There is no single switch that stops all collection. This guide covers the controls Amazon documents for its US website and Alexa devices, and explains what each one does not cover.
Start with the right control for the information you want to manage
Amazon’s controls are organized by service and data type. A preference change affects how a feature works; deleting a history item removes specified information; and a formal privacy request is a separate process that may depend on applicable law.

Manage account information on Amazon’s website
Go to Your Account to review account information and settings. Amazon’s Privacy Notice says this area includes name, address, payment options, profile information, Prime membership, household settings, and purchase history. Account settings are not a complete inventory of every data category Amazon may hold or process.
Amazon says it usually keeps a prior version of account information when you update it. Changing an address or other detail therefore should not be treated as a request to erase its earlier version.

Adjust browsing history and recommendations
Remove browsing-history items
Use Your Browsing History to manage items shown in your Amazon browsing history. This is a history control, not a promise that all records connected to a visit are erased.
Change recommendations
Use Improve Your Recommendations to manage recommendation inputs, including removing an item from recommendations. This affects personalization; it does not amount to opting out of every use of account or shopping information.

Understand cookies before blocking them
Amazon identifies browser cookie controls as another way to limit linking website browsing to an account, particularly when you sign out and block cookies. Cookies also support core shopping and sign-in features. Blocking them may interfere with your cart, checkout, sign-in, or other essential functionality, and it is not a universal way to prevent Amazon from processing data.
Review and delete Alexa history
For US Alexa users, Amazon directs customers to Alexa Privacy Settings, or to More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app or on an Echo Show. Labels can vary by device and software version. Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs describe the available history and privacy controls.

Choose how long Alexa recordings are kept
Amazon says customers can review and delete cloud voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests. The automatic-deletion options described by Amazon are three or eighteen months. Customers can also choose not to save voice recordings. With that choice, Amazon says transcripts and typed requests may remain for 30 days after the last request in a chat.
Know what Alexa-history deletion does not cover
Amazon cautions that deleting the listed Alexa history does not necessarily delete every record related to an interaction. Other records may include attachments, information you supplied, actions taken, product searches, data held by third-party skill developers, or information stored outside Amazon’s cloud. Processing a deletion may also take time.

Check other Alexa privacy choices separately
Alexa Privacy settings also cover controls such as smart-home history and permissions related to skills and ads. These settings address distinct data uses; changing one should not be assumed to change the others.

Amazon says customers can opt out of interest-based ads delivered by Amazon on Alexa. That choice does not mean Alexa will show no ads, and it does not necessarily remove personalized recommendations. For details about Alexa ad preferences, use the Alexa Privacy controls described in Amazon’s Alexa FAQ.

Echo Show sponsored ads
Amazon’s US Echo Show help page says sponsored ads cannot be turned off. You can hide an individual ad for 30 days; Amazon also says you can skip an ad by swiping from right to left on the screen. Hiding one ad is not the same as disabling sponsored ads generally.
Request access to or deletion of personal information
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says customers may have rights to request access to or deletion of personal information to the extent required by applicable law. Amazon directs customers to Data Privacy Queries for such requests. The right and the information covered depend on the law that applies; this is not an unconditional global guarantee that every category can be deleted.
What to expect from these settings
- A preference is not deletion: opting out of interest-based ads or changing recommendations changes a specified use or feature, not necessarily the underlying records.
- History deletion has a defined scope: for Alexa in particular, Amazon identifies related records and third-party data that may not be removed with the listed history.
- Cookie blocking has trade-offs: it can affect basic shopping functions and does not stop every form of data processing.
- Rights depend on location: use Amazon’s formal request route to pursue access or deletion rights available under applicable law.
Amazon’s Privacy Notice and Alexa help pages can change, and app or device menus may differ by software version. Confirm the labels shown on your own device before changing a setting.
