Before changing an automatic loan payment, read the lender’s name-change or servicing-transfer notice and check its effective date. A new name alone does not tell you whether your payment instructions changed: the lender may keep its existing draft, require a new authorization, or ask you to enroll again. If you pay through your bank’s bill-pay service, you may need to update the payee and loan details separately.
First, find out what changed
Use the official name-change, welcome, or servicing-transfer notice for your account. Look for the effective date, the first payment due to the new lender or servicer, and explicit instructions for automatic payments. The transition notice—not the name change by itself—determines what to do.
Compare the notice with your current payment setup. Check the payee or servicer name, loan or account number, payment address, online account or login, and the date the new arrangement takes effect. For example, Rocket Mortgage tells borrowers to update payment information when a new servicer and loan number apply, and Fifth Third says its transition letter provides the new lender name, address, and mortgage account number for bank bill pay.
Keep the notice and any confirmation of changed payment instructions. If a detail is unclear or the notice does not say whether your existing payment transfers, ask the new servicer to confirm before changing or recreating the payment.

Identify how your recurring payment is made
“Autopay” can refer to two different arrangements. In lender-managed autopay, you authorize the lender or servicer to withdraw funds from your bank account. In bank bill pay, you schedule a recurring payment through your bank, which sends it using the payee information you entered. A servicing transition can affect these arrangements differently.
| Payment method | Who controls the recurring instruction? | What to check after a name change or transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Lender- or servicer-managed autopay | The lender or servicer drafts your bank account under your authorization. | Whether the draft transferred, needs a new agreement, or requires re-enrollment; confirm the next draft date and status with the servicer. |
| Bank bill pay | Your bank sends payments using the payee and loan details you supplied. | Whether the notice requires a new payee, loan or account number, or payment address; update the bank’s recurring entry if instructed. |
Chase says that, in the mortgage servicing-transfer situation described in its transfer FAQs, third-party bill-pay entries need the new servicer and loan number, while lender-managed autopay may transfer, require a new agreement, or need new enrollment. Fifth Third gives a similar distinction: recurring payments established through Onity transferred to Fifth Third, but customers using another bank’s bill-pay feature must update payee details.

Update the payment using the notice’s instructions
- For lender-managed autopay: Sign in to the new lender or servicer account, or contact the servicer, and check whether your existing authorization is active. Follow its instructions to keep the draft, authorize a replacement, or enroll again. Do not assume that the old profile will continue or be canceled automatically.
- For bank bill pay: Open your bank’s bill-pay settings and compare the recurring payee entry with the transition notice. Change the payee, loan number, or payment address if instructed. If the new servicer says to cancel the former payee and create a new one, follow that process rather than merely renaming the old entry.
- Confirm the next payment: Sign in to the new lender or servicer account, or contact its customer service, to verify the payment method, enrollment status, next scheduled date, and destination. Happen Bank’s page for the Santander Consumer USA transition, for example, says borrowers can review and manage transferred auto-loan autopay in MyAccount; its instructions separately tell bank bill-pay users to list Santander Consumer USA as payee.
Do not send a payment to new details based only on an unexpected message. Verify the instructions using the official notice or the lender or servicer’s established account and contact channels.
Give changes enough time to take effect
Cancellation and setup deadlines depend on the lender and payment date. Wells Fargo says to allow at least three business days before a scheduled withdrawal when canceling autopay for a Wells Fargo Auto loan. That is a Wells Fargo-specific instruction, not a general deadline. Check your own servicer’s timing before canceling a draft or setting up a replacement, especially when a payment date is near.

What the examples do—and do not—establish
Official lender guidance illustrates why the account-specific notice matters: Chase and Rocket Mortgage address mortgage servicing transfers, while the Happen Bank/Santander and Wells Fargo pages address auto-loan payment arrangements. Their instructions are examples, not universal rules for every lender, loan type, or name change. Your notice or confirmation from your current servicer governs the effective date, payee, account number, payment address, transfer status, and any applicable fees, grace periods, or transition protections.
