Sherwin-Williams is a large paint and coatings company with meaningful cash generation, but its fiscal 2025 results were mixed: sales and adjusted earnings rose while GAAP diluted earnings per share declined. Its year-end debt and exposure to cyclical demand also matter. Whether SHW is worth buying depends not just on the business, but on the price you pay—and the available figures do not establish a current share price or valuation multiple.
What Sherwin-Williams does
The Sherwin-Williams Company develops, manufactures, distributes, and sells paints, coatings, and related products to professional, industrial, commercial, and retail customers. Its three reported operating segments are Paint Stores Group, Consumer Brands Group, and Performance Coatings Group. The company sells branded products through company-operated stores and other retail and distribution channels; its performance coatings serve industrial and commercial markets. Its common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker SHW.
What its fiscal 2025 results show
The figures below come from Sherwin-Williams’ fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 19, 2026. They describe the year ended in 2025, not the company’s latest 2026 quarter.
| Measure | Fiscal 2025 result | What to notice |
|---|---|---|
| Consolidated net sales | $23.574 billion, up 2.1% from fiscal 2024 | Sales increased, but the company described demand as choppy. |
| Diluted net income per share | $10.26, down 2.7% from fiscal 2024 | GAAP diluted EPS declined despite higher sales. |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $11.43, up 0.9% from fiscal 2024 | This adjusted measure rose modestly; it is not interchangeable with GAAP EPS. |
| Operating cash flow | $3.452 billion, equal to 14.6% of net sales | Cash generation is a separate indicator from reported earnings. |
Management reported record net sales and expanded gross profit and gross margin while describing demand as choppy. Those statements offer context, but the annual figures alone do not show which segments or end markets drove the changes. Reviewing segment results and several years of margins can help distinguish durable growth from a one-year change.

Cash generation, dividends, and debt
Sherwin-Williams says it has used cash from operations for capital expenditures, acquisitions, dividends, and share repurchases. Its investor-relations page reports $14.3 billion of net operating cash over the five years through December 31, 2025. The same page reports a 6.9% five-year adjusted EPS compound annual growth rate, 5.6% average annual same-store sales growth over five years, 47 consecutive years of dividend increases, and a 15.18% ten-year average annual shareholder return; these are historical company-reported figures as of December 31, 2025, not forecasts or a guarantee of future returns.
Debt is an important counterweight to that cash generation. At December 31, 2025, the Form 10-K reported net debt of $10.664 billion, equal to 2.4 times 2025 EBITDA. The company also expected interest expense in 2026 to increase by approximately $85 million. These are year-end 2025 and management outlook figures, respectively, not a live balance-sheet update. Investors should assess debt alongside operating cash flow, upcoming financing needs, and the cash committed to acquisitions, dividends, and repurchases.

Business risks to examine
The company identifies dependence on demand and cyclical end markets among its risks. That makes housing activity, repair and remodeling, industrial demand, and customer spending sensible areas to investigate; the cited company materials do not quantify how sensitive Sherwin-Williams is to each of those factors.
- Demand and cyclicality: Check whether sales and margins hold up when customers defer projects or end markets weaken, and compare performance across different economic conditions.
- Segment mix: Determine which of the three segments are contributing growth and earnings, and whether that mix is changing.
- Acquisitions and financing: The company lists acquisitions as a use of cash, and its 2026 interest-cost outlook includes acquisition-related financing. Consider integration, returns on invested capital, and the effect of financing costs.
- Capital allocation: Track how much cash goes to investment in the business, acquisitions, dividends, and share repurchases, and whether those uses support per-share value over time.
A practical SHW investment checklist
- Review the trend, not just one year. Compare sales, gross margin, segment results, EPS, and operating cash flow over several years. Identify whether changes came from demand, pricing, costs, acquisitions, or other factors.
- Test earnings quality. Compare GAAP and adjusted EPS, and examine whether cash generation broadly supports reported earnings. Do not treat adjusted and GAAP figures as equivalent.
- Assess leverage and financing. Compare net debt with earnings and cash flow, then consider how refinancing and acquisition financing could affect debt service.
- Evaluate growth sources. Separate growth from existing operations from growth tied to acquisitions, pricing, cost control, or share repurchases.
- Check valuation against normalized results. A strong company can still be a poor investment at an excessive price. Compare the market price with current and normalized earnings or cash flow, using assumptions you can justify. The figures summarized here do not provide a current SHW share price or valuation multiple.
- Fit the position to your plan. Consider your time horizon, portfolio diversification, and ability to tolerate business and stock-price risk before deciding how much exposure is appropriate.
If comparing SHW with other investments, use consistent measures: segment and end-market exposure, sales and margin durability, cash conversion, leverage, capital allocation, and valuation against normalized earnings or cash flow. The company figures above do not establish a peer valuation comparison.
