper thigh. You could also compare fuller-coverage bikini bottoms or a one-piece. Choose the amount and placement of coverage that feels secure and comfortable to you. See the styling guidance.
If you want to adjust the visual emphasis
Color and detail can direct attention without changing fit. The retailer guide suggests pairing a darker bottom with a brighter or more detailed top for fuller hips, and using a simpler, darker top with more visual interest on the bottom for broader shoulders and narrower hips. It also suggests open necklines as a styling option for those who want a less enclosed look at the shoulders. These are optional aesthetic ideas, not body corrections. Read the guide.

- Chlorine resistant; Durable polyester fabric last longer than traditional Nylon fabric
- Fully lined prevents fabric transparency and offers support
- Built-in shelf bra with soft removable cups
- Adjustable shoulder straps give you a custom fit
- Medium neckline, keyhole back, and moderate leg cut
If you have a short torso or petite frame
High-leg cuts, plunging necklines, and fewer horizontal seams are suggested as ways to create a longer visual line. For petite frames, the same guide mentions smaller prints and clean lines. Treat these as styling options; they do not establish how a suit will fit your measurements. See the retailer’s suggestions.
If you prefer an athletic or straight silhouette
Texture, bold prints, horizontal stripes, ruffles, and side ties can add visual dimension if that is the look you want. A boy-short bottom is another option for a sportier style. Consider whether the suit also gives you the movement, coverage, and support you want. Read the fit guide.

Use body-shape categories as optional styling shorthand
Banana Moon groups suggestions by A-, V-, H-, and X-shaped or figure-8 proportions: detailed tops with understated bottoms for A-shaped proportions; tie-side or printed bottoms for V-shaped proportions; cut-outs, belts, or texture for straighter H-shaped silhouettes; and a choice based on support and personal style for X-shaped or figure-8 silhouettes. These are the brand’s styling recommendations, not rules for what someone should wear. See Banana Moon’s guide.

Mastectomy and insert coverage
Everything But Water’s guide notes that high or straight necklines may offer more coverage, while triangle or deep-plunge styles may not conceal inserts sufficiently. Suit construction and personal needs vary, so inspect the specific design and check whether it offers the coverage and features you need. Read the retailer’s guidance.

Pregnancy and postpartum comfort
The retailer guide points to crinkle-stretch swimwear and tankinis as options that may provide comfort or room through the torso, while emphasizing personal preference. Use those features as a starting point, then assess how the suit feels on your body. See the fit guide.
Try on a range of cuts and check the fit
When possible, try different silhouettes rather than ruling one out based on a body-shape label. Move in the suit and check that the straps, cups, band, and bottom stay where you want them. A useful fit is one that feels comfortable and secure for the way you plan to wear it; no style needs to slim, hide, or reshape you to be the right choice.
