Before paying, verify the exact phone and its carrier fit, the seller, the full delivered price, and the return and warranty terms. For a used phone, check both its device status and its physical and working condition. A discount is a good deal only if the phone suits your needs and you can resolve problems without unexpected costs.
Use this checklist before you place the order
- Identify the exact phone. Match the make, model, storage capacity, condition, and regional or carrier variant to what you intend to buy. Save a copy of the listing, including its description and photos.
- Confirm carrier compatibility. “Unlocked” does not mean a phone will work well on every network. Providers use different network technologies and spectrum, and a device may not work as intended on a network it was not designed for. Check the exact model with your carrier before buying. CTIA’s device guidance also recommends checking compatibility.
- Check who is selling it. On a marketplace, distinguish the platform from the individual seller. Look at recent reviews from more than one source, check the seller’s contact details, and make sure the description and photos clearly show what is being offered. Confirm who handles a problem and whether the platform’s buyer protection covers this specific seller and item. Ask questions in writing and keep the replies.
- Work out the delivered price. Add the item price, shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees. Read the conditions attached to the discount, including any eligibility or purchase requirements, and check whether sale or clearance merchandise has different return terms. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking costs and terms before ordering.
- Read delivery and return terms before checkout. Find the promised delivery date, return deadline, who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies, and how refunds are issued. In the United States, FTC guidance says a seller must ship within the time it promises; if it gives no shipping time, the FTC describes a 30-day default rule. That is U.S. guidance, not a universal rule. Save the listing and the seller’s delivery and return promises.
- Choose a payment method with recourse. The FTC recommends safer options such as credit cards or secure payment systems with buyer protection. Do not move payment outside the marketplace, or pay by gift card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer because a seller pressures you to do so. Check what protection actually applies to your payment and purchase in the relevant country. FTC marketplace guidance advises checking the seller’s rules, problem-resolution process, and payment options before buying.
- Check the warranty and software support. Read the written warranty, identify who handles repairs, and save the warranty with the receipt. Ask the manufacturer for the security-update commitment and end date for the exact model; support varies by model. The FTC has recommended that manufacturers disclose update-support duration and when support ends, but a specific phone’s current end date is not established by that general recommendation. - If it is used or refurbished, check status and condition. Ask for the IMEI or another device identifier and check it with the wireless provider or CTIA’s Stolen Phone Checker program. Inspect the phone for cracks, dents, moisture damage, charging problems, unresponsive controls, and other faults. Confirm the refund policy, warranty, and carrier compatibility. A clean status lookup does not prove the phone is in good condition or guarantee it will work on your carrier. CTIA says secondhand buyers should verify device status, condition, purchasing and refund policies, and compatibility.
Compare offers on the terms that affect your cost and risk
When two listings look similar, compare them side by side rather than judging by the headline discount. Include the exact model and carrier fit, condition, delivered price, warranty and update support, return terms, seller protection, and—if the phone is pre-owned—device status and condition.

Read used-phone condition labels carefully
Terms such as “excellent,” “good,” and “refurbished” are not enough by themselves to tell you what you will receive. Ask for the seller’s grading definitions, what functions were tested, and whether the phone has a stated battery-health level or genuine-parts declaration. CTIA announced Version 5.1 of its Wireless Device Grading Scales Criteria and Definitions on June 10, 2026, describing guidance for translating wholesale grades into consumer-facing terms, including cosmetic criteria, functional testing, battery health, and genuine-parts declarations. That announcement does not establish that every seller follows the standard; check the seller’s own published criteria. CTIA’s announcement explains the standard.
Keep a record of the transaction
Save the listing, item description, price and fees, seller messages, order confirmation, receipt, warranty, and return instructions. These records help you check what was promised if the delivered phone differs from the listing or you need to ask for a repair, refund, or marketplace review.

The cited consumer-protection guidance is from U.S. federal sources, and the cited wireless-industry guidance is from CTIA. Consumer laws, payment protections, carrier networks, and device-status databases can differ by country, so check local rules and your own provider’s requirements.
