How to Compare Fixed Deposits When Interest Rates Are Changing

Compare fixed deposits on matching terms, then check rate certainty, maturity cash flow, early-access costs and renewal conditions.

Compare fixed deposits on the same amount, currency, term, eligibility category and opening date. Then look past the headline rate: check whether it is fixed or variable, how interest is paid, what you receive at maturity, what early access costs and what rate applies if the deposit renews. Because deposit rules, taxes and protection vary by country, use local terms for those checks.

Start with an apples-to-apples comparison

Build a shortlist of offers that match on the features that determine the rate and the contract. A rate for a different term, deposit size or customer category is not a fair comparison.

  • Amount: Use the same principal and check whether the bank has rate bands, minimums or maximums.
  • Currency: Compare deposits in the same currency; a foreign-currency offer adds exchange-rate exposure that a domestic-currency rate does not capture.
  • Term: Match the maturity date or tenor as closely as possible. A one-year offer and a two-year offer do not provide the same access or rate exposure.
  • Eligibility: Check whether the quoted rate depends on age, account type, residency or another qualification.
  • Date: Record the rate sheet’s effective date and compare offers available on the same day. Banks can revise rates, and a renewal may use a different rate from the original deposit.

For example, Central Bank of India’s domestic term-deposit table effective 10 August 2026 separates general-public and senior-citizen rates for deposits below ₹3 crore. In its one-year to under-two-year band, the listed rates are 6.10% for the general public and 6.60% for senior citizens, with annualised yields of 6.24% and 6.77%, respectively. Those are dated examples from one bank, not market averages or recommendations; check the bank’s current rate sheet before relying on them. Central Bank of India rate table

Decide how much rate certainty you need

Fixed-rate deposits

A fixed rate sets the contracted interest rate for the agreed term, making the return more predictable if you keep the deposit to maturity. If market offers rise, you generally cannot switch to a new rate without checking the cost and availability of early withdrawal. If offers fall, the contracted rate can remain in place for the term. These are possible outcomes, not forecasts about where rates will go. The Bank of Israel’s consumer guidance describes the fixed-rate deposit as providing certainty about what will be received at maturity. Bank of Israel deposit guidance

Variable-rate deposits

A variable rate can change during the term according to the contract. Before comparing one with a fixed offer, identify the named benchmark or formula, the margin above or below it, reset dates, and any floor or cap. The Bank of Israel gives its own policy rate as the reference for the variable deposits it describes; that is an Israeli example, not a universal convention. The exact reset mechanics must come from the specific deposit contract.

Staggered maturities

Splitting savings among deposits with different maturity dates can create more frequent opportunities to access some money or reassess rates. It does not guarantee a higher return than putting the same amount into one deposit. Compare the staggered schedule with your expected cash needs and the rates available for each tenor.

Translate the advertised rate into money and timing

A headline percentage does not tell you when interest arrives or the amount available on the date you need it. For each offer, write down the contracted rate, any annualised yield shown, the interest-payment schedule and the maturity amount. Ask the bank for a maturity-value illustration using your principal and exact term if the rate sheet does not show one.

Interest may be paid periodically or added to the deposit and paid at maturity; the two arrangements can produce different cash flows. Central Bank of India’s FDR page, for example, says simple interest is credited half-yearly in March and September or on maturity, whichever is earlier. That is a bank-specific arrangement, not a general fixed-deposit rule. Central Bank of India FDR terms

When comparing offers, confirm whether “rate” means a nominal contracted rate or an annualised yield, and understand any compounding assumptions behind the yield. Do not compare a periodic payout with a maturity payout using the percentages alone: compare the timing and amount of each cash flow, including whether interest paid out can itself earn interest elsewhere.

Check what early access really costs

Read the withdrawal clause before depositing money you might need before maturity. Check whether early withdrawal is allowed, whether notice or specified exit dates apply, how much interest is forfeited or repriced, and whether a penalty is charged. A higher rate may not be worthwhile if access is important and an early exit would materially reduce the return.

Rules differ by product and jurisdiction. The Bank of Israel warns that early withdrawal may carry a penalty. Central Bank of India states a 1% penal interest rate for premature withdrawal of time deposits and says non-callable deposits generally do not allow early withdrawal, subject to stated exceptions. Its Flexi Yield page says an early payment is treated as a normal deposit and extra interest already paid is recovered; the page does not establish a particular reset interval. These terms apply to the named bank’s products, not to fixed deposits generally. Central Bank of India rates and terms Central Bank of India Flexi Yield scheme

As a regulatory reference for India, the Reserve Bank of India defines a term deposit as money received for a fixed period and generally withdrawable only after that period expires; its circular says a bank may set its own premature-withdrawal penalty rate. Check the current rule and applicable bank terms before treating this circular as legal advice. Reserve Bank of India circular

Know what happens at maturity

Find out whether the deposit ends with a payment to your account or renews automatically, and whether a renewal carries forward principal alone or principal plus interest. Check the renewal tenor and the rate that will apply then; do not assume the original rate continues. Central Bank of India says automatic renewal is available by depositor instruction and that its revised rates apply to fresh deposits and renewals. Its FDR page also states a minimum term of 7 days and maximum of 120 months, but those are terms of that bank’s product, not general limits. Set a reminder before maturity if you want to compare current offers or direct the proceeds elsewhere. A deposit renewed automatically may lock your money into a new term at the rate and conditions then available.

Compare the whole offer, not just the rate

After matching rate, term and cash flows, consider whether the account is practical and appropriate for you. Check account-opening eligibility, required banking relationship, service access and the local rules that affect the deposit.

  • Tax: Interest taxation and withholding rules depend on your tax residence and jurisdiction.
  • Deposit protection: Verify whether a guarantee or insurance scheme applies, its limits and eligibility, and whether limits are per depositor, institution or account under local rules.
  • Terms and safeguards: Read the contract and regulator disclosures for restrictions, exceptions and complaint routes.
  • Negotiation: Some banks may consider rate or term requests; the Bank of Israel advises depositors to compare other banks’ terms and rates and notes they may negotiate. Bank of Israel deposit guidance

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Choose the principal, currency, tenor, customer category and intended opening date you want to compare.
  2. Collect dated rate sheets or written quotations for offers matching those details.
  3. Mark each offer as fixed or variable. For a variable offer, record the benchmark, margin, reset schedule, floor and cap from its terms.
  4. Record the nominal rate, annualised yield if provided, payout schedule and maturity amount for the same principal and term.
  5. Read early-withdrawal conditions, including notice, permitted exit dates, penalties and interest loss.
  6. Confirm maturity instructions, renewal amount, renewal tenor and the rate-setting method for a rollover.
  7. Check local tax treatment, deposit protection, eligibility and any required account relationship.
  8. Recheck the effective date and contract before opening; repeat the check before allowing an automatic renewal.
