What to Do If a Bitcoin Exchange Deposit or Withdrawal Is Delayed

Check the exchange status and transaction ID to distinguish a Bitcoin network delay from an exchange hold or processing issue, then follow the right support steps.

First, find out whether the delay is on the Bitcoin network or inside the exchange. Check the exchange’s transaction status, then use the transaction ID to see whether the transfer was broadcast and how many confirmations it has. If the exchange shows an internal hold, failure, or completed confirmation requirement without crediting the deposit, follow that exchange’s support instructions rather than sending the transfer again.

Network delay or exchange delay?

A Bitcoin transfer can be waiting for a block, accumulating confirmations, or awaiting processing or review by the exchange. Those are different problems and call for different next steps. Status names and confirmation requirements vary by platform, so use the exchange’s own definitions rather than assuming another exchange follows Kraken’s process.

What to check Network delay Exchange delay or review
Transaction ID A broadcast transaction usually has an ID you can inspect in a Bitcoin block explorer. If there is no ID, the sending wallet or service may not have broadcast it yet. The exchange may show a deposit or withdrawal awaiting internal processing even if the transaction is not yet on the blockchain.
Blockchain progress Check whether the transaction is included in a block and whether its confirmation count is increasing. If the transaction has enough confirmations for the exchange but the balance has not changed, the remaining delay may be on the exchange side.
Exchange status A status indicating confirmation or broadcast points to blockchain progress. An internal processing, hold, or failed status calls for the exchange’s stated instructions and, where appropriate, support.

Kraken defines a confirmation this way: “Once a transaction has been included in a mined block, the transaction has received one confirmation.” Kraken’s cryptocurrency deposit processing times guide says a Bitcoin block is mined on average every 15 minutes and gives approximately 45 minutes as an example of the time for Kraken’s three-confirmation BTC deposit requirement. Those are an average and a Kraken-specific example, not a guaranteed settlement time or a deadline for other exchanges; Kraken notes that an individual block can take 30 or 60 minutes.

If your Bitcoin deposit is delayed

  1. Open the exchange’s funding or transaction history. Find the deposit and read its exact status. If it is listed as confirming or processing, check whether the exchange has received the transaction and how many confirmations it requires. Kraken’s status guide illustrates how one exchange distinguishes deposit stages.
  2. Look up the transaction ID. If the sending wallet or service provides a transaction ID, enter it in a reputable Bitcoin block explorer. Check whether the transfer appears on-chain and whether its confirmation count is changing. If there is no transaction ID, ask the sending service whether it broadcast the transfer; do not keep creating transfers to compensate for the missing one.
  3. Verify the transfer details. Compare the asset, network, destination address, and any required memo or tag against the exchange’s deposit instructions. Check the exchange’s minimum deposit rules and maintenance notices. Kraken’s deposit troubleshooting guidance lists these kinds of checks; requirements are platform- and asset-specific.
  4. Contact the exchange if the stated requirement has been met without credit. If confirmations meet the exchange’s requirement but the balance is still missing, or there is no deposit record after the exchange’s stated window, use its official support channel. Provide the transaction ID and relevant transfer details.

Do not send a second deposit just because the first has not appeared. A duplicate transfer can create a second transaction without resolving the original problem.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

If your Bitcoin withdrawal is delayed

  1. Read the withdrawal status and any error message. A status that describes internal processing means the exchange may not have sent the transaction to Bitcoin yet. If it says the withdrawal was sent or broadcast, use the transaction ID to check blockchain progress. Kraken’s deposit processing guide and transaction-status guide show Kraken-specific distinctions; another exchange may use different labels.
  2. Check the destination and network in the withdrawal record. Make sure the recorded address and selected network match what you intended. If the transaction has been broadcast, do not assume it can be recalled; follow the exchange’s cancellation rules only while the withdrawal remains eligible for cancellation.
  3. Use support for a hold, failure, or unexplained processing delay. Ask the exchange what status or error applies and what action is required. Kraken says cancellation requests apply only to withdrawals marked Initiated or Pending, and that cancellation of a Pending withdrawal is not guaranteed. These rules are Kraken-specific; check your own platform’s guidance.

What an “On hold” status can mean

An exchange hold can reflect an account, funding-limit, password-change, or payment-method review rather than a Bitcoin confirmation delay. Check the exchange’s account notices and messages, then contact official support if the notice directs you to do so. Waiting for another block will not necessarily clear an internal review.

Kraken’s examples include a 72-hour hold after certain purchase types, a seven-day hold associated with some ACH Plaid cash deposits, and a withdrawal hold of up to 24 hours for new addresses after a password change. These are Kraken-specific conditions and may depend on the account circumstances; they are not standard hold periods across exchanges. See Kraken’s explanation of withdrawal holds for its guidance.

What to send official support

Use the exchange’s website or app to find its support channel. Include enough information to identify the transfer without exposing account credentials:

  • Transaction ID, if one exists
  • Asset and amount
  • Sending and destination addresses
  • Date and approximate time of the transfer
  • The exchange status and any error message
  • Screenshots of the relevant transaction details, with sensitive information redacted

Never share your password, seed phrase, or one-time authentication code with anyone claiming to be support. Do not pay a third party promising to unlock or accelerate funds. Kraken advises users to contact support when its troubleshooting checks do not resolve a missing crypto deposit or delayed transfer; see its deposit FAQ and transaction-status guidance.
