1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo check Bitcoin’s price performance, use a chart for a quick view of selected periods, then compare timestamped historical data from exchanges or market-data providers. Keep the BTC trading pair, quote currency, time window and price measure consistent. There is no single official Bitcoin price: an aggregate is a broad reference, while an exchange quote reflects a particular market.
Start with a chart for a quick view
Bitcoin.org’s price page offers 1D, 7D, 1M and 1Y chart periods. These let you inspect the broad movement over a selected interval, but the chart is an aggregated market price, not a promise that you can buy or sell at that rate. Bitcoin.org says its displayed values may be delayed and are for informational purposes, not financial advice.
Use the chart to get your bearings. For a detailed exchange-to-exchange comparison, use historical data from each exchange or provider and align the inputs described below.
Why Bitcoin prices differ between exchanges
Bitcoin trades on independent markets, each with its own buyers, sellers, liquidity and local currencies. As a result, quotes can vary between exchanges and data services; there is no single official global market price. Bitcoin.org explains this distinction and identifies CoinGecko as the provider for its chart, with Blockchain.com as an automatic fallback.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
An aggregate combines observations across markets into a reference figure. An exchange quote is specific to that exchange and trading pair. Neither should be mistaken for the other, and an aggregate should not be treated as an executable offer.
How to compare Bitcoin price performance fairly
- Choose the period. For a quick check, select one of the chart’s 1D, 7D, 1M or 1Y ranges. For a detailed comparison, define the exact start and end times you want to examine.
- Match the trading pair and quote currency. Compare the same pair, such as BTC/USD, on each source. The base asset is Bitcoin and the quote currency is the currency in which its price is expressed. BIP 171 uses XBT as a token for Bitcoin and USD as an example quote currency.
- Align timestamps. Use the same start and end timestamps for every data set. Historical records may use POSIX timestamps and be ordered chronologically, as described in BIP 171. Comparing different time boundaries can make otherwise similar price series look different.
- Check the price measure. Establish whether each figure is a last trade, high, low, average, typical rate or aggregate. BIP 171 describes several provider-supplied rate types; the label matters because these measures are not interchangeable.
- Compare the results in context. Note whether each series represents one exchange or a multi-market aggregate. Also check the provider’s update frequency, history coverage and any delay. BIP 171 describes metadata for interfaces implementing its proposal, but those details should not be assumed for every exchange or website.
Which source should you use?
| Source | Best suited to | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin.org price chart | A quick aggregated view across 1D, 7D, 1M and 1Y | It is an informational reference, may be delayed, and is not an exchange offer. Bitcoin.org attributes the data to CoinGecko and says Blockchain.com is the automatic fallback. Source. |
| Exchange market data | Performance for a specific trading pair on that exchange | Compare the same pair, quote currency, timestamps and rate type. Exchange APIs are one source of rate data described in the Bitcoin Developer Guide. |
| Market-data provider or aggregator | A broader reference across markets or a historical series | Check which markets and calculation the provider includes; an aggregate is not the price guaranteed on any one exchange. The developer guide describes aggregators as another source of exchange-rate data. |
When the price will inform a transaction
For a payment or trade decision, compare at least two independent data sources, then check the rate actually available on the exchange you plan to use. The Bitcoin Developer Guide recommends comparing independent sources when calculating payment rates and notes that exchange-rate data is available through exchange APIs and aggregators. A chart or historical average can help explain past movement, but it does not establish the current executable quote.

Choosing an exchange requires local due diligence
Exchange availability and suitability depend on location. Bitcoin.org’s exchange directory is organized by region and cautions that exchanges vary in safety, security, privacy and control. Use a listing as a starting point, not as a substitute for checking whether a service operates in your jurisdiction and reviewing its terms and safeguards.

BIP 171 documents concepts for an exchange-rate interface, including base and quote currencies, rate types, timestamped historical records and provider metadata such as minimum polling intervals and history availability. It is a technical proposal, not evidence that every exchange or provider implements the same interface. Treat its field names as useful comparison concepts, not universal website features.
