In the U.S., look up the pharmacy in the pharmacy board’s official licensing database for the relevant state, using the FDA’s BeSafeRx resources to find the right board. Check that the listed business identity and address match the website. Before ordering, also confirm the pharmacy requires prescriptions for prescription medicines, gives a physical U.S. address and telephone number, and makes a licensed pharmacist available. These checks can help you assess the seller; they cannot prove that a particular medicine package is genuine.
How to check a U.S. online pharmacy’s license
- Find the relevant state pharmacy board. Start with the FDA’s BeSafeRx online pharmacy resources, which link to state boards and provide a location tool. Pharmacy licensing rules can involve both the state where the business operates and the state where the patient is located.
- Search the board’s official license database. Compare the pharmacy’s actual business name and address with the official record. Do not treat a badge or logo on the seller’s own website as proof: fake storefronts can imitate legitimate pharmacies.
- Check the listing’s status and details. If the pharmacy is not listed, FDA consumer guidance says not to use it. If it is listed, continue checking its prescription policy, contact details, and pharmacist access; a listing alone does not settle every concern.
- Use other screening tools as secondary checks. FDA also points consumers to NABP’s Buy Safely tool, which labels websites “safe” or “not recommended” under its Pharmacy Verified Website Program. A third-party website screening is not a substitute for confirming licensure with the relevant regulator.
Warning signs before you order
- No prescription required: A seller offering prescription-only medicine without a prescription is a significant warning sign.
- No verifiable contact or professional support: Look for a physical U.S. address, a telephone number, and a licensed pharmacist available to answer questions.
- Unusually low prices or unsolicited offers: FDA and the World Health Organization identify suspiciously low prices and spam or unusual sales approaches as reasons for caution.
- Claims that replace verification: A professional-looking website, verification logo, or certificate does not by itself establish that the pharmacy is licensed. WHO advises checking whether a verification logo or certificate is authentic.
FDA’s online pharmacy safety guidance describes legitimate U.S. pharmacies as requiring a doctor’s prescription, providing a physical address and telephone number in the U.S., having a licensed pharmacist on staff, and being licensed with a state board of pharmacy.
What to inspect when the medicine arrives
- Confirm that the medicine and dosage are what you ordered.
- Look for damaged or broken packaging, misspellings, or an unexpected language.
- Check expiry and manufacturing dates, and whether seals are intact.
- Compare batch and expiry details on the inner and outer packaging.
- Notice an unusual appearance, discoloration, degradation, smell, or an unexpected reaction.
These checks can reveal reasons to stop and seek advice; they are not a home test for authenticity. The WHO notes that “some falsified medical products are almost visually identical to the genuine product and very difficult to detect.” A normal-looking package therefore cannot prove that its contents are genuine.
What to do if something seems wrong
- Do not rely on appearance to decide it is safe. If packaging, the medicine, or its effects concern you, contact a pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare professional for advice.
- Report suspected falsification. Contact your national medicines regulator using the appropriate reporting route for your country.
- Get prompt medical help for a serious or unexpected reaction. Use the applicable adverse-event reporting route as well.
Use the right register for your country
Pharmacy registers and licensing requirements vary by jurisdiction, and rules may apply where the pharmacy operates as well as where the patient lives. The state-board lookup steps above are U.S.-specific. If you are elsewhere, use your national medicines regulator or official pharmacy register rather than assuming a U.S. license or a seller’s claim in another country resolves the question.

For example, in the United Kingdom, GOV.UK provides an MHRA service to check whether a website is on the regulator’s “Not Recommended” list. That is a screening resource, not positive proof that a seller—or an individual medicine—is genuine.
