How to Verify Whether an Investment Adviser or Intermediary Is Registered With SEBI

Check a claimed SEBI registration in the official registry, then confirm the exact entity and contact channel before relying on an adviser or intermediary.

Check the provider in SEBI’s official Recognised Intermediaries registry, selecting the category that matches the service offered. Then compare the exact registered name and registration number, and independently confirm that the website, email, phone number or social account contacting you belongs to that entity. A name or registration number shown in an advertisement is not enough.

How to check a SEBI registration

  1. Open SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries registry. It lets you search intermediary records by name or registration number and browse separate categories. Choose the category that corresponds to the service being offered.
  2. Select Investment Adviser if the provider offers investment advice. Search using the exact name, trade name or registration number. The registry also has search fields for contact person, email and location.
  3. Compare the record with the provider’s claims. Check the registered name and registration number, then review the contact, address, contact-person and validity information shown. SEBI’s August 2025 Investment Adviser FAQ identifies the Recognised Intermediaries list as a place to check registration status and contact details: SEBI’s Investment Adviser FAQs. Individual records may not show every field.
  4. Verify the channel separately. Compare the website, email address, phone number and social account you are dealing with against the details in the record. If a detail is missing or does not match, contact the entity using independently verified information rather than the number or link in the message you received.
  5. Resolve any mismatch before relying on the claim. Recheck spelling, trade name, number and category. If you still cannot find an exact match, treat the claimed registration as unverified and consult SEBI Investor Support. SEBI’s instruction is to “Check Registration Status of Market Intermediary before investing.”

Choose the category that matches the service

SEBI’s registry separates different intermediary types, including Investment Advisers, stock brokers, portfolio managers and research analysts. A record in one category is not proof that the provider is registered for a different role. Verify the activity you are being offered, not just whether a similar business name appears somewhere in the directory.

What the registry can—and cannot—confirm

What a matching record establishes

A matching result is evidence that a record with those details appears in the selected SEBI directory. The fields shown vary by record; an example entry displays a name, registration number, email, address, contact person and validity period. That example is not evidence of another adviser’s current status: SEBI Investment Adviser registry example.

What it does not establish

A registry hit alone does not prove that the person who contacted you controls the listed entity’s website, phone number or social account, that a particular offer is genuine, or that an investment will perform well. In a 2026 enforcement order, SEBI described a social-media presence using a name similar to a registered entity and found that the channels were unrelated to that entity: SEBI’s order in the matter of Mr. Yash Garg, Proprietor of Yash Trading Academy.

Why checking registration matters

Section 12(1) of the SEBI Act, as reproduced in a SEBI order, says that specified securities-market intermediaries—including investment advisers and portfolio managers—may deal in securities only under and in accordance with a certificate of registration obtained from SEBI under the applicable regulations. The quoted provision is not a complete account of every exemption or regulatory condition: SEBI order reproducing section 12(1).

Check the live record, not an old screenshot

Registry entries and totals can change, so use the live listing when you make a decision. SEBI’s registry search reported 1,049 Investment Advisers with a list date of October 6, 2026; that is a dated snapshot, not a permanent count. For a current check, return to the live Recognised Intermediaries registry rather than relying on a saved screenshot, forwarded certificate or copied registration number.
