Neither Google Search nor Bing is an evidence-based winner for everyone. The better choice depends on which one gives you more useful results for your searches, which features you want, and how its privacy controls fit your needs. Try the same searches in both before changing your default.
How to compare Google Search and Bing for your needs
Search results can change with the query, location, language, device, time, and personalization. Google says these factors can contribute to differences in results; Microsoft says Bing uses query matching alongside signals such as search history, location, language, and device characteristics. A comparison is most useful when you hold those conditions steady.
- Choose representative searches. Include a local-information query, a current event, a product comparison, and a specialized question you actually ask.
- Keep the conditions consistent. Use the same wording, location, language, and device in each engine. Compare results at roughly the same time.
- Judge usefulness, not just the first link. Consider whether the results answer your question, whether the sources are relevant, and how much effort it takes to reach a trustworthy answer.
- Repeat for queries that matter. A single search is not enough to establish which service works better for your mix of tasks.
Neither provider publishes a neutral, directly comparable head-to-head score that establishes which engine returns higher-quality results overall. Google explains why results can differ in Why your Google Search results differ from others; Microsoft describes Bing’s approach in How Bing delivers search results.
What differs in AI search and assistance?
Both services offer AI-assisted features, but their capabilities and availability change. Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement described upgrades to AI Mode and new agentic capabilities. The announcement notes that rollout, geographic availability, and subscription requirements can vary by feature. Microsoft’s Bing support documentation describes AI summaries as well as AI-generated Shopping buying guides and review summaries.

How do their privacy controls compare?
Neither service should be described simply as private or non-private on the basis of one setting. Personalization controls and stored search history are different things, and each service’s controls have limits.
Google Search
Google’s Personalized Recommendations control affects personalization, but turning it off does not pause or delete activity saved to your account. Google also says some contextual signals may continue to affect results. See Personalization & Google Search results for the control’s scope and limitations.

Bing
Microsoft says signed-in Bing search activity can be reviewed and cleared in the Privacy Dashboard. Signed-out searches are not shown there, and some copies may remain in backups for a limited time. Details are in How Microsoft stores and maintains your search history.
If your priority is limiting personalization, look at the settings that control it. If your priority is removing saved activity, check the separate history and account controls. Do not assume that changing one setting does both.

What about shopping, local information, and safety features?
Bing documents SafeSearch, labeled paid results, Shopping features, and suggestions. Microsoft says compensation does not affect organic blue-link rankings and revenue share does not determine coupon rankings. Google highlights direct information in Search, including local business details and weather. These descriptions explain what each provider offers; they are not independent endorsements or proof that one service is better for every shopping or local search.
See Microsoft’s Bing results documentation and Google’s Google Search Overview and Improvements for provider details.

Do market figures show that Google or Bing is better?
No. Market presence is not a measure of relevance, accuracy, privacy, or satisfaction, and the available figures cover different populations and periods.
| Figure | Scope and meaning | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| More than 90% | The European Commission describes Google Search as having more than 90% market share in Europe for decades. The Commission’s final decision on Google Search data sharing under the Digital Markets Act was adopted July 16, 2026. See Alphabet specification proceedings – Sharing of Google Search data. | It is not a fresh global market-share comparison or a search-quality score. |
| 124 million average monthly active users | Microsoft reported this Bing figure for the EU activity period August 2023–June 2024. It counts EU users who queried Bing and viewed a desktop results page at least once in a month; Microsoft notes the group can include light users. See its August 2024 Bing Systemic Risk Assessment Report under the EU Digital Services Act. | It does not measure current worldwide usage or show which engine gives better results. |
A January 2025 MIT Department of Economics working paper reported that surveyed Bing users strongly preferred Bing for rewards and slightly preferred it for overall quality, result-page features, AI integration, and privacy. Respondents rated the relevance of links and ads similarly. Those are participants’ perceptions, not a controlled test proving that Bing or Google is objectively better for everyone. See Search Market.
Which search engine should you use?
Choose the service that performs better for the searches you actually make and whose features and controls suit you. If you are undecided, test both with a small set of recurring searches, compare the usefulness of their results and AI features, and inspect the privacy settings relevant to your preferences. You can also use both: keep one as your default and open the other when a result is incomplete or unhelpful.
