A holiday sale is a real deal only if the exact item you want is competitively priced, the final cost works for you, and the seller’s terms are acceptable. A “50% off” badge alone cannot establish that. Compare the model, check other sellers and price history, add fees, and review return rules before you buy.
Start with the exact product you want
Write down the manufacturer and model number, along with must-have details such as size, color, configuration, and condition. Similar-looking products can differ in features or quality, so comparing prices is useful only when the offers are for the same item. The Federal Trade Commission’s online-shopping guidance recommends noting details such as the manufacturer or model number before comparing offers.
Also decide which features matter to you. A bundle, upgraded version, or replacement model may not be a better deal if it includes extras you do not need or lacks something you consider essential.
Check the price beyond the sale badge
Compare current offers across sellers
Look at a few reputable sellers for the exact product. A comparison-shopping site can help you find offers or price alerts, but it is not automatically an impartial referee: some sites promote their own products or rank sellers when payment is involved. Consider how a site earns money and verify important offers directly with the retailer. The FTC discusses both price alerts and these limitations in its shopping guidance.

Use price history when available
If you can find a price history for the exact model, use it to judge whether today’s price is unusual compared with the item’s own recent prices. A price tracker is a source of information, not proof that an offer is good; check that it matches the product and seller you are considering.
Treat the reference price as a claim
A crossed-out price, “regular” price, or percentage-off figure does not tell you what other stores charge or what the product has recently cost. The FTC says truthfulness standards apply to sale-price and price-comparison claims. It also cautions that a suggested retail price can be higher than the price stores typically charge, so a markdown from that figure may exaggerate the apparent saving. See the FTC’s advertising guidance and its explanation of suggested retail prices in liquidation sales.

There is reason to look past the badge. In a 2025 Consumers’ Checkbook study, researchers tracked selected products at 25 national chains weekly for 24 weeks beginning in February. They reported that 21 chains advertised sale prices more than half the time; the other 19 retailers labeled tracked items “on sale” about 76% of the tracking period on average. These findings describe that study’s selected chains and items, not all retailers. Kevin Brasler, executive editor of Consumers’ Checkbook, said in its November 13, 2025 press release: “Seeing 50 percent or 60 percent off a regular price doesn’t mean anything. The only way to make sure you’re getting the best deal is to shop around.” Consumers’ Checkbook’s release explains the study.
Compare the final cost, not just the item price
Add unavoidable costs before deciding which offer is cheaper. Depending on the purchase, that means shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other mandatory fees. Read the full product description and any conditions attached to coupons, bundles, rebates, or limited-time offers; a discount that applies only after buying an unwanted add-on may not save you money overall. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking the total cost and the terms of the deal.

Review return terms and seller reliability
Before paying, check how long you have to return the item, who pays return shipping, whether there is a restocking fee, and whether sale or clearance items have different rules. Check refund terms as well. Policies can change, so rely on the seller’s current terms at the time you buy rather than a general expectation about holiday returns.
For an unfamiliar seller, search the seller’s name alongside terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” Be especially cautious when a normally expensive product has an unusually low price: the FTC warns that such offers can lead to scam sites, counterfeit-looking goods, or goods that never arrive. Its holiday-shopping scam guidance also recommends checking extra charges and return costs. Do not pay an online seller that insists on gift cards, a wire transfer, a payment app, or cryptocurrency.

Rules and consumer protections vary by location. The steps above draw primarily on U.S. FTC guidance; the European Commission’s March 2026 summary of an EU consumer-protection sweep reported that 34% of traders displayed price comparisons and that 60% of those did not clearly explain the reference price. That finding is specific to the EU sweep, not a worldwide estimate. European Commission summary.

- Define the target: Record the exact product and model, plus the features, size, and condition you need.
- Find comparable offers: Check a few reputable sellers for that same item. If you use a comparison site, consider its ranking incentives and confirm details with the seller.
- Put the price in context: Compare current prices and a price history if available. Do not treat the displayed original price or discount percentage as proof of a bargain.
- Calculate the total: Add shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and mandatory fees; read coupon, bundle, and rebate conditions.
- Check the exit terms: Review return deadlines, return shipping, restocking fees, refund rules, and any special policy for sale items.
- Verify the seller and save records: Investigate unfamiliar sellers and suspiciously low offers. Keep the listing, price, date, seller terms, and receipt in case the order or advertised terms are disputed.
A simple notebook can be used to record product models, dates, and prices if you prefer tracking them manually; it is optional and does not automate price monitoring.
