Choose the card that gives you the most usable value at the online merchants where you actually shop—not the one with the biggest advertised rate. Compare eligible purchase rewards, activated sale offers, annual fees, redemption options and card benefits, then account for interest: carrying a balance can cost more than the rewards are worth.
Start with the online purchases you expect to make
List the merchants and types of purchases you expect during sale periods. For each card, check the issuer’s current product page and full terms to see which transactions qualify, whether online purchases or particular merchant categories count, whether rewards are capped, and how you can redeem them. Do not assume that an advertised online rate applies to every website, marketplace or payment wallet.
For example, the Amazon Visa product page sets out specific earning categories and separate terms. Treat that page as an example of how to check a card’s conditions, not as evidence that the card is best for every online shopper.
Compare the value you can actually use
Estimate value from purchases that qualify and rewards you expect to redeem. A simple comparison is:

Estimated net value = eligible spending × effective reward value + confirmed offer value − attributable annual fee.
Points do not have one universal cash value. Check the issuer’s available redemption options and terms before assigning a value. Also compare reward caps and exclusions, the eligible merchants and offer period, and any spending threshold. A high rate on a category you rarely use may be worth less to you than a lower rate on the purchases you make regularly.

Check card-linked offers separately from ongoing rewards
Some issuers provide offers in addition to a card’s regular rewards. These may be targeted, require activation before purchase, and apply only when you pay with the card linked to the offer. Chase describes eligible cash-back offers that cardholders can find on its site or in its app, activate on a card, and use for a statement credit after shopping with that same card. Availability is not the same for every cardholder.
Before relying on an offer, read its terms in your account. Verify the merchant and eligible products, activation requirement, deadline, spending threshold, exclusions, and when any credit is expected to post. Include only offers you can confirm and realistically use in your value estimate.

Distinguish purchase protection from price protection
These benefits address different situations. Price protection may refund the difference when an eligible item’s price falls after purchase. Purchase protection may cover an eligible item if it is damaged or stolen, subject to limits and exclusions.
Chase’s explainers say the issuer does not currently offer price protection. Its purchase-protection article describes coverage for eligible theft, damage or accidental parting and reports a 120-day claim period, or 90 days for New York residents. Those details apply to the coverage described in that article; they should not be assumed for another issuer or card. Read the exact card’s Guide to Benefits for its terms.
Visa’s U.S. Signature overview lists potential price protection and purchase security, but directs cardholders to their issuer for the complete Guide to Benefits. Network branding alone does not establish that a particular card includes either benefit or define its coverage. Confirm the exact card, payment requirement, eligible purchases, claim deadline, coverage maximum and exclusions in the issuer’s guide before counting on a benefit.
Account for interest before chasing rewards
The CFPB says card companies are not required to offer a grace period, although most cards provide one on purchases. If your card has a grace period and you are not carrying a balance, paying the full balance by the due date can help you avoid interest on new purchases. If you carry a balance, new purchases may accrue interest.

Compare borrowing costs before rewards if you might carry a balance. Do not spend extra or take on debt to earn points or a cash-back offer: interest can overwhelm the value you gain. Check the current purchase APR and the card agreement for your account rather than assuming one rate applies to all cards or cardholders.

Rewards and offers can change. The CFPB explains that issuers may change rewards benefits without the 45-day advance notice generally required for significant account changes. Treat published rewards as current terms, not a promise that they will remain unchanged for the life of the account. Recheck the issuer’s product page, pricing and terms, and Guide to Benefits when choosing a card and before relying on a specific offer or protection.
Price-comparison tools and price-drop alerts can help you evaluate a sale, while virtual card numbers, purchase alerts and card-lock controls may add convenience or security. Capital One’s July 14, 2026 article describes these kinds of features and its Capital One Shopping service, which offers price comparisons and price-drop alerts at online retailers. These are separate from card rewards; availability, eligibility and service terms may vary.
