The ETH/BTC ratio can show which asset outperformed over that interval; volume, open interest and funding offer context, not reliable buy-or-sell signals on their own.
How do you make a fair BTC-versus-ETH comparison?
Set the comparison before reading the signals. Choose a quote currency, an observation window and a consistent source for both assets. A 15-minute move, a daily trend and a multi-month comparison can tell different stories, so state whether you are looking intraday, daily, weekly or longer term.
Also identify what the data represents. An exchange spot quote, an aggregated reference benchmark and a futures settlement are different measures. CME Group says its cryptocurrency real-time indices are calculated each second, while its reference rates are once-a-day benchmarks. Its spot and cross-rate feed aggregates information from multiple sources and is described as indicative. A live exchange quote and a benchmark timestamp may therefore differ by design.
When comparing market-data feeds or venues, check whether they cover spot or derivatives, how many venues they aggregate, how often values update, what timestamps mean, which units and contract specifications apply, how much history is available, and whether access has fees or restrictions.

What do spot price, volume and liquidity tell you?
Spot price: direction over a defined interval
For each asset, describe the price as rising, falling or range-bound over the same interval and in the same currency. Price direction shows what happened during that window; it does not establish what happens next.
Volume: how much traded
Volume measures trades over a chosen interval. Read it alongside the price move, using comparable sources and periods. More activity can accompany a rise or a fall, so volume alone does not identify which side is likely to win.
Liquidity: how readily an order may execute
Check comparable market depth and bid-ask spreads where available. They help assess execution conditions, which a price chart or volume total cannot show by itself. Avoid treating one asset’s aggregate exchange data as comparable to the other asset’s single-exchange feed unless you clearly disclose the difference.

Does rising futures open interest mean price will go up?
No. Open interest is the number of contracts still outstanding and not settled for a specific derivatives market, as Coin Metrics defines it. Futures volume counts contracts traded during a period; open interest counts contracts that remain open. Neither measure, by itself, reveals whether the market is positioned for a rise or a fall.

Interpret derivatives activity with the price move, venue, contract type, contract size, expiry and unit of measurement. Contract counts on one exchange are not a total-market measure, and counts are not directly comparable if contract specifications differ.
A historical example illustrates why BTC and ETH activity should be checked separately. CME Group’s Q4 2025 figures are venue-specific averages for that quarter, not current totals or a directional signal:

What does the ETH/BTC ratio mean?
The ETH/BTC ratio shows Ether’s value relative to Bitcoin: it tracks how much BTC is required to buy one ETH. If the ratio rises over your chosen interval, Ether has strengthened against Bitcoin; if it falls, Bitcoin has outperformed Ether. That relative-performance comparison can be useful even when both assets’ prices in dollars move in the same direction.

CME Group describes an Ether/Bitcoin Ratio reference rate, a real-time index and a futures product. Its real-time index is calculated each second. The ratio answers a different question from either asset’s USD chart: not whether crypto prices rose overall, but which of these two assets performed better against the other.

How should you interpret perpetual-futures funding?
Funding is a payment mechanism used to encourage perpetual futures prices to stay close to the underlying spot price. Coin Metrics explains that long holders pay short holders, or vice versa, depending on the rate. A funding figure therefore describes a market mechanism and the payment direction for the specified contract; it is not a guaranteed forecast of spot-price direction.
When comparing BTC and ETH funding, record the venue, funding interval, sign, how persistent the reading is, and the futures-versus-spot basis. A single reading without those details can be misleading. The reviewed documentation does not establish predictive funding thresholds.

CME Group describes Bitcoin volatility futures based on 30-day forward-looking implied volatility. That is a Bitcoin-specific product detail, not evidence that a comparable Ether measure is available or that one asset is more volatile than the other. The information reviewed here does not establish a BTC-versus-ETH volatility ranking.
How should news and regulation fit into the comparison?
Treat macroeconomic news, protocol events and regulatory developments as context to investigate, not automatic trading signals. Their relevance can vary by timing and by asset, and they do not replace the market-data comparison.
For U.S. readers, the SEC issued an interpretive release on March 17, 2026, addressing how federal securities laws apply to certain crypto assets and transactions; it became effective March 23, 2026, and notes CFTC guidance. That is a dated regulatory reference, not a statement about the legal status of every crypto asset or transaction. Verify current rules and the circumstances relevant to you before relying on regulatory information.

- Invalidation condition: the observable change that would show your thesis is no longer intact.

This process organizes evidence and risk; it does not establish that a trade will be profitable.
