To pay for a U.S. subscription from India without unnecessary currency-conversion fees, first confirm the provider accepts an Indian card for recurring international payments, then compare the checkout currency with your card issuer’s current foreign-transaction charges. A zero-markup card can remove an issuer fee, but it cannot guarantee that a merchant will accept the card or that the renewal mandate will work.
What to check before you subscribe
- Check payment acceptance. Look at the provider’s payment instructions or ask its support team whether it accepts cards issued in India for recurring payments. Do not assume a card works just because it can make other international purchases.
- Check the billing currency. At checkout, note whether the merchant will charge in U.S. dollars or offer another currency. Compare the amount shown with your issuer’s terms; the available evidence does not establish that a merchant’s conversion option is always cheaper.
- Read your issuer’s current fee schedule. Check the foreign-currency transaction fee or markup, the exchange-rate terms, and any other applicable charges. Product marketing alone is not enough to establish your all-in cost.
- Confirm recurring-payment support. Check whether your issuer lets you register or manage the required mandate and whether the merchant processes recurring charges under applicable rules.
Acceptance and cost are separate questions: a card may have low foreign-transaction charges yet fail at a particular merchant, while an accepted card may still add issuer fees.
Compare the payment routes

How recurring card charges work in India
RBI’s recurring-card framework includes additional-factor authentication and e-mandate controls. The RBI circular dated August 22, 2024, states that an issuer must send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before an actual charge or debit. This does not mean every foreign subscription renewal requires an OTP each time, nor does it mean international recurring subscriptions are all prohibited. If an international subscription payment declines
- Confirm that international online transactions are enabled for the card.
- Review the issuer’s recurring-mandate controls or contact the issuer to ask whether a mandate is registered and whether an authentication step is needed.
- Check with the subscription provider that it accepts cards issued in India and supports recurring charges on that payment method.
- If both sides appear to support the payment, ask the issuer and merchant which part of the authorization or mandate setup failed. Switching cards may not solve a problem caused by merchant configuration.

What a zero-markup claim does—and does not—tell you
Federal Bank’s Scapia product page advertises zero forex markup on international transactions and zero joining and annual fees. Its credit-card charges schedule, effective April 1, 2026, lists nil foreign-currency transaction charges for Scapia. This is a concrete example of how to check a product claim against an issuer fee schedule, not a guarantee of a particular subscription’s acceptance or of the lowest total conversion cost.
