The exchange rate on a money transfer determines how much destination currency your family receives for each unit of money you send. A transfer with a low—or zero—advertised fee can still deliver less if its exchange rate is less favorable. Compare the final amount due to your recipient, not the fee alone, using the same send amount, destination, payment method, payout method, and timing.
How the exchange rate changes the amount received
A remittance provider converts the money you send into the recipient’s currency at an applied exchange rate. If the rate is quoted as units of destination currency for each unit of your currency, multiply your send amount by that rate to find the converted amount before fees or deductions.
For example, in a hypothetical transfer of 100 units of currency A, a rate of 150 units of currency B per unit of A converts to 15,000 units of B before fees. At a rate of 145, the same 100 units converts to 14,500 units. The example illustrates the arithmetic only; it is not a current provider quote.
A fee charged to you or deducted from the payout can reduce the amount further. The exchange rate and fees therefore both matter to the final amount.

Why the advertised fee does not show the full cost
A provider’s rate may differ from a market reference rate. The World Bank describes the difference between the market reference rate and the rate actually applied as the exchange-rate margin. Its measure of total remittance cost includes both the transfer fee and this margin. That is why a low or zero transfer fee does not, by itself, establish that a transfer is inexpensive.
The World Bank’s Q3 2025 report collected remittance costs in these two components: transfer fee and foreign-exchange margin. In its defined comparison, credit or debit card was the cheapest funding method at 4.39% in that quarter, based on 2,992 recorded services. This is a report-specific comparison, not a guarantee that a card is cheapest for every corridor or individual transfer.

What dated corridor averages can—and cannot—tell you
World Bank corridor pages report snapshots, not live quotes. The following figures are specific to the United States-to-destination corridors and collection periods shown; they should not be treated as current prices or predictions for another transfer.
| Corridor and period | Reported total cost | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| United States to India, Q3 2025; data collected August 4–28, 2025 | 3.68% for a $200 send ($7.35); 2.45% for a $500 send ($12.26) | World Bank corridor-page averages for those send amounts. View the corridor page. |
| United States to Egypt, Q3 2025; data collected August 20, 2025 | 5.36% for a $200 send ($10.71) | A separate corridor observation; do not treat it as a directly equivalent comparison with another corridor unless the transaction assumptions and methodology match. View the corridor page. |
| United States to Jamaica, Q3 2025 | 4.29% average | The cited page does not establish a consistent transaction-specific dollar cost from this percentage alone. Provider examples on the page vary in fees and exchange-rate margins. View the corridor page. |
These averages can provide context for the listed corridors and period, but they cannot tell you what a provider will quote for your own transaction. The World Bank’s methodology also cautions that actual costs may be higher than shown when exchange-rate information is unavailable or a remittance is paid in dollars. See the World Bank methodology.

How to compare transfer offers fairly
Get quotes using the same transaction details, then compare what the recipient is promised—not just what you pay to send.
- Enter the same sending amount and destination with each provider. Confirm the service is available for your sender-to-recipient corridor.
- Use the same funding method, such as bank transfer or card, and the same payout method, such as cash pickup or deposit, when comparing quotes.
- Record the exact exchange rate, sender fee, and final amount the recipient will receive, including the currency.
- Check whether a receiving-side charge or other deduction could reduce the payout. Ask when the quoted rate is locked and whether it can change before the transfer is executed.
- Compare transfer speed as well as cost, so you are comparing services that meet your timing needs.
- If the provider gives enough information, compare its applied rate with a stated market reference rate to understand the margin.
Rates and fees can vary with the corridor, amount, and service setup, so a quote for one route or payment arrangement does not establish the cost of another. The World Bank notes that its database may not show all actual costs when a transfer is paid in dollars or exchange-rate information is unavailable.

Before completing a transfer, make sure you can see the rate applied and the final amount due to your recipient. Keep the transaction confirmation so you and your family can check the agreed details if there is a discrepancy. It also recommends confirming the beneficiary’s final amount in the requested currency, which gives the recipient a clear amount to expect and collect. Read the World Bank guidance.
