Bitcoin is highly speculative and volatile; network fees vary; selling can trigger U.S. federal tax; and how you hold exposure determines who controls the keys and what risks you take. A spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) changes the way you get exposure, not Bitcoin’s price risk.
Why is Bitcoin so volatile?
Bitcoin’s price can move sharply, making it a highly speculative investment. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy describes bitcoin as highly speculative and cautions that price volatility remains relevant when investing through an ETP. Its bulletin does not establish a comparable volatility statistic or predict future performance. SEC Investor.gov ETP bulletin, September 9, 2024.
Buying an ETP share rather than bitcoin directly does not remove the underlying price exposure. Consider whether you can tolerate a substantial loss before choosing either route.
How much are Bitcoin transaction fees?
There is no single fixed Bitcoin network fee. Fees vary with demand for space in the blockchain, and generally relate to a transaction’s size in bytes—not simply the amount of bitcoin being sent. A more complex transaction can use more space. Wallets may estimate the fee and allow you to review it before confirming. Bitcoin.org FAQ.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Do not confuse a network transaction fee with charges from an exchange or custodian. A provider may separately charge for trading, spreads, deposits, withdrawals, custody, transfers, account setup, or closure. Check its current fee schedule and the wallet’s estimate before acting; a live network fee amount is not established here.
Do I pay taxes when I sell Bitcoin?
For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets such as bitcoin as property, so general property tax principles apply. When you sell bitcoin for U.S. dollars, you generally recognize a capital gain or loss, subject to limits on deducting capital losses. The result depends on your adjusted basis and amount realized. The IRS describes amount realized as cash plus the fair market value of services received, reduced by transaction costs allocable to the disposition; such costs can include fees, transfer taxes, and commissions paid for services that effect a purchase, sale, or disposition. Is moving Bitcoin between my own wallets taxable?
Under current IRS FAQs, moving digital assets between wallets or accounts that both belong to the same taxpayer is generally not a taxable event. However, bitcoin used or withheld to pay a transfer service can affect the tax treatment. Keep records of the transfer and any fee, and consult current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional about your circumstances.

Should I keep Bitcoin on an exchange or use a hardware wallet?
A wallet does not hold bitcoin itself; it holds the private keys or passcodes that authorize transactions. The choice between self-custody and a third-party provider is a trade-off between control, responsibility, convenience, and reliance on another party—not a way to eliminate risk.
Self-custody and hardware wallets
With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting them and maintaining access. A hot wallet is connected to the internet and convenient, but exposed to cyberthreats. A cold wallet is typically a physical device kept offline and is generally less exposed to cyberthreats; it can still be lost, damaged, or stolen. A recovery seed phrase may restore access, so store it securely: someone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet.

Exchange or other third-party custody
With third-party custody, the provider controls the keys. You depend on its security, operations, and ability to meet its obligations. Before entrusting assets to a provider, review its custody safeguards, what happens if it fails, insurance terms, whether it may use or rehypothecate assets, its privacy practices, and applicable fees. The SEC identifies asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup, and closure fees as charges to check. SEC Investor.gov custody bulletin, December 12, 2025.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a Bitcoin ETF the same as owning Bitcoin?
No. A spot bitcoin ETP can provide exchange-traded price exposure without some of the wallet setup and personal key-handling tasks involved in owning bitcoin directly. But an ETP share is a product with its own structure, custodian, fees, and risks; it does not let you transact on the Bitcoin network as direct bitcoin ownership does. The SEC also notes that sponsor fees reduce the amount of bitcoin represented by an investor’s shares over time. Review the current prospectus for the product’s structure, sponsor fee, and custody arrangements, and account for brokerage costs. The share price remains exposed to Bitcoin’s price movements. | Consideration | Direct bitcoin | Spot bitcoin ETP |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | Bitcoin, accessed through keys in a wallet or through a custodian | Shares in an exchange-traded product, not bitcoin you can send on the network |
| Key management | Self-custody requires you to protect keys and recovery information; a custodian instead controls the keys | Does not require you to manage a personal bitcoin wallet for the shares |
| Costs to check | Network fees and any exchange or custody charges | Sponsor fee and brokerage costs |
| Risks to consider | Bitcoin price risk, plus key loss or theft with self-custody, or provider risks with custody | Bitcoin price risk plus product and custody risks |
