If fuel prices rise during an oil supply shock, focus first on reducing journeys you can avoid, then check whether current government support applies to you. Higher global prices do not, by themselves, mean your local stations have run out of fuel: verify local availability through official updates before changing plans. Household steps can ease fuel use and spending, but cannot replace oil supplies lost in a major disruption.
First, distinguish higher prices from a local shortage
A supply disruption can put pressure on global markets for crude oil and refined products. In a report dated 20 March 2026, the International Energy Agency (IEA) described disruption affecting crude oil, diesel, jet fuel and liquefied petroleum gas. That market context is not a live update on prices or station availability in your area. The IEA’s report announcement explains the measures it considered in response.
If you suspect a local shortage, check updates from your local or national authorities and, where available, local fuel retailers. A global price story does not confirm that a particular station is out of fuel. The sources cited here do not establish current availability in every location, so do not assume a shortage or stockpile fuel on that basis.
Reduce fuel use with changes that fit your circumstances
Start with changes that are practical for your work, routes and household. The IEA’s demand-side options are not equally feasible everywhere; weigh potential fuel savings against safety, accessibility, time and local transport availability.

Combine or avoid car journeys
Group errands into one outing instead of making separate trips. For suitable short journeys, walking, cycling or public transport may replace a car trip. Whether those options work depends on local routes, safety, accessibility and weather.
Work remotely when your job allows it
The IEA estimates that three additional remote-work days could reduce oil consumption from cars by 2%–6% at national level, with average potential reductions of around 20% for individual drivers whose jobs permit remote work. These are estimates, not a forecast of an individual household’s savings. The IEA report sets out the measure and its context.

Share rides and drive efficiently
Car sharing and efficient driving are among the IEA’s immediate road-transport options. They can reduce the number of separate car trips or fuel used on a trip, but the cited report does not establish a specific savings percentage for an individual driver.
Follow posted speed limits
The IEA estimates that a highway speed-limit reduction of 10 km/h could reduce an individual driver’s oil consumption by 5%–10%. This is an estimate associated with a speed-limit measure, not a reason to break posted limits or drive at a speed that is unsafe for conditions.

Check for support, but confirm eligibility and availability
Search current national, regional or local government information for fuel, transport or energy-related assistance, and check consumer-protection guidance in your jurisdiction. Programs and eligibility differ by place and can change; neither a general policy discussion nor an international report establishes that a benefit is currently available to every reader.
The IEA says targeted consumer support matters because public fiscal resources are limited. What household actions can—and cannot—do
Road transport accounts for around 45% of global oil demand, according to the IEA’s 2026 report announcement. That helps explain why transport measures feature prominently in its response options, but it does not mean every household can make the same changes or achieve the same savings.
The IEA says demand-side measures can reduce consumption and affordability pressure, but they cannot replace supply lost in a major disruption. In its 20 March 2026 report summary, it identified restoring disrupted transit as the single most important action for returning flows to stability. Consumers can adjust their own use and seek applicable support; resolving a supply disruption requires action beyond individual households.

For historical context, IEA member countries agreed on 11 March 2026 to release 400 million barrels from emergency reserves, which the IEA described as its largest stock release. That was a decision at that time, not evidence of current reserve levels or local fuel availability. The IEA announcement provides the relevant context.
