It does not remove ETH from protocol supply or change Ethereum’s issuance and fee-burning rules. If the company later sells or withdraws ETH, some of that liquidity may return to the market. The size and direction of any price effect are not established by the company disclosures discussed here.
First, separate ETH supply from ETH available to trade
“Supply” can mean different things in an Ethereum treasury discussion. Ethereum.org explains that protocol-level net supply changes through validator issuance and the burning of transaction fees. Under EIP-1559, the base fee is burned; a separate priority fee may go to the block producer. Net supply can therefore expand or contract depending on issuance compared with burning, which varies with network activity. A company’s decision to hold ETH does not change those protocol rules. Ethereum.org’s supply overview and EIP-1559 describe these mechanics.
- Protocol supply: ETH issued to validators minus ETH burned, alongside other protocol-level balance changes.
- Market availability: ETH that owners choose to retain, stake, lend, wrap, or sell. Holding or deploying ETH may affect liquidity without destroying the asset.
- Price: the market’s response to actual and expected demand and supply, trading liquidity, execution, and wider conditions.
So “held by a company,” “staked,” “out of circulation,” and “burned” are not interchangeable. Staking may involve activation and exit timing; liquid-staking tokens can be transferable claims whose market prices differ from protocol redemption measures. Lending and DeFi use add their own liquidity, smart-contract, and counterparty risks. SharpLink’s 2026 SEC filing describes these distinctions for its holdings.
How a corporate treasury can affect ETH demand and liquidity
Buying creates demand, but not new ETH
A treasury purchase uses ETH already held by someone else; it is an ownership transfer, not protocol issuance. The purchase can create demand, while the immediate effect on tradable availability depends on how the company executes it and how sellers respond. ETHZilla said it could spread purchases over several days or weeks, a strategy that may distribute execution over time; its filing does not establish the market impact of doing so. ETHZilla’s 2025 quarterly filing describes its purchase plans.

Holding or staking can reduce immediately available float
ETH retained in a treasury is not necessarily offered for sale. Staking can further constrain when native ETH is available because of protocol activation and exit mechanics. Liquid staking may instead create a transferable token representing a claim, but that token is not the same as native ETH in every respect and can trade at a different price from its redemption measure. A treasury balance therefore does not translate one-for-one into ETH permanently removed from trading.
Rewards and other inflows can grow a treasury without purchases
ETH-denominated staking rewards are a separate flow from buying. SharpLink’s 2026 annual report says its holdings came from purchases, investor receipts, and ETH rewards. As of March 6, 2026, the company reported 604,618 native ETH, 208,893 ETH-equivalent LsETH, and 55,188 ETH-equivalent WeETH—about 868,699 ETH on an as-if-redeemed or as-if-converted basis. These are company-reported, date-specific figures, not a market-wide estimate. SharpLink also reported $24,182 in native staking reward revenue for 2025; that is the reported dollar value of revenue, not the quantity of ETH earned or a general staking-yield statistic. The filing cautions that LsETH’s protocol conversion rate is a redemption measure, not its market trading price, and that redemption timing is affected by validator exit queues. Selling or withdrawing can return ETH to the market
A treasury may sell ETH to fund operating needs or change its strategy. The Ethereum Foundation’s treasury policy, for example, uses an operating-expense buffer to inform potential sales and describes periodic reassessment; it also lists solo staking and wETH lending among its deployment strategies. The policy targets a 15% annual operating-expense assumption and a 2.5-year operating buffer—figures specific to the Foundation, not general corporate treasury benchmarks. The Ethereum Foundation published its policy on June 4, 2025.
ETHZilla’s 2025 filing says it would use a market sale process if it decided to liquidate ETH. Those disclosures illustrate that sale decisions and execution approaches differ; neither establishes how much ETH will actually be sold or the price effect of a sale.

Why a treasury’s price impact cannot be read from its balance
A large disclosed balance may attract attention and change expectations, but a balance is not the same as a market order. Price response depends on the scale and timing of net flows, market depth, execution, investor expectations, funding, broader risk appetite, and network demand. Equity or debt raised to buy ETH can also affect the company’s capital structure; it is not itself a direct measure of ETH demand or an ETH price outcome.
The filings and protocol sources cited here explain mechanics and company strategies, but they do not isolate corporate treasury activity as the cause of a particular ETH price move or quantify a market-wide price impact. Accumulation headlines alone therefore do not establish a guaranteed “supply shock” or price target.

What company disclosures can—and cannot—tell you
When comparing treasury announcements, check what the reported number actually represents. A company may report native ETH, liquid-staking tokens in ETH-equivalent terms, or a converted value; these are not automatically comparable. Look for the measurement date, funding source, staking and custody arrangements, encumbrances, sale policy, and whether the figure includes investor contributions or rewards as well as purchases.
Strategy descriptions are not proof of future results. ETHZilla’s filing discusses staking, restaking, liquid staking, and DeFi deployment, while SharpLink’s filing describes validator delegation and liquid staking. Another company filing identifies staking economics, custody and security costs, regulatory context, liquidity, ETH market conditions, and access to capital markets as factors affecting treasury decisions. These considerations help explain why a company’s ETH holdings may rise, remain stable, or fall even when it describes a long-term strategy. The filing discusses factors affecting treasury decisions.
