How to Find and Track SEC Filings for a Public Company

Search EDGAR by company name, ticker, or CIK to find filings, then follow company-specific or filtered Latest Filings RSS feeds for updates.

Search SEC EDGAR by a company’s name, ticker symbol, or Central Index Key (CIK), confirm you have the right issuer, and open its filing history. For ongoing updates, subscribe to the company’s EDGAR RSS feed or filter the SEC’s Latest Filings feed. Use Full-Text Search when you need to find words inside filings rather than locate a filing record.

Find the right company in EDGAR

  1. Open the SEC Search Filings page.
  2. Enter the company name, ticker symbol, or CIK in the search box. A CIK is especially useful when companies have similar names or tickers.
  3. Check the result’s company name and, when precision matters, its CIK before using the filing history. A ticker/name lookup can help identify a CIK, but the SEC says its mapping files are periodically updated and does not guarantee their accuracy or scope.

Once you select the issuer, its company search page shows filing records and lets you narrow results by filing form and date. This is the right place to check whether a company filed a particular report and when it appears in EDGAR.

Choose the right EDGAR search

What you want to find Use What it searches
A company’s filing history, filing form, or filing date Company Search Filing-header metadata, such as issuer and form information
A phrase, topic, or keyword within filing documents EDGAR Full-Text Search Text inside filing documents; the SEC says it covers more than 20 years of EDGAR filings

Full-Text Search also offers filters for dates, companies, people, categories, and locations. Use it to locate document content; use Company Search to browse the issuer’s filing record.

Track new filings with RSS

Follow one company

From the company’s EDGAR search results, use the RSS link to subscribe to updates for that issuer. Where available, you can filter the feed by filing type to follow only the forms relevant to you. Feed availability and filtering details are described on the SEC’s RSS Feeds page.

Follow selected filings across companies

For a broader feed, use the RSS option in Latest Filings and filter by company, CIK, or form type. The SEC’s Latest Filings feed can also include, exclude, or show only ownership filings—Forms 3, 4, and 5. This is useful if you monitor several issuers or want a particular class of filing without following every form for each company.

RSS is the SEC’s official alternative for filing updates, but it is not a promise of instant delivery. Choose filters around the filings you actually need to notice; an all-filings feed can be noisy, while a form-specific feed may omit other filings you later decide matter.

Can you get email alerts for SEC filings?

No. The SEC Webmaster FAQ says, “We don’t offer an email notification service for EDGAR filings. However, dynamic RSS is available for some searches.” Do not confuse other SEC email updates with notifications for a company’s EDGAR filings. For official filing updates, use RSS.

How quickly do filings appear?

The SEC says filings are often available on sec.gov within 1–3 minutes of the EDGAR system timestamp. That is an operational estimate, not a guaranteed delivery time: the delay can increase significantly under high server load. The SEC recommends Latest Filings and its RSS feed as the resources for getting as close to real time as possible.

What to verify when a filing matters

  • Issuer identity: Confirm the legal or EDGAR-conformed company name and CIK, rather than relying on a ticker match alone.
  • Filing details: Check the form type and filing date on the issuer’s company search page.
  • Submission identity: An accession number uniquely identifies an accepted submission. Its CIK component can refer to a submitting company or filing agent, so do not treat that component alone as proof of the issuer’s identity.

EDGAR filings and SEC search tools are publicly accessible. The SEC states that government-created and public EDGAR filing content is free to access and reuse, subject to limited exceptions.
