An international remittance can be delayed at the sending provider, an intermediary, the receiving bank or payout agent, or during an additional review. A transfer marked “sent” is not necessarily credited to the recipient. Check the disclosed availability date, allow for cut-off times and holidays, then ask the sending provider to trace the payment if it is overdue.

Where a remittance can get delayed

Business days, holidays, and cut-off times

Providers and payment networks may not process transfers on the same schedule. If you submit a payment after the provider’s cut-off, or near a public holiday, processing may not resume until a working day. The relevant calendars can include both the sending and destination countries, and a corridor may have its own rules. DBS/POSB, for example, describes business-day processing in Singapore and destination-holiday effects; that guidance applies to its services, not every transfer. DBS/POSB’s transfer timing guidance.

Recipient details that do not match

A misspelled recipient name, incorrect account number or IBAN, or wrong bank identifier can prevent a receiving institution from crediting the funds. Depending on the provider and destination, the institution may request clarification or return the payment. Before sending, match the recipient’s full name and payment details to the receiving institution’s records. Check the destination currency and any required payment-purpose information for that corridor.

Intermediaries and receiving-bank processing

“Sent” may mean the sending provider released the payment, not that the beneficiary’s bank has posted it. A correspondent bank, payout partner, or receiving institution may still need to process it. Outages and scheduled maintenance can also interrupt processing. Emirates NBD says its international transfers usually take two to three working days to be credited; that is its provider-specific guidance, not an industry-wide guarantee or independent performance measure. Fraud, sanctions, or regulatory checks

Providers may review a transfer for anti-fraud, anti-money-laundering, sanctions, or other regulatory reasons. A provider may ask the sender for further information and may not be able to disclose every detail of a review. DBS/POSB notes that additional anti-fraud or anti-money-laundering checks may cause processing delays. DBS/POSB support guidance.

For transfers covered by U.S. Regulation E, CFPB commentary recognizes that a necessary investigation of potentially suspicious, blocked, or prohibited activity may delay availability in specified circumstances. The commentary distinguishes this from routine area-specific screening a provider knows about in time to include in its availability disclosure. It is not a blanket exception for every review or a rule for all countries. CFPB Official Staff Commentary on Regulation E, § 1005.33.

Exceptional events

U.S. regulatory commentary gives examples such as war, civil unrest, natural disasters, and unforeseen government restrictions when discussing certain exceptions. Those examples relate to the cited U.S. rule; they do not establish a universal legal standard. CFPB Official Staff Commentary on Regulation E, § 1005.33.

What to do when the money has not arrived

  1. Check the confirmation. Find the disclosed availability date, transaction reference, payout method, destination currency, and recipient details as entered. The date your account was debited is not necessarily the date the recipient was told to expect funds.
  2. Account for processing calendars. Check the sending provider’s cut-off time and the relevant business-day and holiday calendars. Published delivery estimates depend on the provider and corridor; do not treat one provider’s timing as a general standard.
  3. Ask the sending provider to trace the transfer. Give it the transaction reference and ask whether the payment is pending, returned, held for information, or delivered to the receiving institution. Ask whether the sender needs to provide anything. Do not send another transfer until the original’s status is clear.
  4. Confirm the recipient details with the receiving bank. Verify the account-holder name, account number or IBAN, bank routing or SWIFT/BIC identifier, and any local requirements. If the bank cannot find a payment that the sender’s provider says it sent, ask the provider for its payment confirmation or SWIFT copy and ask the bank to search using that document.
  5. Respond safely to document requests. If the provider requests information, use its verified app, website, or contact channel and provide only the requested documents. Do not send identity documents to an unverified contact or guess why a review is taking place.
  6. Escalate if the disclosed date has passed. Tell the provider the availability date, amount, reference, recipient, and what the institutions have told you. Ask how to file a formal complaint or notice of error in your jurisdiction, and keep the provider’s responses.

What “sent,” “pending,” “returned,” and “delivered” mean for your next step

  • Pending or held for information: Ask the sending provider what action, if any, it needs from the sender and how to submit it securely.
  • Sent or delivered to the receiving institution, but not credited: Ask the provider for payment confirmation or a SWIFT copy, then ask the recipient’s bank to locate the incoming payment. Emirates NBD recommends sharing an e-advise or SWIFT payment copy with the recipient bank if it cannot credit the transfer; this may help the bank investigate but is not a guaranteed fix. Emirates NBD international-transfer guidance.
  • Returned: Ask the sending provider why it was returned, whether it has received the funds back, and what correction or next step it requires before you resend.
  • Status unclear: Ask the sender’s provider to identify the transfer’s current stage before taking action. A status request is useful even if it is not itself a formal error claim.

U.S. protections for certain overdue remittances

For a remittance transfer covered by U.S. Regulation E, failure to make funds available by the date disclosed to the sender can qualify as an error, subject to exceptions. These include certain unforeseeable extraordinary circumstances, necessary investigations, fraudulent intent, and specified cases involving an incorrect sender-provided account number or recipient-institution identifier when additional conditions are met. The rule is U.S.-specific; protections and deadlines elsewhere may differ. 12 CFR § 1005.33.

Under that rule, a qualifying notice of error generally must reach the provider no later than 180 days after the disclosed availability date. It must identify the sender, recipient, and transfer, and explain the suspected error. The provider generally has 90 days to investigate and determine whether an error occurred, and must report its results within three business days after completing the investigation. Remedies depend on the type and cause of the error. These are deadlines under the cited U.S. rule, not general international-transfer deadlines. 12 CFR § 1005.33.

A request for a status update is not generally an “error” under the rule, except when funds were not made available by the disclosed date. You can still contact the provider to trace a transfer while deciding whether the formal notice procedure applies.

How to compare transfer services before sending

When choosing between providers, compare the details that determine what happens if a transfer is late, rather than relying on a broad speed claim:

  • The disclosed availability date and delivery method for your specific destination.
  • Sending and receiving cut-off times, business days, and holiday calendars.
  • The recipient identifiers and any corridor-specific information required.
  • How the provider reports status and supplies trace documents or payment confirmations.
  • The complaint and error-resolution process that applies in your jurisdiction.

Provider examples and estimates are service-specific; the cited guidance does not establish a general ranking of providers by speed or reliability.
