If an online travel agency (OTA) says your booking is pending—or you have an acknowledgement but no clear confirmation—check the booking with the airline, hotel or other provider, and contact the OTA in writing. A payment receipt or booking email alone does not prove that the provider has a live reservation or that an airline ticket has been issued. Save your records while you verify, then ask about the appropriate refund or payment-dispute options if the service cannot be confirmed.
Check what the booking status actually says
Sign in to the OTA account used to make the booking and check the itinerary, status, and any messages. Search your inbox, spam and junk folders for the booking email and later updates. Look for a provider reference, an airline ticket number, or wording such as “pending,” “processing” or “failed.”
Save the itinerary, payment receipt, status screen, booking terms shown at checkout, and any messages from the OTA or provider. A card authorization or OTA acknowledgement is not proof that an airline has issued a ticket. The UK Civil Aviation Authority says there is no set legal period for ticket issuance, so a missing ticket email alone does not establish whether a booking failed. Ask the airline or agent to verify the status instead.
Contact the OTA and the provider
Ask the OTA for a definite status
Contact customer support promptly through the OTA’s official website or app. Give the booking reference, travel dates, and passenger or guest name. Ask for a written reply that answers:

- Is each flight segment, room, or other component confirmed?
- For a flight, has an e-ticket been issued? If so, what is the ticket number?
- What is the airline’s or property’s own reservation reference?
- If the booking is not confirmed, will the OTA complete it or cancel and refund it? What process and expected decision date apply?
Keep the support case number and the response. An OTA may sell the travel product itself or act as an intermediary, and its role can vary by booking site and contract. Japan’s Tourism Agency explains that these different business models affect who the customer contracts with; check the seller and terms on your receipt and booking documents.
Verify directly with the airline, hotel or other operator
Use contact details you find independently on the provider’s official website, rather than relying on an unexpected message or phone number. For flights, contact the airline operating the flight and ask whether it can locate the reservation and whether a ticket has been issued. For accommodation, ask the property to check the guest name and exact dates. For a package or itinerary with several services, verify each component separately.

The UK CAA advises checking with the airline if you are concerned that tickets have not arrived. Consumer Protection BC also recommends contacting airlines, hotels and other operators to confirm reservations in agency-failure situations. These are practical checks, not a guarantee that a provider can resolve a contract or refund issue involving the OTA.
If no reservation can be found, preserve evidence and pursue a remedy
Ask the OTA to state in writing whether it can complete the booking or will refund the payment. Keep copies of the response, booking terms, receipt, provider’s status, and any relevant cancellation or refund conditions. If you paid for a service that is not being supplied, ask your card issuer or payment provider which dispute routes may apply and what deadlines govern your account.

There is no universal refund or chargeback outcome. The available options can depend on your country, the legal seller, the type of booking, the terms, and how you paid. In the United States, the Department of Transportation says its airline refund and reservation requirement does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies, and advises contacting the agent directly first for a refund. That guidance is U.S.-specific; it should not be treated as a rule for other countries.
Escalate through the right local channel
Identify the seller or contracting party in the booking documents, then check the aviation, travel or consumer-protection routes in the country relevant to the booking. The applicable route may differ for an airline ticket, an accommodation booking, a package, or an agency failure.

- United Kingdom: The CAA describes different routes involving ATOL holders, airlines and trade associations in particular travel-agent failure scenarios. Check its guidance against your situation rather than assuming one route covers every booking.
- British Columbia: Consumer Protection BC describes the Travel Assurance Fund, which may be available when its conditions are met and after other steps. It is a local scheme, not a general entitlement.
- Other locations: Contact the relevant local consumer-protection or travel authority for guidance on your seller, product and payment method.
If departure or check-in is close
Treat verification as urgent. Contact the OTA and provider through their fastest official channels, explain the departure or check-in time, and request a definite status in writing. If you are considering paying for a replacement booking, first establish whether the original reservation is live and whether it can be cancelled or refunded. The available guidance does not establish a universally safe approach to duplicate bookings, so weigh the risk of being charged for both against the risk of losing the travel service.
Watch for suspicious requests for extra payment
Do not pay an unexpected demand through an unusual channel until you have verified it. The FTC identifies wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency and some payment-app-only demands as scam warning signs in travel-rental contexts. Confirm any payment request using the OTA’s official app or website, or contact the provider through independently verified details.

For lodging, check the property’s cancellation, refund, payment and check-in terms. New Zealand Consumer Protection notes that these conditions should be set out in the accommodation terms and that problems are generally raised with the property owner even when a third-party site was used. The specific contract and local law determine what applies.
