It is not a card payment, and there is no universal card fee or timing that can be compared with every transfer. For a specific payment, check the fees charged by your provider and whether the recipient or merchant accepts the method.
How SEPA Instant and card payments differ
SEPA Instant moves money directly from one payment account to another as a euro credit transfer. A card payment uses a card-based payment instrument and follows a separate set of rules. The distinction matters: an account that can receive an instant transfer is not the same thing as a merchant that accepts a particular card.
The EU’s SEPA framework and its instant payments regulation address euro credit transfers. Card payments are governed separately; the European Commission’s payment services overview explains the wider payment-services framework.
Is SEPA Instant faster than paying by card?
For covered instant credit transfers, the receiving provider must make the funds available and confirm completion within 10 seconds of receiving the payment order. The service operates around the clock, including weekends and public holidays. If the payer’s provider does not receive confirmation of completion within that period, it must restore the payer’s account. This is the rule for covered instant transfers, not a promise that every attempted payment will succeed; a transfer can be rejected or otherwise fail. See Regulation (EU) 2024/886.

There is no single card-payment timing that applies to every card, transaction type, country, or payment stage. Authorization, clearing, and settlement are distinct steps, so a precise comparison requires a named transaction and a defined stage. The available EU sources do not establish that cards are universally slower or faster than SEPA Instant.
Does SEPA Instant cost more than a regular bank transfer?
Under the fee-parity rule, a provider may not charge more for sending or receiving an instant credit transfer than it charges for the corresponding type of standard credit transfer. The comparison is with the same provider’s matching standard transfer; it is not a promise that the instant transfer is free. Charges may depend on whether the payer or payee is charged, whether the account is for a consumer or business, and how the payment is initiated. The rule appears in Regulation (EU) 2024/886.

The obligation took effect on a phased schedule. For providers in euro-area member states, fee parity applied from 9 January 2025. Non-euro-area member states have later deadlines; the main deadline for relevant receiving and fee obligations is 9 January 2027, with sending obligations and some provider types subject to separate dates. The ECB’s overview of the Instant Payments Regulation sets out the phased scope and timing.
What does a card payment cost compared with an instant transfer?
There is no universal price comparison. A card’s interchange fee is one component of card payments, not necessarily the full amount a merchant pays to accept a card and not automatically a fee charged to the cardholder. The rules on cross-border payments and interchange fees in Regulation (EU) 2021/1230 do not create one universal consumer charge or merchant service fee.

For an exact comparison, check the charge for the specific payment on both sides: your provider’s fee for the relevant instant or standard transfer, any card fee that applies to your product or transaction, and any merchant acceptance charge that applies under its contract. The provider, market, card product, and merchant terms can all matter; a broad claim that one method always costs less is not supported.

No. EU rules require covered providers that offer standard euro credit transfers to offer instant transfers on a phased schedule, but they do not require every business that accepts cards to accept bank transfers. A recipient must be reachable for the transfer, while card acceptance depends on the merchant, card network, product, and payment channel.

Euro-area providers were required to receive instant transfers from 9 January 2025 and send them from 9 October 2025. Providers in non-euro-area member states and certain provider types follow later schedules. The European Commission’s 10 October 2025 explanation of the new rules describes the euro-area sending requirement and broader rollout. Check your provider and the intended recipient or merchant before relying on either method.

What to check before choosing
- For a person-to-person transfer: compare the instant-transfer charge with your provider’s charge for the corresponding standard transfer, and confirm the recipient can receive the payment.
- For a purchase: first confirm which methods the merchant accepts, then check any applicable card or transfer fees for that transaction.
- Before authorizing an instant transfer: use the free verification-of-payee service where available. The regulation requires this check before authorization; it compares details used to identify the payee and can flag a mismatch. It does not establish that the recipient is trustworthy or make a transfer fraud-proof. See the regulation’s verification-of-payee provisions.
