Bitcoin vs. Ethereum: Purpose, Fees, and Network Upgrades

Bitcoin focuses on peer-to-peer payments; Ethereum adds programmable contracts and applications. Their transaction fees and upgrade processes work differently, so cost and required action depend on the transaction and network change.

Bitcoin and Ethereum are both public blockchain networks, but they were built with different priorities: Bitcoin centers on peer-to-peer payments and settlement, while Ethereum adds a programmable platform for smart contracts and applications. Their fee systems reflect that difference, and neither network is always cheaper. Bitcoin fees depend on transaction data and competition for block space; Ethereum fees depend on computational work and network demand.

What is the difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum?

Bitcoin’s founding design is peer-to-peer electronic cash: its 2008 whitepaper describes payments sent online directly between parties without a financial institution. It uses digital signatures, proof of work, and a peer-to-peer network to address the problem of double spending. Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System

Ethereum was proposed as a programmable blockchain. Its smart contracts can encode rules and update shared state, enabling decentralized applications as well as transfers of ether, Ethereum’s native asset. Ethereum’s original whitepaper is a historical document: the current Ethereum whitepaper page cautions that it was published in 2014, before launch, and no longer fully reflects the network today.

The distinction is about primary design aims, not exclusive capabilities. Bitcoin can be used with additional protocol layers and services, while Ethereum also supports value transfer. Neither is a universal substitute for the other.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Why are Ethereum gas fees different from Bitcoin transaction fees?

Bitcoin: a fee offer for block space

Bitcoin transactions compete for limited block space. A fee is generally an offer to have a transaction included, and Bitcoin.org explains that the fee depends on transaction data size rather than the value being transferred. A large-value payment therefore does not automatically cost more to send than a small-value payment. Demand, transaction construction, and the sender’s desired confirmation timing all affect the fee and how quickly a transaction may be included. Bitcoin.org’s transactions guide

Ethereum: payment for computation and shared resources

Ethereum gas measures the computational work and network resources a transaction uses. A basic ether transfer and an interaction with a smart contract can require different amounts of computation, so they need not use the same amount of gas. The fee also responds to demand across the network. Ethereum’s gas documentation

Under EIP-1559, Ethereum’s base fee adjusts according to gas demand: it rises when usage is above the target and falls when usage is below it. The base fee is burned rather than paid to a validator. A sender can also specify a priority fee, which can encourage timely inclusion, and a maximum fee per gas to cap what they are willing to pay. The maximum is a limit, not a fixed charge; the actual fee depends on the transaction’s gas use and applicable fee components. EIP-1559

How to compare costs fairly

There is no timeless fee winner. A useful live comparison needs a timestamp and like-for-like transaction descriptions: for example, a Bitcoin transfer against an ether transfer, or a specific Ethereum contract interaction. It should also identify whether the Ethereum transaction is on mainnet or a layer 2, because those are different transaction environments and their costs should not be presented as interchangeable. No current numeric fee comparison is stated here.

How do Bitcoin and Ethereum upgrades work?

Bitcoin: proposals require broad coordination

Bitcoin protocol changes depend on proposals and coordination among participants who maintain, implement, or adopt software. A 2016 statement from the Bitcoin Core project says contributors sought protocol improvements they considered technically sound and likely to receive widespread support and adoption. That statement expresses the project contributors’ perspective; it is not a binding constitution for all Bitcoin participants. The same statement notes that hard forks break compatibility with earlier software. Bitcoin Core’s January 7, 2016 statement

Ethereum: roadmap and coordinated client upgrades

Ethereum publishes a roadmap and implements protocol changes through coordinated software upgrades. The official roadmap lists The Merge on September 15, 2022; Shapella on April 12, 2023; Dencun on March 13, 2024; Pectra on May 7, 2025; and Fusaka on December 3, 2025. On the roadmap page updated September 24, 2026, Glamsterdam was listed as in development for Q4 2026 and Hegotá for 2027. Those future entries are plans, not guarantees; Ethereum says the roadmap is subject to change. Ethereum roadmap

The Merge moved Ethereum from energy-intensive mining to proof of stake. Ethereum.org’s roadmap page, updated September 24, 2026, estimates that this transition reduced energy consumption by approximately 99.95%. This is an estimate about energy use, not a statement about transaction fees.

What should users do when a network upgrade happens?

  • For ordinary users: Do not assume an upgrade means you must move coins or convert assets. Ethereum’s general roadmap guidance says regular users usually do not need to take action simply to secure assets because of an upgrade. Follow the official notice for the specific change.
  • For node operators: Check the upgrade’s official instructions and update the relevant client software on the required schedule. Ethereum’s roadmap explains that protocol upgrades require coordinated software changes, including updates by node operators.
  • For Bitcoin users and service operators: Check communications from the wallet, exchange, or node software you use. Adoption and coordination matter, and the action required can depend on the particular change and the software involved.
