If SEBI takes action against an investment scheme you used, first find and read the exact SEBI order or public notice. It tells you who is named, what SEBI has directed, and whether investors must make a claim or act by a deadline. Do not assume the action guarantees a refund: repayment depends on the directions in that case or another applicable legal process.
1. Verify the SEBI action and identify what it requires
Search SEBI’s official public-notice listings using the scheme and operator names. Open the original order or notice, rather than relying on a forwarded screenshot, search excerpt, or social-media summary.
Read the operative directions and note:
- The date of the document and the legal entities or people it names.
- What SEBI has directed, and whether the action is interim or final.
- Whether investors are told to submit a form, register, provide proof of claim, or contact a named authority or other entity.
- Any stated deadline and the method for submitting documents.
SEBI’s notices are matter-specific; a notice about one scheme does not establish the remedy, deadline, or refund amount for another. Follow the directions in the document for your case.
2. Preserve evidence of your investment
Create a dated file with the documents showing both your relationship to the scheme and the money you paid. Keep originals where possible, and make an indexed copy for any submission.

- Application, agreement, contract, or account-opening documents.

- Account statements or records showing your investment and any payments received.

- Copies of the SEBI order or notice, plus any earlier complaint and response.
SEBI’s SCORES guidance says incomplete or unspecified complaints, and allegations without supporting documents, are not treated as complaints.
3. Follow the case-specific claim process
Check the order or notice for the exact process investors must use. If it names a form, administrator, court, authority, or other contact, follow that route and its stated deadline. Keep proof of submission and copies of everything you send.
Rank #2
A general complaint through SCORES should not be treated as a substitute for a separate claim process required by the notice. Nor does SEBI action alone trigger an automatic payout. The applicable repayment process, if any, must come from the specific order, notice, or another legal process.
4. Use SCORES for an eligible securities-market grievance
Approach the company or intermediary first
For a grievance involving a listed company or SEBI-registered intermediary, SEBI Investor says to first approach that company or intermediary. If the matter remains unresolved, SCORES can facilitate an eligible securities-market complaint and let you track its status. SCORES describes itself as a facilitation platform, not a general adjudicator for every dispute over money.

Check eligibility and filing limits
Before filing, consult the live SCORES FAQ and portal instructions. The published FAQ states a one-year filing period from the cause of action. It also identifies exclusions, including matters outside securities-market jurisdiction, anonymous or unsupported submissions, certain matters pending in court or insolvency, and market-intelligence reports. The complaint must meet the platform’s entity and documentation requirements.
Watch the portal for response and review deadlines
Current SCORES 2.0 material describes a 21-day period for the entity to submit an Action Taken Report. If you are dissatisfied with that report, request a first-level review within 15 days; if you remain dissatisfied after the designated body’s Action Taken Report, request a second-level review within 15 days. Use the live portal to confirm the applicable instructions and track deadlines. A SEBI Investor page retains a different, 30-day response statement, so do not rely on that older page instead of current SCORES 2.0 instructions.

5. Choose the route that matches the issue
The right channel depends on who regulates the entity and whether you need an individual grievance handled, want to report suspected misconduct, or must make a claim under a specific case process.
| What you need to do | Route to check |
|---|---|
| Complain about an eligible securities-market matter involving a covered company or intermediary | Approach the company or intermediary first; if unresolved, check SCORES eligibility and file through the portal. |
| Submit a claim required by a particular SEBI order or notice | Use the process, contact, and deadline stated in that document. |
| Report suspected securities-law misconduct rather than seek individual grievance redressal | Check SEBI’s market-intelligence reporting route. |
| Raise an issue outside SEBI’s remit | Identify the responsible regulator or authority. SEBI Investor lists bodies including RBI, IRDAI, PFRDA, and MCA for matters within their respective jurisdictions. |
| Seek dispute resolution for an eligible securities-market dispute | Review SEBI Investor’s Smart ODR information. Arbitration stages may involve costs, which depend on the claim and ODR institution. |
SEBI Investor’s support information can help identify the relevant authority. A complaint platform, misconduct-reporting channel, dispute-resolution process, and case-specific repayment mechanism serve different purposes; using one does not necessarily replace another.

6. Avoid losing more money to recovery promises
Be wary of anyone promising an assured return or guaranteed recovery in exchange for a fee. SEBI warns about assured-return practices and recommends taking investment advice only from entities registered under its Investment Adviser Regulations. Verify an adviser through official SEBI resources before relying on advice or paying them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will SEBI get my money back?
Not automatically. A refund or repayment depends on the directions in the specific order or notice, or another applicable legal process.
How do I claim a refund after SEBI action?
Read the order or public notice for any investor-specific form, contact, proof-of-claim requirement, and deadline. There is no universal refund process established by SEBI action alone.
