To store XRP in self-custody, use a trusted wallet to generate and manage your XRP Ledger account keys, then protect the secret that authorizes transactions. A hardware wallet can keep that key off an internet-connected device; a software wallet is more convenient but stores keys digitally on your device. In either case, you—not a wallet company or the XRP Ledger—are responsible for securing and recovering the secret.
What self-custody means for XRP
A wallet manages keys and signs transactions; XRP and account records reside on the XRP Ledger. The seed or private key is the authority to control an account. Someone who obtains it can create signatures to authorize transactions, just as the account owner can. The XRP Ledger documentation on cryptographic keys explains this control relationship.
There is no ledger administrator who can reset a lost key. If you lose the secret and have no usable recovery copy or other valid signing arrangement, you can be locked out of the account with no recovery option. The XRP Ledger wallet documentation warns that lost keys have no recovery options.
Choose a storage approach that fits how you use XRP
Compare the options by how often you transact, where keys are exposed, how you will protect recovery material, and whether your planned transaction types are supported. The XRP Ledger documentation describes the following approaches; it does not establish one as best for every balance or user.

How to protect your XRP secret
- Generate keys in a trusted environment. Obtain wallet software and device-management software from the official provider. Compromised applications can expose secrets.
- Keep the master secret offline where practical. Do not email it, enter it into a website, send it to support, or leave it as plain text on an internet-connected computer. Never disclose it to a person or online signing service.
- Protect recovery material. If stored digitally, encrypt it rather than keeping it in plain text. If stored physically, protect it from theft, damage, and unauthorized viewing. A disconnected hardware wallet does not protect an exposed recovery copy.
- Verify what you authorize. Review transaction details on the signing device or trusted wallet interface before approving. A hardware wallet reduces direct key exposure but does not make a transaction safe merely because it is signed on the device.
The XRP Ledger’s secure-signing guidance describes offline storage options, including an air-gapped machine or a securely stored physical copy, and warns that anyone who gains access to a secret key may steal the account’s XRP and other assets.

How to use an air-gapped signing setup
In an offline-signing arrangement, the offline machine signs a transaction and the signed result is carried to an online machine for submission. This reduces the offline key’s network exposure, but it does not remove operational risks.
- Keep the offline machine physically secure and restrict who can access it.
- Use software from trusted sources; compromised software brought onto the offline machine can undermine the setup.
- Do not reuse for the air-gapped machine a USB drive that has been connected to a networked computer. XRPL warns that physical access and compromised transferred software can compromise offline signing.
For many users, the handling demands of air-gapped signing may outweigh its added isolation. Choose it only if you can maintain the offline device and transfer process reliably.

Check hardware-wallet compatibility before relying on a device
Before buying or using a hardware wallet, verify current XRP Ledger support for the exact model and confirm that it supports the transaction types you need. XRPL secure-signing documentation names Ledger Nano S as an example of a dedicated signing device, but that example does not establish current availability or compatibility of any particular current model. Check the device maker’s current support information as well as the wallet software you plan to use.
Consider regular keys or multisigning only if you need them
Regular key
An XRPL account can use a regular key for routine transactions while keeping the master key offline. If the regular key is compromised, the master key can be used to replace it. This is an advanced account configuration, not a substitute for protecting the master secret; set it up only after understanding the account-level changes and recovery implications. Multisigning
Multisigning can require authorization from keys held on multiple devices or by multiple people. It can reduce reliance on a single signing key, but adds configuration complexity, transaction costs, and a reserve requirement. The XRP Ledger account documentation retrieved in 2026 states a 1 XRP reserve for a funded account. This is an on-ledger requirement, not a wallet-security recommendation, and the figure can change. Check the current XRPL account reserve documentation before funding an account or changing its configuration.
