The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) reported that refinances made up 38.3% of mortgage applications for the survey week ending September 25, 2026, down from 39.3% the previous week. The assigned 37.0% figure for the week ending October 2 could not be verified against an official MBA release located for this update, so it should not be treated as confirmed.

What share of mortgage applications were refinances?

For the week ending September 25, 2026, refinances accounted for 38.3% of total mortgage applications in MBA’s weekly survey. The figure is a share of applications submitted during that survey week—not a count or share of refinances that were approved, completed, or funded. MBA’s September 30 release gives the figure and its comparison with the prior week.

Did the share fall from the previous week?

Yes. MBA reported 38.3% for the week ending September 25, compared with 39.3% for the preceding survey week: a decrease of 1.0 percentage point. That is a change in the proportion of applications, not the same measure as the Refinance Index’s week-over-week change.

What about the week ending October 2?

The stated 37.0% figure for the week ending October 2, 2026, was not confirmed in the official MBA material located for this update. MBA’s newsroom search listing showed the September 30 release as the latest weekly survey release, but that does not establish whether a later release existed or was not yet indexed. Until an October 2 survey release confirms it, 37.0% should be treated as unverified—not as a verified MBA result.

Because the October 2 figure is unverified here, a week-over-week change from 38.3% cannot be reported as an established comparison. The release date and survey-week end date are also different: MBA’s September 30 release reported data for the week ending September 25.

How to read MBA’s other figures for September 25

MBA reported that the seasonally adjusted Market Composite Index, its measure of total mortgage application volume, fell 6.0% from the previous week. The Refinance Index fell 9% week over week and was 56% lower than in the same week a year earlier. Those are index changes, not percentage-point movements in refinance share. The seasonally adjusted Purchase Index fell 4% week over week.

The same release reported an average 30-year fixed mortgage rate of 7.3%, which MBA described as the highest since November 2023. MBA Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist Joel Kan said: “Mortgage rates jumped to their highest level in almost three years, pushing borrowers to the sidelines.” That was MBA’s explanation of the September 25 week’s application decline; it does not establish why activity or the refinance share changed in the October 2 week.

Refinance share and Refinance Index are different measures

  • Refinance share: the percentage of all mortgage applications that are refinance applications.
  • Refinance Index: a measure of refinance application activity relative to the index’s reference level; its percentage change describes movement in that index, not the share of total applications.

A meaningful weekly comparison should use the same MBA survey series and identify each week-ending date. Report the refinance-share change in percentage points, and keep any Refinance Index change separate.
