Before paying an online travel agency (OTA), verify the exact website and seller, identify who will charge you and control the booking, read the full written terms, and confirm the reservation with the airline, hotel, or other supplier. No single signal—including a padlock, positive reviews, business registration, or credit-card checkout—proves a booking is legitimate.
Check the website and seller independently
- Start from a trusted address. If an offer arrived unexpectedly by email or text, do not use its link. Type the airline, hotel, or agency’s known official address yourself, or find it through another trusted source. Check the domain carefully for misspellings and misleading subdomains. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises travelers to go directly to a company’s website rather than rely on an unexpected message.
- Look for independent evidence about the seller. Search the company name with terms such as “scam,” “review,” or “complaint.” Look for corroborating patterns rather than treating one review or a star rating as conclusive. Check for a real business identity and usable phone and email contacts.
- Compare the exact offer. Check the named airline, hotel, rental property, dates, and total price against comparable options. An unusually cheap premium stay, a deal with no named supplier or property, or pressure to decide immediately warrants extra scrutiny. For a rental, independently search the property address and listed owner or rental company; if it is in a resort, call the front desk using a number found independently.
- Work out who is selling and handling the booking. A site may sell the travel service, act as an intermediary, or simply compare options and refer you elsewhere. Ask which company will issue the ticket or hold the reservation, which company will charge your payment method, and who handles cancellations and changes. Booking through an app or site rather than directly with an airline or resort can affect refunds, travel points, changes, and cancellation costs, according to the FTC’s travel guidance.
A polished website, HTTPS connection, association membership, business registration, or positive review is not proof that the seller or offer is genuine. A padlock indicates an encrypted connection; it does not verify the business behind the page. Treat each clue as one part of a broader check.
Check the seller’s credentials for your location
There is no universal travel-agent license or registry established by the consumer guidance cited here. Requirements and protections depend on where you live and where the seller operates, so check with your local consumer regulator rather than assuming a credential applies everywhere.
- California: The California Department of Justice provides a Seller of Travel search for agencies covered by its program. The department cautions that registration is not an endorsement or proof of reputation; it indicates that the company has followed registration requirements and may have a trust account or bond that could provide added protection.
- Canada: The federal Office of Consumer Affairs advises checking with the relevant provincial or territorial consumer-affairs office, since licensing or registration is required in some jurisdictions. Association membership may add a measure of security, but it is not a guarantee of problem-free service.
- Australia: Consumer Affairs Victoria recommends considering agent accreditation, including the ATAS scheme for general travel-agency services. This is an Australian example, not a worldwide licensing requirement.
If you are buying travel insurance, separately verify that the agency or provider is licensed for the relevant jurisdiction. That insurance check does not establish that the OTA itself is legitimate.

Get the booking and its terms in writing
Before entering payment details, make sure you can identify exactly what you are buying and what happens if plans change. The FTC puts the rule plainly: “Don’t sign or pay until you know the terms of the deal.”
- Confirm the supplier, traveler names, travel dates, itinerary or property address, and included services.
- Check the complete price, including taxes and fees, and whether any charge is recurring or conditional.
- Read the cancellation, change, refund, and no-show rules, including any supplier-specific conditions.
- Save or download the offer and terms shown before checkout. California’s Attorney General recommends getting trip details, total price, and cancellation or change penalties in writing.
- Check that the actual payment page belongs to the business or platform you intend to use. HTTPS is a basic connection-security check, not a legitimacy certificate.
If the seller will not name the supplier, disclose the full price, or provide clear terms—or is rushing you to pay—stop rather than relying on a verbal promise.

Choose a payment route with possible recourse
Walk away if a seller insists that you pay only by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or payment app. The FTC warns that these methods can make lost funds extremely difficult to recover; a payment-app-only demand is a particularly serious warning sign.
If you found the booking through an established platform, keep payment within its checkout flow. A host or agent asking you to pay outside the platform may take you beyond its dispute process. For other bookings, a credit card may offer ways to dispute a charge, but any rights or recovery depend on your issuer, jurisdiction, and circumstances. Check your issuer’s process and deadlines; a dispute or chargeback is not guaranteed to succeed.

Verify the reservation after you book
- Find the airline’s, hotel’s, rental company’s, or other supplier’s contact details independently—not through an unexpected message or a number supplied only by the seller.
- Ask the supplier to confirm that the reservation exists and that the names, dates, itinerary, room or property, and price match your confirmation.
- Keep the confirmation number, tickets, receipts, saved terms, and correspondence with the seller.
- If the supplier cannot find the booking, promptly contact the seller and your payment provider. Use the consumer-protection complaint route relevant to your location. In the United States, consumers can report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov; California consumers can also contact the state’s Seller of Travel Program.
When to stop—and when to investigate further
Stop if the seller uses hard-to-recover payment demands
A demand for wire transfer, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or payment-app-only payment is a strong warning. Do not proceed just because the site looks professional or the offer seems urgent.
Pause if key details or protections are missing
Extreme urgency, a supposedly free trip that requires payment, a premium property priced far below comparable offers, refusal to identify the hotel or property, absent cancellation terms, and pressure to move payment off a platform all warrant stopping until the issue is resolved.

Investigate rather than assume a newer or foreign seller is fraudulent
A recent business, limited reviews, or a seller based abroad is not, by itself, proof of fraud. Check its identity, applicable local requirements, written terms, payment process, and whether the named supplier can confirm the reservation.
