Seiko’s latest reported results show its completed-watch business growing, not contracting. In the April–June 2026 quarter, Seiko Group said Global Brands drove significant year-on-year growth, with Prospex among the strong performers. That suggests how the company is positioning its watch business—but neither proves there is a broad watch-market slump nor guarantees Seiko’s future performance.

What Seiko’s latest results actually show

Seiko Group’s fiscal 2026 first quarter covered April 1 through June 30, 2026. In its presentation published August 10, the company reported consolidated net sales of ¥99.1 billion, up 28.5% year on year, and consolidated operating profit of ¥15.4 billion, up 88.8%. Those are figures for the diversified group, not the watch business alone: Seiko also operates in areas such as device and system solutions, clocks, and fashion-related activities. Seiko Group’s FY2026 Q1 presentation gives the group totals and its account of watch sales.

Separately, Seiko said completed-watch sales grew significantly year on year, attributing the increase to strong sales of its Global Brands in Japan and overseas. The cited presentation describes the direction of watch sales but does not provide a single watch-only sales total in the relevant text. The group’s overall growth figures therefore should not be read as watch revenue or watch profit.

Seiko’s results also do not establish the title’s market-wide premise. The company reported growth in its own watch business; the sources here do not provide an independent time series showing whether the broader watch market is in a slump. A company can grow in a weak market, but Seiko’s results alone cannot show that this is what happened.

The strategy: sell a portfolio of global brands

Seiko’s reported approach is not simply a choice between affordable Seiko watches and luxury Grand Seiko. Its FY2026 Q1 presentation groups six labels under Global Brands: Grand Seiko, King Seiko, Seiko Prospex, Seiko Astron, Seiko Presage, and Seiko 5 Sports. The company said this group of brands drove its completed-watch sales growth, with Prospex a notable contributor across several regions.

In its Value Report 2025, Seiko Group says it has pursued a Global Brands strategy since Grand Seiko became an independent brand in 2017. It describes the goal as delivering emotional and experiential value, and points to rising sales and profits as evidence of progress. Those are the company’s stated strategy and assessment, not an independent evaluation or proof that the approach will keep working.

The portfolio gives Seiko several ways to reach customers, from Grand Seiko’s premium positioning to sport, dress, and other watch lines. Seiko describes its business as combining advanced technology and craftsmanship, drawing on its status as one of the few fully integrated watch manufacturers. Its Watch Business page also presents King Seiko, Prospex, Astron, and Presage as part of its wristwatch lineup.

Where Seiko says growth came from

Seiko’s regional account in the FY2026 Q1 presentation varies by market. These are management’s observations for the quarter, not a complete or independently measured survey of demand.

Region What Seiko reported Named drivers
Japan Grand Seiko grew significantly, alongside strong performance from Seiko Global Brands. Seiko cited strong inbound and steady domestic demand for Grand Seiko. Prospex led Seiko Global Brands performance, which the company said also benefited from advertising campaigns.
Americas Grand Seiko significantly outperformed the prior year on focus-model sales; Seiko Global Brands remained solid. Seiko named Prospex, Presage, and Seiko 5 Sports among the strong Global Brands performers.
Europe Grand Seiko was in line with the previous year, while Seiko Global Brands performed strongly. Seiko cited signs of luxury-market recovery and named Prospex, Presage, and Seiko 5 Sports as strong performers. Italy and the UK were particularly strong.
Asia and other markets Both Grand Seiko and Seiko Global Brands grew significantly in India; Seiko also saw early signs of recovery in Taiwan and Thailand. The company linked the Taiwan and Thailand signs to distribution restructuring.

For regional growth charts, Seiko labels some comparisons as constant-currency. The regional descriptions above are qualitative; they should not be mistaken for watch-unit growth, market share, or a region-by-region profitability comparison.

What could make this approach resilient—and what remains unknown

Brand breadth and geographic reach could help Seiko avoid relying on one label or one local market. The quarter’s account points to different contributors: inbound and domestic demand in Japan, selected Seiko lines in the Americas and Europe, and growth across both Grand Seiko and Seiko Global Brands in India. That is a plausible resilience mechanism, not evidence that all lines or markets are equally profitable.

The company also says its MVP Strategy prioritizes moving, valuable, and profitable products and services. Its Global Brands strategy and MVP framework are statements of corporate intent. The cited disclosures do not establish model-level margins, unit volumes, market share, or a financial comparison between Grand Seiko and Seiko’s other lines, so they cannot show which products are carrying profits or how durable the recent growth is.

Seiko’s FY2026 full-year forecast in the Q1 presentation was ¥375.0 billion in net sales and ¥41.0 billion in operating profit. These are forecasts, not achieved results; the company said the forecast includes an expected U.S. tariff-refund impact of approximately ¥2.2 billion. One quarter’s performance and a company forecast cannot prove future survival.

The relevant planning horizon also matters. Seiko’s official mid-term plan page identifies Seiko Milestone 145 as the FY2022–FY2026 plan, with initiatives for FY2024–FY2026. It should not be treated as a confirmed post-FY2026 plan. Seiko Group’s mid-term plan page identifies that period.
