How can I save gas on my commute?
Track a normal week before changing your routine
For one ordinary week, record commute and delivery miles, gallons purchased and fuel spending. Separate required trips from optional or overlapping ones. That gives you a practical baseline and helps reveal whether the pressure comes mainly from a long commute, repeated errands or work-related driving.
Cut avoidable miles first
- Combine nearby errands into one outing instead of making separate trips.
- Ask whether occasional work-from-home days are possible for your job.
- Use transit, carpooling, walking, biking or ride sharing when the route and schedule make them practical.

Compare the full cost of alternatives
For your actual route, weigh out-of-pocket cost, travel time, reliability, schedule fit and accessibility. A carpool can share fuel expenses, but only if routes and schedules line up. Transit can reduce driving costs, but service and fares depend on where you live. Walking or biking may fit short trips and suitable routes. If an option requires another vehicle, include its purchase and upkeep costs rather than comparing fuel alone.

How can I cut delivery costs when gas prices go up?
First distinguish deliveries you need for work or household errands from separate trips you could consolidate. When practical, combine stops on a route, group errands, or arrange home deliveries to avoid extra driving. Compare the cost and timing of delivery with the cost of making the trip yourself; the result depends on the delivery charge, route and your vehicle’s use. The EPA also recommends optimizing home deliveries as one way to reduce vehicle use.
Can driving habits and maintenance help?
The EPA advises drivers to accelerate and brake gently, get regular tune-ups, follow the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and use the recommended motor oil. These are sensible operating and maintenance practices, not a guarantee of a particular reduction in fuel spending. Avoid assuming that an unapproved additive or a particular product will pay for itself.

What do national gasoline forecasts mean for my budget?
National data can provide context, but it is not a quote for your local pump. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported U.S. motor gasoline consumption of 8.9 million barrels per day in 2025, 1% below 2024 and 4% below 2019. Its April 2026 outlook forecast the U.S. retail gasoline price average to be 6% lower in 2026 and 1% higher in 2027 than in the respective prior years. The outlook also expected regional differences, with the West Coast typically highest and the Gulf Coast lowest. These are dated national forecasts, not guarantees or a prediction of what you will pay locally. The EIA said national gasoline consumption fell in 2025 even as vehicle miles traveled rose, alongside improved average fleet fuel economy. That national pattern does not establish how much an individual driver can save.
Which workplace benefits should I ask about?
Ask your employer whether it offers transit passes, qualified commuter benefits, flexible work arrangements or carpool coordination. IRS Publication 15-B (2026) describes tax rules for qualified transportation fringe benefits, including transit passes, qualified parking and commuter highway vehicles. Does the IRS mileage rate pay for my commute?
No. An IRS optional mileage rate is not an automatic payment to anyone who drives, and ordinary travel between home and a regular workplace is generally nondeductible commuting, regardless of distance. Do not treat the business mileage rate as an offset for routine commuting costs.
The IRS revised optional rates in July 2026. For eligible business transportation expenses incurred on or after July 1, 2026, the rate is 76 cents per mile; for eligible medical or moving expenses, it is 23.5 cents per mile. Qualifying expenses incurred earlier use the applicable pre-July rates. These rates apply to specified tax or reimbursement uses, subject to the relevant rules—not ordinary commuting.
