There is no single material that replaces rare earth elements across motors and electronics. Ferrite and AlNiCo can replace rare-earth permanent magnets in some designs; induction, electrically excited synchronous and switched-reluctance motors can avoid permanent magnets altogether. In electronics, the answer depends on whether rare earths are used in a magnet, a display or lighting phosphor, or another component. Every option involves design trade-offs, and some newer materials remain under development.

Which alternatives can reduce or avoid rare earths?

There are two different approaches: use a different permanent-magnet material, or redesign the motor so it does not need a permanent magnet. A third approach—using less rare earth in an existing magnet—reduces demand but is not full substitution.

Route What changes What to weigh What the evidence establishes
Ferrite or AlNiCo magnets Replace the magnet composition while retaining a permanent-magnet motor design Magnetic performance, motor size and weight, operating conditions, cost and manufacturing These are established rare-earth-free magnet families, and European research has examined adapting them. The cited sources do not establish them as universal drop-in replacements in traction motors. European Commission CORDIS project report; European Commission JRC assessment.
Induction, electrically excited synchronous or switched-reluctance motor Change the motor architecture to avoid a rare-earth permanent magnet Efficiency over the intended duty cycle, power density, packaging, noise, vibration and control needs These are recognized rare-earth-free motor approaches, with architecture-specific trade-offs. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Electric Motors Research and Development; JRC assessment.
Iron-nitride or nanocrystalline concepts Develop a different permanent magnet or soft-magnet design Performance, durability, manufacturing readiness, cost and ability to scale DOE project selections document development work, not proof of broad commercial deployment. DOE 2024 Critical Materials Accelerator selections; DOE rare-earth-element-free axial-flux motor project.
Reduce rare-earth content in NdFeB magnets Change magnet processing or motor design rather than eliminate rare earths Retained performance, operating temperature and processing requirements DOE identifies grain-boundary diffusion and redesign for lower operating temperatures as ways to reduce or eliminate dysprosium in NdFeB magnets; they do not necessarily remove all rare earths. DOE 2023 Critical Materials Assessment.
Recycle magnets and electronic scrap Recover existing materials for reuse Collection, separation, recovery quality and economics DOE and the IEA describe recycling efforts and opportunities. Recycling returns material to supply; it does not substitute a different material for a rare earth. DOE Electronics Scrap Recycling Advancement Prize; IEA, Rare Earth Elements.

How can an electric motor work without rare-earth magnets?

Permanent-magnet motors use magnets to create the rotor’s magnetic field. A motor can avoid rare-earth magnets either by using a different magnet material or by generating the field another way. These are not interchangeable strategies: one changes the magnet, while the other changes the machine.

Ferrite and AlNiCo permanent magnets

Ferrite and AlNiCo are rare-earth-free permanent-magnet families. They may suit designs able to accommodate their magnetic performance and resulting motor requirements, but changing magnet chemistry can affect the size, weight and operating characteristics of the complete motor. The European Commission’s REFREEPERMAG project documented work on adapting ferrite and AlNiCo and developing other rare-earth-free magnet families. That evidence supports continued engineering, not a universal one-for-one replacement for high-performance traction motors.

Induction motors

An induction motor does not rely on a permanent magnet. DOE describes induction motors as reliable and capable of high starting torque, while noting lower power density and overall efficiency than interior permanent-magnet (IPM) motors. Whether that trade-off is acceptable depends on the vehicle or device, its operating pattern and packaging constraints; peak performance alone does not settle the comparison.

Electrically excited synchronous motors

In an electrically excited synchronous motor, the rotor field is produced without a permanent magnet. The JRC identifies this architecture among rare-earth-free alternatives considered for battery-electric vehicles. The cited material does not provide a common set of figures for its efficiency, cost, packaging or maintenance compared with the other motor types, so those questions require application-specific evaluation.

Switched-reluctance motors

Switched-reluctance motors use a different rotor and torque-production architecture rather than permanent magnets. DOE describes them as rugged and potentially inexpensive to manufacture, but identifies noise, vibration, lower efficiency and additional control requirements as challenges in vehicle traction. Those drawbacks are relevant design constraints, not reasons to treat the architecture as unsuitable for every application.

Iron nitride and nanocrystalline designs

Iron-nitride permanent magnets and nanocrystalline soft-magnet concepts are development paths, not established proof of widespread use. DOE’s 2024 Critical Materials Accelerator selections describe $2,699,810 in federal funding for Niron Magnetics to design, analyze and fabricate a prototype motor using iron-nitride permanent-magnet material. The page makes proposed performance outcomes conditional on success; funding and a prototype project are not independently verified commercial results. A separate DOE project describes a rare-earth-free axial-flux motor using nanocrystalline soft magnets.

What can replace rare earths in electronics?

“Electronics” is not one material category. A rare-earth magnet in a motor or speaker, a phosphor in a display or lamp, and a semiconductor serve different functions. A replacement has to work for the specific component; there is no general-purpose rare-earth-free material for all electronic devices.

Component or function What the sources establish How to interpret it
Magnets in motors and other devices Ferrite and AlNiCo are rare-earth-free magnet families; some motor architectures do not need permanent magnets. CORDIS; DOE. A viable alternative depends on the component’s required magnetic performance and, for motors, the wider machine design.
Phosphors in lighting and displays, including LEDs The JRC assessment examined critical materials used in phosphors and LEDs and reported no complete direct commercial replacement for the assessed materials at the time of its assessment. JRC assessment. That is a finding about the technologies and materials assessed, not a timeless claim about every display or lighting product. Component substitution and material efficiency can reduce demand without establishing a universal replacement.
Semiconductors and power electronics DOE identifies gallium and germanium as materials used in semiconductors; they are not rare earth elements. DOE also discusses silicon-carbide power electronics in electric-machine research. DOE, Critical Minerals and Materials; DOE, Get Your Motor Running. These semiconductor materials and silicon carbide have different roles from permanent-magnet materials. They should not be presented as direct replacements for a rare-earth magnet.

The JRC assessment covers europium, terbium, yttrium, indium, gallium, germanium, neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium in lighting, wind turbines and electric-vehicle applications. Its finding about the lack of a complete direct commercial replacement applies to the assessed phosphors, LEDs and permanent magnets at the time of the assessment; it does not mean that every component must use rare earths or that partial demand reduction is impossible.

When does using less rare earth count as a solution?

Some designs retain a rare-earth magnet but reduce how much of a particular element it needs. DOE identifies grain-boundary diffusion and motor redesign for lower operating temperatures as routes to reduce or eliminate dysprosium in NdFeB magnets. This is a way to lower rare-earth intensity in an existing magnet—not evidence that the magnet has become rare-earth-free.

What can recycling do—and what can’t it do?

Recycling recovers rare earths already in products and can return them to supply chains; it does not replace the material requirement in a magnet or electronic component. DOE’s e-scrap work includes projects to recover rare earths from electronic scrap and recirculate NdFeB magnets. The IEA points to growing end-of-life volumes from electric-vehicle motors, wind turbines and electronic waste as a potential recycling opportunity. Recovery depends on collecting and processing those products, so an opportunity is not the same as an achieved recovery volume.

DOE states an award ceiling of up to $4 million for its Electronics Scrap Recycling Advancement Prize. That is a program funding limit, not a measured recycling result.

How to judge a proposed replacement

For a motor, compare the complete machine and its intended use, not just magnet chemistry. For an electronic component, first identify the function the rare earth performs; a semiconductor substitution does not answer a magnet or phosphor question.

  • Identify the component and function. Establish whether the issue is a permanent magnet, phosphor, LED, semiconductor or another part.
  • Separate material substitution from architecture change. Ferrite changes the magnet material; induction or switched-reluctance changes how the motor works.
  • Compare system-level requirements. For motors, include efficiency over the actual duty cycle, power density, size, weight, noise, vibration, control needs and manufacturing.
  • Check maturity claims. A research project, funding award or prototype aim demonstrates development activity, not broad commercial availability.
  • Distinguish elimination from reduction and recovery. Using less dysprosium, recycling rare-earth magnets and avoiding rare-earth magnets are three different outcomes.

The available sources do not establish one comparable performance or market-share dataset spanning ferrite, AlNiCo, iron nitride, different motor architectures and all electronics applications. A universal replacement percentage would therefore be misleading; the defensible answer is specific to the component, design and evidence available for it.
