The two effects may partly cancel. What reaches a paint company’s earnings depends on its full raw-material basket, procurement timing, pricing and other operating costs—not crude prices alone.
How crude prices and the rupee reach paint-company earnings
Paint companies buy a range of raw materials, including inputs whose prices are linked to crude oil. When crude falls, those crude-linked materials may become cheaper, easing production costs. A lower input bill can support margins if the company’s selling prices and other costs do not change enough to offset the benefit.
Currency moves can push in the opposite direction. If the rupee weakens against the currencies used to buy imported or foreign-currency-priced materials, their rupee cost can rise. That increase may offset some of the relief from lower crude prices.
The sequence is therefore indirect: crude and exchange rates influence particular input costs; the full basket and purchasing arrangements determine the company’s overall raw-material cost; and pricing, volumes and other expenses help determine the effect on operating profit. A crude-price decline does not automatically translate into higher earnings.

What a company’s disclosure shows
Kansai Nerolac: crude relief partly offset by currency depreciation
In its FY 2025–26 annual report, Kansai Nerolac said: “Although average crude oil prices declined during the year, currency depreciation partially offset the impact. Consequently, overall raw material prices remained largely stable throughout the year.” This is a useful example of why looking at crude alone can give an incomplete picture: the company reported that the combined effect left its overall raw-material prices largely stable. The same report shows why that input-cost statement should not be treated as a standalone explanation of earnings. Revenue from operations was ₹7,739.23 crore in FY 2025–26, up from ₹7,496.71 crore in FY 2024–25. Operating profit was ₹764.86 crore, compared with ₹780.45 crore a year earlier; profit before tax, before exceptional items, was ₹898.91 crore versus ₹907.42 crore. Why the result varies by company
Paint makers do not have identical raw-material baskets, sourcing arrangements, product mixes or pricing decisions. A broad broker estimate that crude-linked derivatives form a material share of industry raw-material costs is industry analysis, not a universal company-level measure. Procurement can also affect when and how market movements enter reported costs. Asian Paints describes an integrated raw-material procurement-planning solution intended to optimise procurement cost. Business mix is another point of comparison. Asian Paints reported decorative and home décor revenue of ₹30,830.4 crore, or 86.8% of revenue, in FY 2025–26. When comparing paint companies, use disclosures that connect input costs to company performance rather than assuming a shared sensitivity. Check:

- Raw-material commentary: Does management report lower, higher or stable overall input prices, and does it explain the roles of crude and currency?
- Procurement and cost management: What does the company say about sourcing, purchasing plans or other cost actions? These may affect the timing or extent of cost pass-through.
- Pricing actions: Look for disclosed price changes and their timing. Selling-price changes can affect how input-cost movements reach margins.
- Business and geographic mix: Product categories and markets can differ, so compare the company’s disclosed mix rather than treating every paint maker as equally exposed.
- Operating-profit trend: Compare operating profit alongside revenue and account for exceptional items and other income when reviewing broader earnings measures.
The company reports cited here do not establish a comparable crude-and-rupee earnings sensitivity percentage for Kansai Nerolac and Asian Paints. Without a company-published sensitivity analysis, a precise earnings effect should not be inferred from the direction of crude or the exchange rate alone.
