Gold can be bought as physical bullion, through exchange-traded products, certificates, or derivatives, and those choices differ in ownership, costs, taxes, and resale. In the United States, physical gold can also trigger collectibles tax rules. Before investing, understand what you own, what it costs to hold, and how you could sell it.
How is gold taxed in the United States?
For an individual investor, gold is generally a capital asset. Selling or exchanging it usually creates a capital gain or loss; dealer inventory is treated differently. The IRS explains the general distinction between investor assets and property held for sale by a dealer in Publication 544.
Under IRS Publication 550 (2025), gain on gold bullion or a coin held for more than one year can be collectibles gain. The maximum federal capital-gains rate for collectibles gain is 28%; that is a ceiling, not a flat rate that applies identically to every investor or every gold transaction. Holding period, income, netting rules, and the product’s legal form affect the result.
Keep purchase records and cost-basis information, and account for selling costs where applicable. Classify gains or losses as short-term or long-term and ordinary or capital as required. Tax treatment can depend on the specific product and circumstances, so check current-year IRS instructions or consult a tax professional. State, local, and non-U.S. rules are outside this U.S. federal overview.

Can an IRA own gold?
IRA rules are distinct from the tax treatment of gold held directly. The IRS generally treats collectibles acquired by an IRA as a distribution in the year of acquisition, which can lead to ordinary income tax and, where applicable, an early-distribution additional tax.
There are limited exceptions for certain U.S. coins and qualifying gold, silver, platinum, or palladium bullion that meets required fineness standards and is held in the physical possession of a bank or approved non-bank trustee. Check the exact coin or bullion’s eligibility and confirm the trustee’s custody arrangements before a transaction. See the IRS explanation of IRA investments in collectibles.
What does physical gold cost beyond its spot price?
Bars and coins typically sell at a premium over spot—the current market price for the metal. The difference between the purchase price and a dealer’s buy-back offer can also be substantial. A wide spread means the market price may need to rise before you break even, even before storage, insurance, administration, and tax costs.
The CFTC and FINRA recommend asking what a dealer would pay to buy the metal back, comparing the retail price with the value of its weight at current spot, and getting fees and commissions in writing. Their advisory, “Gold Is No Safe Investment”, also cautions investors to consider costs beyond the quoted metal price.
- Purchase premium over spot and any commission
- Delivery, storage, insurance, and administration fees
- Dealer buy-back price and other selling charges
- Applicable taxes
Where should you store physical gold?
Home storage gives you direct possession, but security and access are your responsibility. Professional vault custody can keep metal off-site, but adds questions about the provider, fees, insurance, ownership records, and how to withdraw or sell. No arrangement is universally safest; evaluate the actual terms rather than assuming a particular storage method eliminates risk.

Before choosing custody, get clear answers in writing:
- Who legally owns the metal, and is it allocated to you?
- Where is it held, and who insures it against which events?
- What annual, transaction, withdrawal, and delivery fees apply?
- How are holdings reported or audited?
- How can you take possession or sell, and how long does that process take?
The World Gold Council describes professional vaults as one option for investors who want gold stored on their behalf; the CFTC/FINRA advisory identifies storage, insurance, and administrative fees as possible costs. The gold market is large, but that does not guarantee a quick sale or a favorable price for an individual bar or coin. The World Gold Council’s 2026 edition estimates physical gold holdings by investors and central banks at approximately US$12.6 trillion, plus US$1.4 trillion in open interest through exchange-traded and over-the-counter derivatives. Those industry estimates describe market scale, not the price or speed available to a particular retail seller. See the Council’s gold market size estimate.

For bullion, a practical sale generally involves finding a dealer or other buyer, verifying the item, and arranging delivery or handoff. The price you receive depends in part on the buyer’s offer relative to spot and any fees. Ask for the buy-back price and all charges before purchasing, not only when you are ready to sell.
Exchange-traded products may be easier to trade through a brokerage during exchange hours, but they are not the same as personally holding a bar or coin. Each form has its own ownership or contractual claim, custody and counterparty arrangements, fees, trading access, and potential for delivery. The World Gold Council outlines investment forms including bars and coins, exchange-traded products, certificates, and futures or options.

What are the main risks of investing in gold?
Price risk and no regular income
Gold’s price can fall as well as rise. It pays no interest or dividends, so an investor relying on gold for returns depends on price appreciation, which is not guaranteed.
Costs, custody, and fraud
Premiums, resale spreads, storage, insurance, administration, and taxes can reduce returns. Be wary of inflated prices or fees, unverifiable claims about metal or storage, and pressure to act immediately. Verify dealers and custodians independently, review account statements, and confirm how much metal is actually held. Get costs and the buy-back offer in writing.
Leverage and futures
Futures are contracts, not equivalent to buying bullion. They may use margin, allowing a small deposit to control a much larger exposure. The CFTC warns that a relatively small adverse price move can consume initial margin and require additional funds. This leverage can amplify losses rapidly.
How should you compare ways to invest in gold?
Start by identifying the actual asset or claim, rather than treating every product as “owning gold.” Then compare the relevant costs and risks:
Quick Recap
- Ownership: Determine whether you possess bullion, hold an investment vehicle, have a claim on metal held for you, or entered a derivative contract.
- Total costs: Add purchase premium, ongoing fees, custody or insurance charges, and likely selling costs.
- Resale: Identify the practical buyer or trading channel, hours, verification needs, and any delivery process.
- Custody and counterparty: Establish who holds assets or owes performance, how holdings are documented, and what protections apply.
- Possession: Check whether you can take delivery and under what conditions.
- Tax: Confirm rules for the exact product and account in your jurisdiction; do not assume bullion, shares, certificates, and futures receive identical treatment.
