Bitcoin’s recovery no longer appears stalled below the short-term-holder cost basis: Glassnode reported on September 30, 2026, that the price was about 13% above that level. But the move does not prove every recent buyer has broken even or that a durable recovery is underway. Glassnode also pointed to a sell-order wall at $85,000–$85,500 and subdued trading volume.
What “underwater” means in this context
Glassnode’s realized price estimates the average on-chain acquisition price by tracking the price at which each coin last moved. A cohort is “underwater” on this measure when Bitcoin’s market price is below that cohort’s estimated realized price. It is an aggregate indicator, not a record of what any particular investor paid.
Glassnode divides short- and long-term holders using a 155-day movement threshold. Its short-term-holder realized price covers coins outside exchange reserves that moved within the past 155 days; its long-term-holder realized price covers coins outside exchange reserves that have not moved within that period. These categories are based on coin movement, not verified identities or individual investors’ holding periods.
So a price crossing above a cohort’s cost basis does not literally rescue the same people or coins in every case. The estimated level can change as price moves and as coins enter or leave the cohort. It is a market gauge, not a count of investors who have returned to profit.

How the picture changed from July to late September
Glassnode’s July reports described a recovery that remained below two important on-chain levels. By its September reports, Bitcoin had moved above them, shifting attention from the immediate cost-basis gap to whether demand and trading activity could support further gains.
| Date and report | Glassnode’s reported reading | What it indicated |
|---|---|---|
| July 8, 2026 | Bitcoin had spent about five months below the True Market Mean ($76,600) and short-term-holder cost basis ($72,200). At the report’s reference point, price was $64,400, up from $58,300 over the preceding week. Glassnode identified realized price near $53,000 as a possible lower band. | The rebound had not reclaimed either cited threshold. |
| July 8, 2026 | Long-term-holder loss realization accounted for 43% of total realized value, up from 15% in early February 2026. Entity-adjusted long-term-holder realized losses were about $280 million per day, Glassnode’s highest reading since December 2022. | Long-term-holder loss pressure remained elevated in that report. |
| July 15, 2026 | Glassnode said long-term-holder capitulation had turned down from its peak and buyers had absorbed the June lows. It cautioned that this turn alone did not establish exhaustion; derivatives traders unwinding downside bets had not yet been followed by spot buying. | There were signs of easing pressure, but confirmation was incomplete. |
| September 23, 2026 | Glassnode reported Bitcoin above the True Market Mean at $77,000 and above the short-term-holder cost basis. It placed the next major on-chain resistance near $96,700 and said ETF buying had picked up, while making confirmation conditional. | The prior cost-basis hurdle had been cleared, but the report did not call the recovery confirmed. |
| September 30, 2026 | Glassnode reported a short-term-holder cost basis of $73,300, with Bitcoin about 13% above it, and a True Market Mean of $77,200. It identified a sell-order wall at $85,000–$85,500. | Price was above the cohort thresholds, with potential overhead selling still in view. |
The September 30 report also said ETF flows had faded after two days of approximately $1 billion in inflows, while combined spot and U.S. spot ETF volume averaged about $6.4 billion per day—near the low end of its post-ETF-launch range. These are Glassnode report readings, not live quotes: the report’s data cutoffs varied from September 28 to September 30, 2026, and the data could be revised.

Why a cost-basis recovery is not the same as a confirmed bottom
Moving above a cohort’s estimated break-even level can change the market’s pressure points: holders near break-even may be less exposed to unrealized losses, while some may choose to sell into a rebound. But a crossing alone cannot establish how holders will act or predict where Bitcoin goes next.
Glassnode’s July 8 report described the process then as: “The bottoming process is advancing, but not yet complete.” That was a July assessment, not a current October outlook. In its July 15 update, Glassnode likewise warned that a downturn in capitulation did not by itself prove selling exhaustion. By late September, the cost-basis levels had been reclaimed, but the reported sell wall, faded ETF flows, and muted volume left separate questions about the recovery’s strength.

What to watch when judging whether the recovery is holding
- Price versus both thresholds: Track the short-term-holder cost basis and True Market Mean together. Being above one does not mean being above the other; Glassnode’s September 30 figures put the True Market Mean above the reported short-term-holder basis.
- Long-term-holder realized losses: A sustained decline from elevated loss realization would be evidence that this source of selling pressure is easing. The July readings show why a price rebound alone was not enough to establish that.
- ETF flows: Look for persistent buying rather than relying on a brief burst. Glassnode reported that flows had faded by September 30 after two approximately $1 billion days.
- Spot trading volume: Compare volume with its recent range. Glassnode’s September 30 report characterized combined spot and U.S. spot ETF volume as near the low end of its post-ETF-launch range, despite price trading above the cited cost bases.
- Resistance and follow-through: The September 30 report’s $85,000–$85,500 sell-order wall is a dated order-book observation, not a guaranteed ceiling. Whether price can move through resistance with stronger participation matters more than the existence of the level alone.
No one of these measures establishes a market bottom. Together, they help distinguish a price recovery from broader evidence of sustained demand and easing selling pressure.
