To evaluate Nvidia stock, compare its market value with clearly defined earnings, then test whether the growth, profitability and risks behind those earnings can support the expectations reflected in the share price. Market capitalization and P/E ratios are useful inputs—not proof that a stock is fairly valued or a buy or sell.

Start with market capitalization—and its date

Market capitalization is the share price multiplied by shares outstanding. It estimates the market value of a company’s common equity at a particular time; it is not the value of the entire operating business, and it changes with the share price and share count.

StockAnalysis reported Nvidia market capitalization of approximately $5.78 trillion at the October 6, 2026 close. Treat that as a dated snapshot, not a lasting company statistic. When checking or quoting market capitalization, identify the date and the source’s share-count basis. StockAnalysis’s Nvidia market-cap page provides its figure.

For comparisons between companies with different debt and cash positions, investors also use enterprise value, which adjusts market capitalization for debt and cash and may include other claims depending on the convention. If you use it, state the calculation and date. It answers a different question from market capitalization, so do not treat the two as interchangeable.

Read earnings across both a quarter and a full year

The latest results identified here are Nvidia’s fiscal 2027 second quarter, ended July 26, 2026. Nvidia reported $96.2 billion in revenue, up 106% year over year, and diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.46 under GAAP and $2.22 on a non-GAAP basis. Those figures describe one quarter; they should not be mistaken for a full-year earnings run rate or a guarantee that growth will continue. The company’s results release gives the headline figures, while its Form 10-Q for the quarter includes fuller financial statements, discussion and risk disclosures.

For annual context, Nvidia’s fiscal year ended January 25, 2026, with $215.9 billion in revenue, a 71.1% gross margin, $130.4 billion in operating income and diluted EPS of $4.90. The FY2026 Form 10-K provides the annual filing and risk discussion. Use it alongside the newer quarterly filing: the full-year figures add context, but do not replace current results.

Before using any earnings figure in a valuation, establish what it represents:

  • Period: quarterly, trailing 12 months or a stated fiscal year.
  • Accounting basis: GAAP or adjusted/non-GAAP. Nvidia’s two Q2 diluted EPS figures are not interchangeable.
  • Per-share basis: diluted EPS accounts for potential dilution; be consistent when comparing figures.
  • Unusual items: review the statements and notes for items that may affect how representative earnings are.

Use P/E ratios carefully

The price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) compares a share price with earnings per share. A trailing P/E uses past earnings; a forward P/E uses forecast earnings. The distinction matters because one reflects reported results and the other depends on estimates.

For October 2026, StockAnalysis displayed Nvidia’s trailing P/E at 30.25 and forward P/E at 19.78. These are provider-calculated, time-sensitive ratios, not company-reported results. The forward figure relies on expected earnings and the provider’s methodology; it is not a promise that those earnings will occur. See StockAnalysis’s Nvidia financial ratios for its figures.

A lower forward P/E than trailing P/E can reflect expected earnings growth, but also forecast uncertainty. It does not, by itself, establish that Nvidia shares are cheap. Before comparing P/E figures, check that they use consistent dates, earnings definitions and periods. In particular, do not compare a trailing multiple based on one accounting basis with a forward multiple based on another without explaining the difference.

Ask whether the business can support the expectations in the price

A multiple is most useful when considered alongside the business that produces the earnings. Evaluate these dimensions using comparable periods and definitions:

  • Growth and durability: assess recent revenue and earnings growth, then consider whether it can persist. One strong quarter is evidence of recent performance, not proof of future results.
  • Profitability: look at gross margin and operating income, and whether the business can sustain them as it grows.
  • Valuation: compare trailing and forward multiples on consistent earnings bases, while recognizing that estimates may change.
  • Resilience and risk: review cash flow, the balance sheet and the company’s risk disclosures. Nvidia’s filings discuss risks including demand concentration, competition, supply and product transitions, and customer investment cycles.

Peer or historical comparisons can add perspective only when the periods, accounting definitions and business mix are reasonably comparable. A ratio without that context can mislead, and an apparent discount or premium alone does not establish fair value.

Separate management’s view from evidence of future performance

When Nvidia reported Q2 fiscal 2027 results, CEO Jensen Huang said, “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue,” as reported by the Associated Press. This is management’s characterization of demand, not independent verification of future growth. Investors should test such claims against subsequent reported results and the risks described in company filings.

Build a valuation view without claiming false precision

Market capitalization, reported earnings and valuation multiples supply inputs for analysis; they do not produce a certain fair value on their own. A defensible view needs explicit assumptions about future earnings and risk, as well as the date and method behind the figures. Without those assumptions, neither exceptional growth nor a low-looking forward P/E is enough to conclude that the shares are under- or overvalued.
