Tips to Get Ahead in the Job Market

Choose target roles using more than growth projections, tailor applications, build connections, prepare for interviews and pay discussions, and use BLS, CareerOneStop, and USAJOBS resources.

To get ahead in the job market, focus your search: choose roles that fit your skills and circumstances, tailor each application, build professional connections, and prepare for interviews and pay discussions. Use free official labor-market and job-search tools to guide your decisions, then review your targets as openings and requirements change.

How can you find jobs that fit your skills?

Start with a short list of roles rather than applying indiscriminately. Compare each occupation on several measures: projected openings and employment change, wages, typical education and training, related experience, local availability, and whether the work suits your interests and constraints.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2025–2035 employment projections, released in 2026, project national employment to increase by 5.9 million jobs, or 3.5 percent, from 170.3 million in 2025 to 176.2 million in 2035. These are long-term national projections, not observed outcomes or a forecast of an individual applicant’s chances. The occupation-level data table includes projected annual openings, employment change, wages, typical education, related work experience, and on-the-job training.

Do not choose a field on growth percentage alone. A high percentage may not mean many openings, and national figures do not tell you whether employers near you are hiring or what they require. Use the BLS job-search and career exploration guidance alongside current local vacancies and your own priorities.

How should you improve your resume and application?

Make the connection between the vacancy and your experience easy to see. Identify the skills and responsibilities the employer names, then describe relevant work, projects, training, or results using accurate language that reflects what you actually did. Keep the application clear and focused on the role rather than relying on a single generic version for every opening.

BLS points jobseekers to CareerOneStop resources for resume preparation. That is a useful free starting point; the BLS resource does not prescribe one universally best resume format.

How can networking help your search?

Build relationships alongside applications, not instead of them. Ask people in roles you are considering, former colleagues, professional associations, or local career services for specific information about the work, skills employers value, and where openings are posted. A concise, respectful question is more useful than asking a contact to secure you a job.

BLS identifies networking among the job-search resources available through CareerOneStop. It does not establish that networking is more effective than applying directly in every field, so use it as one route to information and connections while continuing to pursue suitable vacancies.

How can you prepare for interviews and pay discussions?

Prepare a few concise examples that show how you handled work relevant to the role. Connect each example to a skill or responsibility in the job posting, and practice explaining your contribution clearly. BLS lists interview preparation among CareerOneStop’s job-search support areas.

Before compensation discussions, research wages for the occupation and location and consider the full terms of the offer, not just the headline pay. BLS and CareerOneStop identify salary negotiation as a resource area, but no single script or outcome applies to every employer, role, or applicant.

Where can you find reliable job outlook and vacancies?

Use each official resource for the question it is designed to answer:

  • BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook and occupation data: Compare outlook, projected openings, wages, and typical education or training requirements.
  • CareerOneStop: Find job-search support, including resume preparation, networking, interviewing, and salary negotiation. BLS describes CareerOneStop as a free online resource for jobseekers, students, businesses, and career advisors.
  • USAJOBS: Search for federal vacancies. BLS identifies USAJOBS as the official federal employment site, with listings searchable by agency, title, salary, location, or field; it also supports notifications, saved application documents, and applying.

For federal roles, use BLS’s jobseeker page to reach USAJOBS and other official resources. General job-search services and the federal vacancy portal serve different purposes; choose the route that matches the employer you are targeting.

When should you adjust your job-search plan?

Revisit your target roles and current local postings regularly. If suitable openings are scarce, requirements repeatedly do not match your qualifications, or the available pay and location do not work for you, reconsider the role list, search area, or skills you may need to develop.

BLS projections cover a ten-year horizon, are updated annually, and are not short-term forecasts. The agency cautions that occupation-level estimates are subject to error and should not be the sole basis for a career choice. Check the BLS projection FAQs and data overview for how to interpret them; use live vacancies and employer requirements to make nearer-term decisions.
