The Associated Press reported more than 3,500 U.S. cancellations as of Sunday afternoon, then more than 5,000 flights in and out of the United States canceled for Monday; a later AP snapshot put Monday’s cancellations above 5,600. These are dated counts, not one final tally, and a separate Reuters figure of more than 8,000 on Monday combined cancellations and delays.
How many flights were canceled?
There is no single consolidated final total established by the cited reports. FlightAware figures published at different times used different date windows and, in Reuters’ case, counted delays as well as cancellations.
| Report and snapshot | Measure |
|---|---|
| Associated Press, Sunday afternoon, February 22, 2026, citing FlightAware | More than 3,500 flights canceled across the United States. Associated Press |
| Associated Press, reporting on Monday, February 23, 2026, citing FlightAware | More than 5,000 flights in and out of the United States canceled for Monday, with most cancellations in New York, New Jersey, and Boston. Associated Press |
| Associated Press, later Monday report, citing FlightAware | More than 5,600 U.S. flights canceled on Monday; the report also noted other disruptions contributing to the difficult travel day. Associated Press |
| Reuters, Monday, February 23, 2026, citing FlightAware | More than 8,000 U.S. flight cancellations and delays combined—not cancellations alone. Reuters via Investing.com |
The AP’s Monday figures are different snapshots, while Reuters’ combined figure has a broader measure. They should not be added together or treated as directly interchangeable.
Which airports and routes were affected?
The FAA’s February 23 operations plan recorded network disruptions in Philadelphia, Newark, the New York-area traffic facility, and Boston. It identified snow, low ceilings, reduced visibility, and wind as constraints at Boston, Philadelphia, and the New York-area facility. The plan anticipated that ground stops or delay programs might be needed at several airports; it does not establish that every planned measure actually took place. FAA operations plan

What should travelers do during a similar storm?
- Check the operating airline’s app or website before leaving for the airport. Delta’s contemporaneous advice was to use its app or website for current flight status; check the airline operating your flight for its latest information. Delta update
- Look for available rebooking options if your flight is canceled or substantially disrupted. Delta and American described rebooking flexibility during the February 2026 event. Check the terms and options shown by your airline for your specific booking. Delta American Airlines
- Recheck status as conditions change. Resumption times varied by carrier and airport, and a restart announcement does not by itself confirm that an individual flight is operating.
The airlines’ February 2026 waivers and rebooking windows were temporary event measures and have expired; they are not current offers or standing travel policies.
