For payments, check that both parties can use the same token on the same network and that you can convert it where needed. For trading, compare liquidity, costs, and withdrawal support on the exact venue and chain. For on-chain cash, examine reserve reporting, your own redemption access, custody, and what could happen if the token loses its peg. A promise of redemption at one dollar is not the same as a guarantee that you can redeem directly—or sell for one dollar on your platform.
Start by separating four different risks
A stablecoin can be designed to track a currency without always trading at that value. Before choosing one, consider these as separate questions:
- Reserve and issuer risk: What assets does the issuer say back the token, and how does it report on them?
- Redemption access: Do you personally qualify to redeem with the issuer, and what account, identity, minimum, fee, or jurisdiction rules apply?
- Market risk: At what price can you actually buy or sell on your exchange, for your trade size?
- Custody and transfer risk: Who controls the wallet or account, and can you recover from a mistaken or restricted transfer?
These risks do not cancel one another out. A wallet gives you a way to manage keys; it does not guarantee the issuer’s solvency, a one-dollar market price, redemption access, or a reversible transfer.
Choose according to what you need the stablecoin to do
| Use | What to prioritize | What to verify before acting |
|---|---|---|
| Payments | Recipient compatibility, settlement currency, transfer cost, and a usable route to local money | That sender and recipient support the same token on the same network; the recipient can access or convert it |
| Trading | Order-book depth, spread, slippage, trading fees, and withdrawal options | Live conditions on the exact exchange, chain, and intended trade size |
| On-chain cash | Reserve disclosures, practical exit routes, custody, and direct redemption terms | Your eligibility to redeem, network support, and the consequences of a depeg or transfer error |
Also match the coin’s currency to the obligation it will fund. A dollar-pegged token can still expose someone with expenses in another currency to foreign-exchange movements.

For payments, confirm the whole route before sending
A token is useful for a payment only if it works for both endpoints. Check the recipient’s deposit instructions rather than relying on a ticker match: the same stablecoin may exist on multiple networks, and a receiving service may support only some of them. Confirm the network and address independently with the recipient, especially for a first transfer.
- Check the amount the recipient will receive after network fees and any conversion spread.
- Confirm the recipient can use the token or convert it through an available exchange, wallet, or off-ramp in their country.
- Consider whether the payment needs to settle in dollars or in the recipient’s local currency.
- Send a small test amount first when the route is unfamiliar and the recipient supports that approach.
Circle’s USDC Terms say that a transfer to a third-party address on a supported blockchain is irreversible once initiated; Circle cannot reverse or recall it. Treat an address or network error as potentially permanent, not as a routine payment dispute. Circle USDC Terms

For trading, judge the market you will actually use
A token’s overall size or prominence does not tell you whether you can trade it efficiently on your chosen exchange. Before placing an order, inspect the venue’s live spread and order book at a size similar to yours. A thin book can mean slippage: the average execution price may be worse than the displayed quote.
- Compare the buy and sell spread and the available depth near the price you expect.
- Include trading fees, deposit costs, withdrawal fees, and any conversion required to reach your next asset or bank account.
- Check which networks the exchange accepts for deposits and withdrawals, and whether withdrawals are currently available.
- Do not treat an exchange’s quoted price as equivalent to issuer redemption value; those are separate routes with different eligibility and costs.
There is no evidence here that establishes a universally best coin for trading: the answer depends on the venue, chain, location, and trade size. Check current venue-specific data immediately before trading.

For on-chain cash, compare disclosures and redemption terms
Read the issuer’s current reserve and legal pages, not only a short “backed” description. Pay attention to the kinds of assets counted as reserves, how often information is published, what assurance is provided, and whether the issuer describes custody or separation of those assets. Reporting and assurance can help you assess risk, but they do not guarantee that a token will stay at par or that you can obtain cash when you want it.

| USDC, Circle | Circle says reserves are highly liquid fiat reserves held separately from its operating funds for holders’ benefit. It reports reserve holdings weekly and monthly assurance by a Big Four accounting firm. Circle reported $75.2 billion in USDC circulation and $75.5 billion in total reserves as of September 24, 2026; these are dated issuer-reported balances. Circle transparency | Direct Circle Mint access is for institutions, not individuals or small businesses. Circle’s terms condition access on an eligible Circle Mint account and compliance. | USD₮ (USDT), Tether | Tether’s terms define reserves to include cash, cash equivalents, and other assets that may include loan receivables, including from affiliates. Its FAQ says it typically publishes circulation information daily and reserve information quarterly. Tether legal terms · Tether FAQ | Tether says direct purchases and redemptions require verified-customer status and can involve minimums and fees. Its FAQ lists a non-refundable 150 USD₮ verification fee, which may count toward future redemptions. Check current terms for your account and location. |
A Federal Reserve note published April 8, 2026, assessing issuer-attested disclosures, characterized USDT as having approximately 1.04 times reported reserves per token, with about 0.74 times in assets the note classified as higher-quality; it characterized USDC as having 1.0 times backing with higher-quality reserves. These are the note’s analysis of disclosed attestations, not a fresh Federal Reserve audit or a guarantee of redemption. Federal Reserve note

Network support is part of the asset choice, not a minor transfer detail. Circle listed native USDC on 38 networks as of September 16, 2026, but that does not mean every exchange, wallet, or recipient supports all of them. Network availability can also change over time. Tether’s legal terms say direct USD₮ redemption ceased on Omni, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand effective September 1, 2025. Do not infer current issuer service on a chain from an old wallet balance or a general statement that the token exists there; check current issuer and platform terms. Tether legal terms
Consider custody, access restrictions, and recovery
With a custodial exchange or wallet, a provider holds or controls the assets and may restrict account access under its terms. With self-custody, you manage the private keys and are responsible for backups, device security, and sending to the correct address. The Financial Stability Board includes private-key storage among the functions involved in stablecoin arrangements. Financial Stability Board report
A hardware wallet may help someone intentionally managing their own keys, but it does not reduce issuer or market risk. Decide how you will protect and recover access before transferring a meaningful balance; a lost key or mistaken irreversible transfer may not have a customer-support remedy.
Check local rules and access before relying on a token
Availability and redemption rights depend on jurisdiction, issuer terms, and the services a person can use. In the United States, 12 U.S.C. § 5903, in text effective September 26, 2026, requires payment stablecoin issuers to provide clear and conspicuous procedures for timely redemption of outstanding payment stablecoins. That statutory requirement is not a blanket approval of every token, issuer, exchange, wallet, or service, nor does it establish availability in other countries. 12 U.S.C. § 5903

Quick Recap
A final pre-transfer checklist
- Does the token match the currency and purpose of the payment, trade, or future expense?
- Can every endpoint accept the exact token on the exact network?
- Have you checked fees, spread, withdrawal limits, and the route back to spendable money?
- Do you understand the issuer’s reserve reporting and who is eligible for direct redemption?
- Are you comfortable with the custody arrangement, possible access restrictions, and irreversible transfer risk?
