One secondary market-data report said Intel fell 3.2% to $112.50, while an Associated Press report described a pullback in the broader U.S. market but did not report Intel or a semiconductor benchmark. Without matching, same-session data for Intel and a named chip index, neither an outperformance claim nor a cause is verified.
What happened to Intel stock on October 7?
BestStocks reported Intel at $112.50 on October 7, down 3.2% from a prior close of $116.19. The outlet characterized Intel as underperforming peers and labeled its signal quality low, so this is a provisional price snapshot rather than a definitive account of the session. BestStocks’ October 7 report
The Associated Press reported that U.S. stocks were lower in early trading: the S&P 500 fell 0.5%, the Dow 0.9%, and the Nasdaq 0.7%. It attributed the broader pullback to rising Treasury yields and higher oil prices amid uncertainty around the Iran conflict. The report did not give Intel’s return or the performance of a semiconductor index. Associated Press market report
Those figures do not establish that Intel was up, or that it fell less than chip stocks. The Intel snapshot and the AP’s early-market figures also do not establish a consistent comparison window.

How to tell whether Intel outperformed chip stocks
“Defying a slump” can mean two different things: Intel rose while a chip benchmark fell, or Intel fell but lost less than that benchmark. The first is an absolute gain; the second is relative outperformance. A valid comparison needs Intel and a named semiconductor benchmark—such as the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index—measured over the same period and at the same timestamp. Comparing an intraday quote with another asset’s closing return can produce a misleading result.
The October 7 reports cited here do not provide that matched comparison. Reuters reported in July that the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had fallen more than 11% from its June record amid volatility and concerns about valuations and the durability of AI-related capital spending. That is historical context, not evidence that chip stocks were down on October 7. Reuters’ July semiconductor-market report

What Intel’s latest results do—and do not—explain
Intel reported Q2 2026 revenue of $16.1 billion, up 25% year over year. Its GAAP result was a loss of $2.16 per share, while non-GAAP EPS was $0.42. The distinction matters: these are different measures, and the positive non-GAAP figure does not erase the GAAP loss. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan called the results the company’s strongest revenue growth in more than fifteen years. Intel’s Q2 2026 results Tan’s statement in the earnings release
For Q3, Intel forecast revenue of $15.8 billion to $16.8 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $0.38. These company figures provide business context, but they do not identify a catalyst for Intel’s October 7 share movement or demonstrate how it performed against chip peers that day.

Next earnings report
Intel scheduled its Q3 2026 results for October 29, 2026, after the market close, with a conference call at 2 p.m. PDT. That was the next announced earnings event at the time; its proximity may matter to investors, but it is not evidence that earnings expectations caused the October 7 move. What investors can reasonably conclude
- The October 7 reporting cited here does not verify the premise that Intel defied a chip-sector slump.
- A low-confidence secondary snapshot reported that Intel fell 3.2%; the AP’s early-market figures describe broad U.S. indexes, not semiconductor stocks.
- Intel’s latest cited results combined strong year-over-year revenue growth with a GAAP loss per share and positive non-GAAP EPS.
- The Q3 earnings date and proposed stock offering are relevant context, not sourced explanations for that day’s share move.
