The exchange and account type determine whether a live position can change modes: Binance’s cited instructions block changes while orders or positions are open, and OKX says an opened position cannot be switched. Bybit’s Unified Trading Account (UTA) allows an account-wide change only when specific collateral, borrowing and liquidation checks pass.
First check whether your open position can change modes
Do not assume that a margin-mode selector will convert a live position. Exchanges can apply the setting to a new trade, a specific contract or an entire account—and their rules differ.
| Platform and account context | Can you change mode with an open position? | Scope and key conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Binance Futures | No, according to the cited support instructions: open orders or positions block a change. | The setting applies to the selected contract. The support page was published on 2020-01-03; its search result reported an update on 2026-01-14. Verify the current interface and rule for your account. |
| Bybit Unified Trading Account (UTA) | A Cross/Portfolio-to-Isolated switch may be possible if the account passes the listed checks; this is not an unconditional conversion. | The mode applies to the entire account, not independently to each trading pair. Bybit’s UTA page was last updated 2026-06-23. |
| OKX Futures | No for an opened position, according to OKX’s help page. | The selector is used to choose a mode for trading. The reviewed page text did not expose a publication or update date. |
These are platform-specific rules, not a universal exchange policy. Check the official instructions for your exact exchange, account version, contract and margin asset before acting.
How to change the setting where the exchange allows it
Binance Futures
- Open the Futures trading interface and select the relevant contract.
- Click Cross at the top right, choose the desired margin mode and confirm. Binance describes this setting as applying to the selected contract.
- If you have open orders or positions, Binance’s cited instructions say you cannot change the mode. Do not cancel orders or close a position without first considering the execution, fee and risk consequences.
Binance says cross margin shares margin only among positions using the same asset type; it does not describe every asset in every wallet as one shared pool. The cited support page is dated 2020-01-03, although its search result reported an update on 2026-01-14, so confirm that the workflow and eligibility rule still match your logged-in interface. Bybit Unified Trading Account
Bybit UTA’s setting is account-wide: you cannot choose a different margin mode for each trading pair. For a Cross/Portfolio-to-Isolated switch, Bybit lists all of the following conditions:
- No options orders or positions.
- No Spot Margin orders, and Spot Margin disabled.
- No existing borrowings.
- Enough assets to cover the increased margin and allocate to positions without triggering liquidation after the switch.
- The mark price is not worse than the position’s post-switch liquidation price.
Review the account’s displayed requirements and risk figures before confirming. Bybit says Isolated mode disables Spot Margin, Auto Margin Replenishment and collateral switching by default. Its UTA guidance was last updated 2026-06-23. Bybit: How to Switch Margin Modes on UTA

OKX Futures
- Open Trade > Futures.
- In the order panel, open the current margin-mode selector, choose Isolated and confirm.
OKX says an opened position cannot be switched between cross and isolated. Treat this selector as a choice for trading, not as a confirmed way to convert an existing position. OKX: How do I switch margin mode (cross/isolated)?
What cross and isolated margin change
Cross margin uses eligible collateral according to the exchange’s rules. The pool is not necessarily universal: Binance describes sharing margin across contracts using the same asset type, while Bybit UTA describes multiple eligible assets converted to USD value.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.

Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
Isolated margin assigns collateral to a position rather than exposing the same shared pool in the same way. Bybit says the maximum loss for an isolated position is limited to its initial margin plus any extra margin added, under the cited contract rules; additional margin is not automatically drawn to that position, though it can be added manually. OKX likewise describes isolated margin as limiting a position’s margin to the assets being traded. The exact treatment depends on platform and contract rules.
Isolated does not mean liquidation-proof: a position can still be liquidated if its margin is insufficient. Bybit also warns that adjusting leverage resets previously added extra margin. Bybit: Isolated Margin, Cross Margin, and Portfolio Margin
What to review before confirming a change
- Account and contract: identify the exchange, account version (such as UTA), contract and margin asset; a setting may be per contract on one platform and account-wide on another.
- Eligibility: check open orders, borrowing, Spot Margin use and collateral requirements. Whether these block a change depends on the platform and account.
- Liquidation risk: review the margin allocation, leverage and displayed liquidation price or account maintenance-margin trigger. Bybit’s UTA comparison distinguishes position liquidation at Mark Price from account maintenance-margin triggers in Cross mode; those details are specific to that account framework.
- Extra margin: on Bybit, account for the stated reset of previously added extra margin if you adjust leverage.
- Confirmation: read the confirmation panel, then verify the resulting mode on the exact contract or account. Labels and rules can change.
Why an API setting does not prove a live-position switch is available
Bybit’s cited API documentation is narrower than its UTA help guidance: the endpoint is unsupported for UTA 2.0 and lists UTA 1.0 inverse plus Classic linear and inverse products. It requires a symbol, a mode value, and equal buy- and sell-leverage values. That technical endpoint description does not establish that every account version has a UI option or that every open position can be converted. Bybit API: Switch Position Mode
