Exploration results are not proof of an economically mineable deposit, and this due-diligence framework is not a valuation or recommendation.
What should I check before buying shares in a gold exploration company?
Begin with the issuer’s latest filings and the project’s technical report—not only a presentation or promotional summary. Confirm the documents’ dates, the project they cover, their authors, and the jurisdiction. A project’s evidence can change over time, so check the report’s effective date and whether later filings describe material developments.
- Identify what has been established. Separate reported exploration results from a mineral resource, a mineral reserve, and a preliminary economic assessment. These describe different levels or types of evidence and are not interchangeable.
- Read qualifications alongside headline claims. Look for the report’s assumptions, limitations, effective date, and discussion of uncertainty. Distinguish a defined result from a target, interpretation, historical estimate, or study assumption.
- Trace control of the property. Check mineral and surface rights, royalties, options, leases, third-party interests, and any required consents.
- Map approvals and local dependencies. Establish what work is permitted now, what requires further approval, what environmental baseline work has been done, and how local and Indigenous communities are involved.
- Compare the work plan with the funding plan. Review available cash, obligations, planned program costs, financing assumptions, and securities that could increase the share count.
Repeat the review after a material filing or financing. To compare explorers, use like-for-like factors: evidence maturity and technical confidence; mineral and surface-rights control and royalty burden; jurisdiction, permitting, infrastructure, and community context; funding and possible dilution; and reliance on gold prices or future capital markets.
What does a mineral resource mean, and is it a reserve?
A mineral resource is not the same as a mineral reserve. Nor does a preliminary economic assessment establish that a project will become a mine. The distinctions matter because a headline grade or estimated quantity can sound more definitive than the underlying technical disclosure supports.

- COMPLETE GOLD PANNING KIT FOR ADULTS & BEGINNERS: Scoop paydirt with the 12" scoop, screen it through the 6" mini gold classifier, run it through the pocket sluice box, then finish in two patented spiral riffle gold pans. Everything for a first day on the creek, packed in one drawstring backpack.
- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- 35 LB RARE EARTH MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The HUNTLEY sweeper wand's 35 lb rare earth magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
For example, the March 2026 Moss Gold Project report stated that the project had no mineral reserves. It explained that inferred resources were too speculative for economic considerations that would categorize them as reserves, and cautioned that the preliminary assessment had no certainty of realization. Those statements apply to that project and report, not to every gold explorer.
When reviewing another company, use its own current technical report to determine which category, if any, applies and what caveats accompany it. Exploration results alone do not establish economic viability; that also depends on deposit characteristics, infrastructure, permitting, capital, commodity prices, and further technical work. Read the applicable issuer filings and technical disclosure, and check the report’s stated date and jurisdiction.

How do I know if a junior gold company actually owns its claims?
A project name or company presentation does not by itself show what rights the issuer controls or whether those rights are unencumbered. Read the issuer’s filings and technical report for the specific tenure and surface-rights arrangements, then check relevant regulator or government records for the project’s jurisdiction.
- Mineral tenure: Determine whether the company reports ownership, leases, options, or another form of interest, and identify any conditions or third-party interests.
- Surface access: Mineral rights and surface rights may differ. Check who controls surface access and whether additional agreements or permissions are needed to conduct planned work.
- Royalties and obligations: Identify royalty interests and other encumbrances that may affect project economics or the issuer’s control.
- Consent and status: Note any required third-party or government consents and verify the rights’ status under local rules.
The Moss Gold Project technical report, for example, describes tenure and surface rights spanning Crown and Inuit Owned Land, along with several royalty interests. It illustrates why project control needs to be checked in the underlying documents; it does not establish the rights or encumbrances of any other issuer.

Which permits and community conditions could affect the work plan?
Separate the work a company is authorized to do now from activities that depend on future approvals. Permit requirements vary by jurisdiction and activity, so a general statement that a project is “permitted” is not enough to establish that every planned stage can proceed.

- Exploration activities currently permitted, and the scope of those permissions.
- Pending approvals and additional permits anticipated for later stages.
- Environmental baseline work completed or still needed.
- Local and Indigenous community engagement or agreements described by the issuer.
- Unresolved environmental issues or required third-party and government consents.
The Moss report anticipates federal and provincial environmental assessment and a suite of permits for later project stages. Separately, an SEC-filed issuer disclosure warns that missing required approvals can curtail or prohibit planned activity. These are project-specific examples of why approvals should be checked against the actual work plan, not assumptions about explorers generally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I tell whether a gold explorer has enough cash?
There is no universal cash-runway threshold that can establish whether an early-stage explorer is adequately funded. Instead, compare the company’s reported cash and near-term obligations with the scope and expected cost of its next stated program, then examine how it expects to cover any gap.

- Work program: Identify the next planned activities and the cost assumptions the issuer discloses.
- Cash and obligations: Review reported cash, liabilities, and other near-term commitments in the latest filings.
- Financing history and assumptions: Check how past programs were funded and whether management says future work depends on raising capital.
- Potential dilution: Review warrants and other securities that could expand the share count, as well as the terms and effects of any new financing.
SEC-filed issuer disclosures describe uncertainty about access to capital and warn that equity financing may substantially dilute existing shareholders. Those risk disclosures do not establish a standard runway measure or guarantee that any company can raise the money it needs.
How should I weigh exploration risk?
Exploration is speculative: a promising result does not by itself demonstrate an economically mineable deposit. A project must still be evaluated against its deposit characteristics, infrastructure, permitting, capital requirements, commodity-price exposure, and the further technical work needed to establish viability. Early-stage shares can be volatile and may lose value; financing may also be uncertain.
Use the issuer’s filings and technical report to assess the specific project, rather than transferring a result or conclusion from another company’s report. For an investment decision, verify current facts in the issuer’s latest filings and applicable regulator records, and interpret them under the rules of the relevant jurisdiction.
