You can leave it with the service where you bought it, or withdraw it to a wallet you control. A wallet does not hold bitcoin like a purse holds cash: it manages the private keys that authorize transactions. With self-custody, protecting those keys and their backup is your responsibility; with a custodial service, you rely on the provider to safeguard access and allow withdrawals.
How to buy bitcoin
There is no single provider, payment method, fee schedule, or set of rules that applies everywhere. Availability depends on your jurisdiction, and the sources cited here do not establish current providers or fees for any particular location. Use this general sequence to evaluate a purchase:
- Find a provider available where you live. Confirm that it supports both your intended purchase method and, if you plan to self-custody, withdrawals to your own wallet.
- Review the terms before funding the account. Check identity-verification requirements, payment and trading fees, withdrawal fees or minimums, withdrawal availability, and account-security controls. Find out how the provider safeguards customer assets, whether assets may be lent or commingled, what its insurance does and does not cover, and what may happen if it suspends service or fails. The SEC staff bulletin on crypto custody recommends investigating these issues, including a custodian’s background, safeguards, fees, privacy practices, and failure procedures.
- Choose custody deliberately. You can keep bitcoin in the provider account or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet. The convenience of leaving it with a provider comes with reliance on that provider; self-custody gives you control of the keys and responsibility for securing them.
- If withdrawing, set up and verify your wallet first. Make and check its backup before sending funds. Compare the destination address and Bitcoin network details shown by your wallet and the provider before confirming a transfer.
- Consider a small test transfer. It can help you check the destination and process before sending more, but it does not guarantee safety. Account for any provider or network fees.
- Keep records. Save purchase and transfer records for your own accounting. Tax and legal obligations vary by jurisdiction; check the rules that apply to you.
What a Bitcoin wallet and recovery phrase do
A Bitcoin wallet creates or manages private keys—the information used to authorize spending. Bitcoin.org’s glossary explains that anyone with the private key may be able to spend the associated bitcoin, which is why it must not be revealed. A recovery phrase is a sequence of words that can restore a wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the associated funds.
Losing a phone or computer does not necessarily mean losing the bitcoin if you have a valid backup and can restore the wallet according to its instructions. Losing the keys and any usable backup can permanently block access. No wallet provider, exchange, developer, or miner can recover funds permanently lost from a self-custodied wallet, as Bitcoin.org’s risk guidance notes.

Wallet backup behavior differs. Confirm whether your wallet’s recovery phrase restores all current and future addresses, and follow that wallet’s recovery instructions. Do not assume a phrase or backup works in a different wallet without checking compatibility.
Custody options compared
| Option | Who controls key access? | Main advantage | Main responsibility or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange or service account | The provider controls private-key access. | Convenience; you do not manage private keys directly. | The provider may be hacked, fail, close, restrict withdrawals, or apply policies that affect access. Review its safeguards, fees, privacy practices, asset use, and the scope of any insurance. |
| Self-custody hot wallet | You control the keys. | Direct control and convenient online transactions. | Your device or account may be compromised through malware, phishing, or other attacks; you must secure keys and backups. |
| Self-custody cold or hardware wallet | You control the keys. | Keys can remain offline during ordinary storage and signing workflows. | The physical device can be lost, damaged, or stolen; recovery still depends on a secure, usable backup. |
| Multisignature arrangement | Multiple keys or approvers are required, depending on the setup. | A single compromised key may not be enough to spend. | Setup and recovery are more complex; understand the specific wallet’s implementation and backup procedure. |
These choices involve trade-offs in control, online exposure, recovery difficulty, convenience, fees, privacy, and what happens if a device or provider fails. Bitcoin.org’s wallet directory also presents selection criteria including control, validation, transparency, environment, privacy, and fees.

Hot wallets, cold wallets, and hardware wallets
“Hot” and “cold” describe a wallet’s connection to the internet, not whether it is automatically safe. The SEC staff bulletin describes hot wallets as internet-connected, including desktop, mobile, and web applications. That connection can make transactions convenient but increases exposure to online threats. Cold wallets are typically physical devices kept offline; they are generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but can be lost, damaged, or stolen.
A hardware wallet is one type of cold-storage option, not a substitute for a backup. If you consider one, check that it supports your needs and obtain it through the maker’s official channel. The recovery phrase remains sensitive: a lost device may be replaceable if you can restore from a valid backup, while a stolen phrase can put the bitcoin at risk. Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance discusses hardware wallets and other security practices; its directory is dynamic, so listed options and features may change.

How to protect keys and backups
- Keep the recovery phrase and private keys secret. Never share them with a supposed support agent, enter them on an untrusted website, or respond to a message asking you to reveal them. The SEC staff bulletin says, “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” It is staff guidance, not a Commission rule, regulation, or statement.
- Use the wallet maker’s official download channel and keep software updated. Verify an app or device before trusting it; the sources cited here do not audit particular vendors.
- Make a recovery plan while the balance is small. Follow the wallet’s backup and recovery instructions, and test that you understand the process without exposing the phrase. Store backups in secure places protected from unauthorized access, theft, fire, and water. Consider more than one secure physical location so one incident does not destroy every copy.
- Limit what you keep on everyday devices. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on a computer or mobile device for everyday uses. Use strong passwords and multifactor authentication on custodial accounts when available.
- Be wary of unsolicited contact. Treat unexpected support messages, investment pitches, and requests for a phrase or key as suspicious. A legitimate helper does not need your recovery phrase to assist you.
- Read a custodian’s insurance terms rather than assuming coverage. Ask what losses are covered, whether customer assets are lent or used as collateral, and whether assets are held separately or commingled.
Risks that remain whichever option you choose
Bitcoin’s price can fluctuate substantially, and scams, provider failure, compromised devices, and mistakes can cause financial loss. Bitcoin.org describes bitcoin as a high-risk asset and cautions against storing money you cannot afford to lose in it. Neither a wallet nor a custody arrangement removes these risks.
An older Investor.gov alert about bitcoin and virtual-currency investments warns that bitcoin holdings in a digital wallet or exchange do not have protections similar to SIPC protection for securities accounts or FDIC insurance for bank accounts. That alert is not a substitute for checking current protections and rules in your jurisdiction.
