Read a cement company’s quarterly results as a connected operating story, not as a verdict based on one headline number. Start with cement sales volume and revenue, then examine realizations, costs, EBITDA and EBITDA per tonne, cement and clinker utilization, and unusual items. Compare the same reporting basis and period, and test management’s explanations against later results before deciding whether a change looks durable.

First, confirm what the results cover

Before comparing numbers, identify the fiscal quarter and any year-to-date period, whether the figures are standalone or consolidated, the reporting currency, and the company’s consolidation perimeter. An acquisition, merger, or newly included business can change reported growth even if underlying operations have not changed by the same amount. Compare like periods on like bases.

Company results pages often publish earnings releases alongside financial reports and investor presentations. Cementir Holding’s official results page, for example, lists quarterly and interim reports as well as investor presentations: Cementir Holding results center.

Start with sales volume, then connect it to revenue

What volume tells you

Find cement sales volume and compare it with the same quarter a year earlier. Note whether the company also reports clinker, ready-mix concrete, aggregates, or other products. Higher shipments establish that more volume was sold in the stated period; they do not, on their own, establish higher prices, stronger margins, or stronger demand in every market. Acquisitions, new capacity, and changes in product or geographic mix can also affect the comparison.

Why revenue and volume may move differently

Compare revenue growth with volume growth. If revenue rises faster or slower than volume, investigate realization (revenue per unit sold), geography, product mix, non-cement activity, and the reporting perimeter. Do not call a calculated revenue-per-tonne figure a reported realization unless the company provides it; if you calculate an implied figure, label it clearly and explain what revenue and volume it includes.

Ambuja Cements’ FY26 investor material presents cement sales volume and revenue alongside EBITDA and profitability measures, illustrating why these figures are more informative as a set than in isolation: Ambuja Cements financial results.

Read EBITDA through its definition and unit economics

Check the label and calculation

Companies may report EBITDA, operating EBITDA, adjusted EBITDA, EBITDA margin, or EBITDA per tonne. The labels do not guarantee identical calculations between issuers. Read the company’s definition and any reconciliation, and do not compare one company’s adjusted measure with another’s unadjusted figure as if they were interchangeable. Cementos Pacasmayo’s SEC-filed disclosure warns that its EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA may not be comparable with similarly titled measures at other companies: Cementos Pacasmayo SEC filing.

Use EBITDA per tonne as a clue, not a complete explanation

Where reported, EBITDA per tonne can help connect profitability with sales volume. If total EBITDA declines while EBITDA per tonne increases, lower volume may be one contributor; if EBITDA per tonne falls, examine possible changes in fuel, power, freight, packaging, raw materials, realization, or mix. These are lines of inquiry, not causes to assume: attribute a movement to a particular factor only when the company reports evidence for it.

For scale, Ambuja Cements reported consolidated cement sales volume of 53.8 million tonnes, revenue from operations of ₹29,740 crore, operating EBITDA of ₹5,075 crore, an operating EBITDA margin of 17.1%, and operating EBITDA of ₹943 per tonne for the nine months ended 31 December 2025. These are company-reported figures for that period, not an industry benchmark: Ambuja Cements financial results.

Keep cement and clinker utilization separate

Cement sales, cement production, and clinker production can follow different schedules. Check how the company calculates utilization and whether it annualizes a quarter’s output. In one issuer-specific definition, Cementos Pacasmayo defines utilization as production for the stated period divided by installed capacity for that period; verify a company’s own method before applying the same interpretation elsewhere: Cementos Pacasmayo SEC filing.

Pacasmayo’s 2Q26 disclosure describes lower clinker utilization associated with annual kiln production planning and use of existing clinker inventory, while cement utilization was driven by demand. The example shows why a single quarterly utilization rate is not, by itself, a complete measure of demand, efficiency, or asset health: Cementos Pacasmayo financial information.

  • Check maintenance and kiln schedules that may shift production between quarters.
  • Look for inventory drawdown or accumulation that can separate production from shipments.
  • Read cement shipments and clinker output together rather than treating either utilization figure as a standalone verdict.

Look for unusual items that distort growth comparisons

Read the notes and management bridges for one-time gains, incentives, impairments, acquisitions, disposals, tax effects, or consolidation changes. A reported growth rate can be misleading if the comparison period contains an unusual item. Ambuja Cements’ nine-month FY26 material flags one-time income and a GST incentive in prior-period quarterly comparisons and points to a normalized-to-reported PAT bridge: Ambuja Cements financial results.

When a company provides enough detail, compare reported figures on a consistent basis or calculate an adjustment and identify it plainly as your own analysis. Do not compare a normalized figure for one period with an unadjusted figure for another.

Treat explanations as hypotheses to test over time

Weather, construction demand, fuel and power prices, freight, packaging availability, currency, maintenance, and competition can affect results. Their importance varies by company and period, so use management’s stated reasons rather than assuming a familiar industry factor explains a particular quarter.

In its FY26 release, Ambuja Cements cited fuel, diesel, packaging, rupee depreciation, weather, geopolitical events, and inventory management among the influences on its results, and discussed mitigation through fuel mix, renewable power, logistics, and production and inventory management: Ambuja Cements financial results. Check subsequent releases to see whether a cited pressure persists, reverses, or is offset; one quarter’s explanation is not proof of a lasting trend.

Separate planned capacity from operating output

Installed capacity, trial production, commercial commissioning, utilization, and saleable output are different milestones. A capacity announcement or trial run provides context, but does not establish that the plant is commercially operating or contributing a particular volume.

Dalmia Bharat’s Q2 FY26 release said a new clinker line began trial production in September 2025 and was expected to begin commercial production in Q3 FY26. That statement records the plan at the time; confirm later reports for commissioning, realized production, costs, and sales contribution: Dalmia Bharat financial results.

How to compare two cement companies

Use the same periods and definitions wherever possible. A ranking based on one metric can conceal differences in business mix, geography, accounting, or operating structure. In particular, EBITDA per tonne may reflect product mix, geography, and whether operations are integrated or focused on grinding; the cited disclosures establish the need to check definitions but do not provide a universal adjustment formula.

Comparison area What to check
Volume and mix Cement volume growth, product mix, geographic mix, and whether acquisitions or new capacity affect the comparison.
Revenue and realization Revenue trend relative to volume; investigate mix, geography, non-cement activity, and any reported realization measure.
Profitability EBITDA definition, margin, and per-tonne performance; distinguish adjusted from unadjusted measures.
Costs Fuel, power, freight, packaging, and other cost exposure, using company explanations where available.
Operations Cement and clinker utilization, maintenance, kiln schedules, and inventory effects.
Capacity and funding Capacity additions and their commissioning status, capital needs, leverage, interest costs, and cash generation where disclosed.
Reporting basis Fiscal period, standalone or consolidated basis, consolidation perimeter, and reporting currency.

A practical quarter-by-quarter checklist

  1. Record the fiscal period, reporting basis, currency, and any change in the group perimeter.
  2. Compare cement sales volume with the same period a year earlier and note the product and geographic mix.
  3. Compare revenue growth with volume growth; investigate any divergence without presenting an unsupported implied price as a company-reported metric.
  4. Read EBITDA and related measures using the issuer’s definitions, reconciliation, and any per-tonne figure.
  5. Review cement and clinker production and utilization alongside maintenance plans and inventory movements.
  6. Identify unusual items and keep reported and normalized comparisons separate.
  7. Record management’s stated drivers, then check later periods for persistence or reversal.
  8. Verify whether capacity is installed, in trial production, commercially commissioned, or contributing saleable output.
