India’s formal flexi-staffing market grew in Q1 FY27, the April–June 2026 quarter: the Indian Staffing Federation (ISF) reported 2.6% quarter-on-quarter growth and 7.5% year-on-year growth among its member firms. Manufacturing and consumer-facing sectors drove much of the general-staffing demand. IT staffing also increased, but June’s rise in AI and machine-learning roles came alongside a reported fall in overall IT hiring—not a broad technology boom.
Did flexi staffing recover in Q1 FY27?
Yes. ISF reported that employment at its member staffing firms rose 2.6% from the preceding quarter and 7.5% from the same quarter a year earlier. The federation also reported 1.14 lakh net new formal flexi jobs across the four quarters and 1.95 million formal flexi workers at member firms in Q1 FY27. These are ISF-member figures, not a census of every staffing provider or flexi worker in India.
The quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year rates answer different questions: the first indicates a sequential pickup, while the second compares with April–June 2025. ISF’s current staffing-industry research summary reports the headline figures.
Which sectors drove flexi-staffing growth in India?
Manufacturing led volume demand
Manufacturing was described as the largest volume driver, with demand reported in auto components, electrical and electronics assembly, and food processing. Business Standard’s account of the ISF report says production, manufacturing and engineering hiring rose 14% in June 2026. That is a month-specific figure, not a growth rate for the entire quarter.

Consumer-facing and logistics work added demand
Consumer, retail and telecom supported general staffing. E-commerce, quick commerce, logistics and road transport were also among the stronger demand sectors, despite April–June falling outside the usual festive-season hiring cycle. The report described manufacturing and consumer sectors as the volume engine for general staffing.
Other sectors showed mixed, month-specific results
Business Standard reported that healthcare, pharma and life sciences hiring rose 22% in June 2026. Insurance hiring increased 16% in June, while banking hiring fell 15% in May. These figures refer to particular months and should not be read as quarter-wide sector growth.
How did IT staffing perform in Q1 FY27?
ISF reported that IT staffing grew 2% quarter-on-quarter and 7% year-on-year, below neither the overall market’s sequential rate nor its annual rate in a way that establishes a uniform technology upswing. The figures describe staffing employment at ISF member firms, not all technology hiring in India.
A separate June comparison underscores the difference between specialist and broad demand: Business Standard’s account of the ISF findings says AI and machine-learning roles grew 25% year-on-year in June 2026, while overall IT hiring reportedly fell 3%. Specialist hiring can rise even when the wider category contracts. The report also said global capability centres (GCCs) accounted for 45–67% of its specialised staffing associates and revenue, and characterized GCC hiring as sustained over several quarters.

What does flexi staffing mean?
Flexi staffing is temporary hiring for a fixed period or until a project is completed, as defined in Business Standard’s coverage of the report. It lets employers add workers for changing operational or project needs; the term describes the arrangement, not a guarantee that every role has the same duration or employment conditions.

The quarter’s report surveyed more than 120 ISF member staffing companies across 15 sectors, collecting primary inputs through an email survey over 60 days, according to Business Standard’s October 6, 2026 account. The results therefore describe the federation’s member-firm reporting, rather than a complete count of India’s formal or informal workforce.
