No available reporting establishes that Mary J. Blige went “completely broke” after a judge ordered her to pay $30,000 a month in temporary spousal support during her divorce. The order was reported in 2017, while the case was pending; the divorce was reported finalized in June 2018. Separate reports described substantial tax debt as well as substantial monthly income, but neither figure by itself proves insolvency.

Was Mary J. Blige ordered to pay her ex-husband $30,000 a month?

Yes. Entertainment Tonight reported in June 2017 that a judge ordered Blige to pay Martin “Kendu” Isaacs $30,000 a month in temporary spousal support while their divorce proceedings continued. ET said Isaacs had initially sought $129,319 per month, a different figure from the temporary award.

The order was not the only amount reported. ET also said the court awarded $135,000 in retroactive support dating back to September 1, 2016, and $100,000 for attorney’s fees and expert costs. Those were separate reported awards, not additional monthly support.

Was the $30,000 monthly payment permanent?

It was reported as temporary support during the divorce, not as a permanent final judgment. The 2017 order was intended to address Isaacs’s accustomed standard of living and help level the playing field while the proceedings continued, according to ET’s account and BET’s report.

Blige filed for divorce in July 2016 after nearly 13 years of marriage, ET reported. She argued that a prenuptial agreement waived support; Isaacs disputed the agreement’s validity. UPI reported in June 2018 that the divorce was finalized. The available reporting does not establish the precise support terms, if any, in the final settlement, so the 2017 temporary order should not be presented as a current obligation.

Did the reported tax debt mean Blige was broke?

Not on its own. TheGrio reported in August 2017 that a financial declaration filed in the divorce listed $6.5 million in IRS back taxes for 2008–2016 and monthly income of $326,930. Those figures are attributed to TheGrio’s account of the filing; the filing itself is not independently established here.

Debt and income are both relevant to financial strain, but neither establishes whether someone is insolvent. A reported tax liability does not show a person’s full assets, other obligations, cash flow, or ability to pay. Likewise, reported monthly income does not reveal net worth or prove that financial pressures were manageable. The available figures therefore do not support the categorical claim that Blige was completely broke.

What did Blige say about the finances?

ET quoted a statement from Blige’s court filing: “My success as an entertainer has nothing to do with [Isaacs]. I was successful when I met him and have continued to enjoy success, although there have certainly been ups and downs.” That is a statement attributed to her filing, not a separate interview or an independent finding about the couple’s finances.

E! News reported that Blige’s court papers said: “[Isaacs] suggests we lived a lavish lifestyle and in fact, we over spent and we are in significant debt.” E! also reported her claim that the couple owed millions in taxes and had record-company advances to recoup. These are claims attributed to court papers, not independently verified findings about the couple’s complete financial position.
