Rather than present 21 unverified lines as authentic, this guide shows how to check Ford quotations and explains the documented example in its original context.
Why this is not a verified list of 21 quotes
The title asks for 21 quotations, but the available primary-source evidence does not establish a complete, authoritative set of 21. A line appearing on a quote page is not proof that Ford said it, or that the wording is exact; familiar versions can differ, and the source histories of some sayings are uncertain. A responsible collection should verify each line individually rather than fill a quota with claims that cannot be substantiated.

A useful starting point is Project Gutenberg’s searchable transcription of My Life and Work, credited to Henry Ford in collaboration with Samuel Crowther. For a quotation found in the book, cite the book and give chapter-level context where possible. If a line is not verified in a primary source, label it as an uncertain attribution or omit it; if its wording has been shortened or restated, identify it as a paraphrase rather than putting it in quotation marks as Ford’s exact words.

— Henry Ford, My Life and Work
In the book, Ford makes this point while discussing fear of the future and fear of failure. The surrounding passage continues: “There is no disgrace in honest failure; there is disgrace in fearing to fail.” Read in context, the first sentence is part of an argument against letting fear prevent action—not a promise that every failed attempt will lead to success. The source and surrounding passage can be checked in the book text.
How to assess a quote attributed to Ford
- Look for a primary source. A quotation in My Life and Work has a clearer documentary basis than one repeated only by later quote collections.
- Check the exact wording. Compare the quotation with the source text. If it differs, do not present the altered version as a verbatim quotation.
- Keep its context. A sentence about failure, work, or business can acquire a different meaning when separated from the argument around it.
- Be transparent about uncertainty. If a reliable source for the wording or attribution cannot be established, say so plainly or leave the line out.
