Amazon Saver is Amazon’s budget-focused private-label grocery brand, launched in September 2024. Its debut came amid grocery price competition with Walmart and Target, but the launch announcement does not show that Saver is cheaper than either retailer today. The key launch offers—most items under $5 and an extra 10% off for Prime members—were claims about the initial rollout, not a current price list or standing guarantee.
What Amazon Saver is—and what has changed since launch
Amazon introduced Saver on September 10, 2024, as a no-frills grocery label for shoppers looking to stretch their food budgets. Amazon said the selection would start with several products and grow to more than 100 items. Those figures describe the planned launch assortment, not a verified count of products currently available. Amazon’s 2024 announcement also said most Saver items cost under $5 and Prime members could receive an additional 10% off. Shoppers should check current listings for item prices, availability, and any discount rather than assume those launch terms still apply.
Amazon added a broader Amazon Grocery line in October 2025, bringing together customer favorites from Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly. In that announcement, the company continued to describe Saver as the budget-friendly tier of its private-label grocery lineup. Amazon’s Amazon Grocery announcement and its grocery overview, updated May 12, 2026, place Saver within a portfolio that has since expanded.
How Saver fits Amazon’s grocery strategy
Amazon’s 2026 strategy update says the company will close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and convert some locations to Whole Foods Market. Amazon Fresh online grocery service continues in areas where it is available. Amazon said it is focusing investment on online grocery delivery and Whole Foods expansion because its Amazon-branded physical stores had not developed a sufficiently distinctive customer experience and economic model for large-scale expansion. Saver should therefore be understood as part of Amazon’s grocery brand and online offering—not as evidence of a continuing national rollout of Amazon Fresh stores. Does Amazon Saver beat Walmart or Target on price?
The launch belongs in the broader story of grocery price competition: Amazon announced Saver alongside expanded Fresh discounts, and GeekWire covered the launch against a backdrop of price cuts by Walmart and Target. That supports the competitive framing, but it does not establish that a Saver product is currently cheaper than a comparable Walmart or Target product. The cited coverage contains no current, independently measured, same-product price comparison. GeekWire’s launch coverage describes the context, not a present-day price verdict.
Useful alternatives to check include Walmart’s Great Value and Bettergoods labels and Target’s Good & Gather. Walmart launched Bettergoods in 2024 as a store-label food brand intended in part to appeal to younger shoppers; the Associated Press covered that launch and Walmart’s private-label positioning. The Associated Press report provides context for Walmart’s brand, but does not compare its prices with Saver. Target’s Good & Gather is another relevant store-brand option. Make a useful local comparison
Compare the same kind of product, not just the brand name. A low shelf price can reflect a smaller package, different ingredients, or a local promotion. For each item, check:
- Unit price: Compare the price per ounce, pound, or other relevant unit, accounting for package size.
- Product details: Check ingredients and specifications so the products are genuinely comparable.
- Local availability: Confirm the item is in stock and can be delivered or collected in your area.
- Added costs and discounts: Include delivery fees and any membership-linked offer that applies to your purchase.
Prices and stock can differ by location and change over time, so a comparison should use current listings for the shopper’s area. The available sources do not establish a universal Saver-versus-Walmart-or-Target ranking.

What the private-label trend says—and does not say about Saver
Private-label groceries are a substantial part of the U.S. market. Circana data reported by the Associated Press show that private brands accounted for nearly 26% of U.S. food and beverage units sold in 2023, up from 24.7% in 2022. In core pantry categories, private brands represented 36.6% of dollar share in 2023, compared with 36.2% in 2019. These are market-wide figures, not measurements of Amazon Saver. The AP report on Walmart’s brand launch cites the Circana statistics.
Amazon separately said customers bought 15% more of its private-brand products in 2024 than in 2023 across Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market, and Amazon Fresh. That is an Amazon-wide portfolio figure; it is not a Saver-specific sales, growth, or market-share result. Amazon’s October 2025 announcement reports the company’s figure.

What shoppers should verify before buying
Amazon Saver is a real grocery brand with a stated budget focus, but the launch announcement cannot answer what a particular item costs or whether it is available today. Before buying, check the current listing for the product, package size, price, stock, delivery area, and any Prime discount. Do not assume every Saver item is under $5 or that a launch-era discount remains active. The available sources also do not establish that Saver is cheaper or better quality than competing private labels.
