Start at Settings > System > About and check Device specifications > System type. Then confirm app support with its publisher and accessory or driver support with its manufacturer. Native Arm64 apps and Arm64 drivers are the clearest support paths; emulation can run some apps made for other architectures, but it does not make unsupported drivers compatible.
First, confirm your PC runs Windows on Arm
Open Settings > System > About and look under Device specifications > System type for an Arm-based processor. Microsoft describes this check in its guide to installing printers on Arm PCs.
Record the PC model and Windows version as well. Compatibility can depend on the Windows release, hardware, app version, and the features you need. Do not apply older Windows 10 Arm guidance to a Windows 11 PC: Microsoft’s legacy guidance and current Windows 11 guidance describe different limitations.
How to check whether a Windows app will work
Look up the exact app and version with its publisher
Check the app maker’s current support or download page for Windows on Arm or Arm64 support. Confirm the exact edition or version, plug-ins, and essential features—not just the app’s name. When compatibility is unclear, Microsoft advises checking with the software vendor.

Prefer a native Arm64 version when available
A native Arm64 release is built for Arm processors and is the clearest compatibility path. Some apps built for other processor architectures can run through Windows emulation. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ discusses x86 app support and x64 emulation on Windows 11. Emulation does not guarantee that every function, plug-in, or dependency will work.
Check anything that relies on drivers or low-level access
Emulating an app does not translate an incompatible driver into an Arm64 driver. Give extra scrutiny to apps that install drivers or customize Windows, as well as games that use anti-cheat drivers, third-party antivirus tools, virtualization software, and assistive technology. Ask the publisher whether the precise feature you rely on is supported on your Windows release and device.

How to check whether an accessory will work
Search the manufacturer’s documentation or contact support with the accessory’s exact model number. Ask whether it works on your Windows version on Arm, whether all the features you need are supported, and whether it depends on a driver. Microsoft says peripherals work when their required drivers are built into Windows 11 or the hardware developer has released Arm64 drivers for the device. Printers: try Windows setup if the manufacturer installer fails
If a printer maker’s installer does not work, use Windows’ normal add-printer instructions. Microsoft documents this route in its printer installation guidance for Arm PCs. Follow different instructions if the printer manufacturer specifically provides them. A printer appearing in Windows does not by itself establish that every model-specific feature is available, so check the manufacturer’s guidance for functions you depend on.

A practical compatibility checklist
- Identify the PC: Open Settings > System > About; record the Arm-based system type, PC model, and Windows version.
- Check each essential app: Find the publisher’s current statement for the specific app version, plug-ins, and features you use.
- Check how it runs: Prefer a native Arm64 version where offered. If it relies on emulation, verify that its important functions and dependencies are supported.
- Check each accessory: Ask the manufacturer about the exact model, required features, and whether Windows includes its driver or an Arm64 driver is available.
- Verify specialist software separately: Confirm support directly with the makers of anti-cheat games, antivirus, assistive technology, virtualization, and other driver-dependent tools.
- Use community lists only as a starting point: Microsoft points to Works on WoA, a third-party open-source list with community-supplied compatibility information. Confirm important decisions with the app publisher or device manufacturer.
Keep Windows 11 and Windows 10 guidance separate
Microsoft’s current FAQ covers Windows 11 Arm PCs, including version 24H2 and Prism emulation. The same FAQ describes Prism as available on Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon X series processors and says it is coming to other Windows 11 devices; availability can change, so check Microsoft’s current page and the app publisher’s documentation. Microsoft’s separate legacy Windows 10 Arm guidance has different limitations, including that x64 apps do not run. Check your specific Windows release rather than assuming Windows 11 advice applies to Windows 10, or vice versa.
