Football clubs make money mainly through matchday income, broadcasting and competition distributions, and commercial activity. But revenue is not profit, and neither tells you by itself whether a club can pay its bills: wages, transfer accounting, financing costs, debt repayments and owner support all affect its financial position.
How do football clubs make money?
Club revenue generally comes from three streams. Their relative importance varies by league, club and season.
Matchday income
Ticket sales and hospitality generate matchday receipts. Stadium capacity, attendance, pricing and how often a club hosts matches all affect this income.
Broadcasting and competition distributions
Clubs receive distributions for domestic league and cup participation and, where applicable, continental competitions. The amounts can depend on the competition and its distribution arrangements, as well as sporting performance.

Commercial activity
Sponsorship, merchandising, licensing and related business activity make up commercial income. Audience size and commercial reach can shape how much a club earns from these sources.
Deloitte reported that the European football market generated €38 billion in revenue during the 2023/24 season. That is an aggregate for the market covered by the report, not the revenue of a typical club. Why revenue is not the same as profit or cash
Revenue records income earned under the applicable accounting basis. Profit or loss reflects recognized income less recognized expenses. Cash flow tracks money received and paid. These measures can diverge because clubs may incur costs before paying them, receive income after earning it, or record a transfer fee over several years rather than all at once.

For example, a club may report substantial revenue but still make an accounting loss if its wages, operating expenses, player-registration charges and finance costs are higher. It may also report an accounting profit without having the cash immediately available to meet a bill due now.

Wages and operating expenses
Player and coach wages are major costs, but they are not the whole cost base. Clubs also pay for operations and other activities, while financing liabilities can create interest and other finance costs. A wage figure alone therefore cannot establish whether a club is profitable or financially secure.
Transfer fees: cash paid versus accounting expense
A transfer fee headline is not necessarily the amount paid in cash during that season or the expense recorded in that season. Clubs may pay transfer fees in instalments. Where a player registration is capitalised, the acquisition cost is generally recognized as an expense over the player’s contract term through amortisation. When a player is sold, the club may record a disposal gain or loss based on the accounting value of the registration and the sale proceeds.

UEFA’s rules address consistent accounting treatment for player registrations and define relevant expenses, including finance costs connected with financing and financial liabilities. How debt and owner funding affect a club
Debt is a liability: the club owes money to a lender or another creditor, potentially with interest and a repayment schedule. An owner can provide funding as a loan, which leaves the club owing principal and possibly interest, or as equity, which adds capital without creating the same repayment claim. Owner funding is not operating revenue merely because cash enters the club.
UEFA says its equity-contribution requirements were tightened to prevent additional debt. The distinction matters when assessing support: a club receiving cash from its owner may still have a liability if that cash was lent rather than invested as equity. Owner wealth alone does not show whether the club can meet its own obligations. UEFA financial sustainability.

What UEFA’s financial sustainability rules cover
UEFA’s club-monitoring framework is organized around solvency, stability and cost control. It is a regulatory system for clubs within UEFA competition monitoring, not a universal rulebook for every football club; domestic competitions may apply separate rules.
Squad-cost rule
From 2025/26, UEFA’s permanent squad-cost ceiling is 70% of club revenue for defined player and coach wages, transfer costs and agent fees in its monitoring calculation. The published transition thresholds were 90% in 2023/24 and 80% in 2024/25. This is not a cap on every club expense, nor should it be treated as a universal wage limit: it is a defined calculation for UEFA monitoring. UEFA financial sustainability.
Football earnings and overdue payables
The regulations also include a football-earnings rule and a requirement concerning overdue payables. These are based on defined relevant income and expenses, monitoring periods and permitted adjustments. They are more specific than a simple instruction that clubs cannot spend more than they earn; the regulations and their calculation schedules set out the applicable definitions and adjustments. How to assess whether a club is financially healthy
Look beyond a single headline figure. Four measures answer different questions:
- Revenue: How much income does the club generate, and how concentrated is it in matchday, broadcasting or commercial sources?
- Accounting profit or loss: What remains after recognized expenses, including wages, transfer amortisation, disposal results and financing costs?
- Operating cash flow: Is the club generating cash from its operations, and when do receipts and payments actually occur?
- Net debt: What is the club’s debt position under the definition used, and what are the associated interest costs and repayment dates?
Also examine the club’s dependence on further owner support and whether that support is debt or equity. Deloitte’s methodology explains that operating profit or loss and net debt or funds are derived from financial-statement data using defined aggregation choices, so figures may not be directly comparable across reports without checking the reporting entity and definitions. When comparing clubs, use the same financial year, reporting entity, currency and metric definitions. Then compare their revenue mix, squad-cost burden relative to the relevant revenue base, transfer cash commitments against amortisation and disposal results, debt terms and repayment profile, and reliance on continuing owner funding. A high revenue total alone does not establish financial strength.
