Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most people, the best iCloud Drive alternative depends on the services and devices they already use: Google One suits people invested in Google Photos, Drive and Gmail; OneDrive is a natural fit for Windows and Microsoft 365 households; Proton Drive is the privacy-led option; Dropbox is a broad file-sync choice; and pCloud is worth comparing for its recovery and photo-management features.
These services can replace some cloud file-storage workflows, but they are not proven substitutes for a complete iPhone backup. If you rely on iCloud Photos, device backups, app data or Messages, check each need separately before moving files or cancelling iCloud storage.
How to choose an iCloud alternative
Start with what you need to store and what you already pay for. A storage plan may cover more than files: Google One storage is shared across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail, while Microsoft 365 Personal bundles OneDrive storage with desktop Office apps. A lower storage-only price may not be the better value if it duplicates services you already have—or if it leaves an important backup need uncovered.
- Ecosystem: Consider whether you mainly use Apple devices, Google services, Windows or Microsoft 365. Check that the provider supports your computers and phones.
- Capacity and billing: Compare the allowance that fits your files, not only the largest plan advertised. Prices can vary by country, currency and billing interval.
- Privacy: Distinguish default encryption from end-to-end encryption, which limits the provider’s ability to access protected data. Check the consequences for account recovery.
- File workflow: Confirm that sharing, offline access, editing and collaboration features fit the way you work.
- Recovery: Compare deleted-file retention and version history as well as storage size.
- Backups and migration: Confirm that the service covers the particular data you need. Keep an independent copy of important files while moving them; provider pages cited here do not establish a complete migration workflow.

Best fit by ecosystem and use
Google One for Google Photos, Drive and Gmail
Google One is a practical shortlist choice if your files already live in Google Drive or you want storage shared with Google Photos and Gmail. Google’s plan page says the account storage can be shared with up to five others. Check the current plan name and benefits before subscribing, since tiers can change.
OneDrive for Windows and Microsoft 365
Microsoft describes OneDrive as file and photo storage available on PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. The value proposition is strongest when the Microsoft 365 Personal bundle is useful to you: the US page accessed in 2026 paired 1 TB with desktop Office apps. If you only need cloud files, compare the storage-only option against your actual needs rather than assuming the bundle saves money.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Proton Drive for a privacy-first choice
Proton says its free Drive plan includes end-to-end encryption and lists apps for iOS, Android, Windows and macOS, plus web access. Its plan page also describes document and spreadsheet editing. That supports considering it for private file storage, but does not establish that its editing or collaboration experience matches Google or Microsoft in every workflow.
Dropbox for file sync and deleted-file recovery
Dropbox’s Plus plan page lists 2 TB and a 30-day window to restore deleted files. That recovery detail may matter if accidental deletion is a concern. The page’s displayed price depends on market and billing cycle, so the €9.99/month shown in the European page view is not a universal price.

pCloud for recovery and photo-management features
pCloud’s product page describes photo management, browser and mobile editors, previous file versions and recovery for up to 30 days. Those features make it a candidate to compare, but the cited page does not provide a verified price comparison for choosing a specific plan.
Check what iCloud does beyond file storage
“Replacing iCloud” can mean different things. A cloud drive can hold and sync files without replacing iCloud Photos, app data, Messages or a device backup. The provider information cited for these alternatives establishes file storage and selected features, not equivalence to a full iPhone backup that restores app state and settings.

Apple’s security settings also affect what iCloud protects. Apple says 15 data categories—including Health and iCloud Keychain passwords—are end-to-end encrypted by default. With Advanced Data Protection enabled, Apple says that rises to 25 categories, including iCloud Backup, Photos and Notes. Apple describes the feature this way: “With Advanced Data Protection, the number of data categories that use end-to-end encryption rises to 25 and includes your iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, and more.” Apple’s iCloud data security overview.
Advanced Data Protection is an opt-in trade-off, not the default configuration described above. Apple says users must update supported devices and set up a recovery contact or recovery key; Apple cannot recover the protected categories if the account is lost. Consider whether you can safely manage that recovery responsibility before enabling it.

Compare recovery before moving files
Storage capacity is only part of the safety net. Dropbox lists 30 days to restore deleted files on its individual Plus tier, while pCloud describes recovery and previous versions for up to 30 days. Apple documents Recently Deleted retention for certain iCloud Drive deletion workflows; that should not be generalized to every type of iCloud data. Apple’s iCloud storage support.
Before choosing, check the exact recovery period and version-history rules for the plan you intend to use. A deleted-file window and a file-version history are related but distinct protections; neither should be assumed from storage capacity alone.
Plan a cautious move from iCloud Drive
The provider sources cited here do not document a complete, universal migration procedure, so avoid assuming that one service can transfer every iCloud category automatically. For a file-only move, use a deliberate checklist:
- Inventory what you use: Separate iCloud Drive files from Photos, device backups, Messages and app data.
- Choose a plan by actual need: Confirm the storage allowance, device support, privacy model and recovery terms on the provider’s current page.
- Keep a second copy: Retain an independent backup of important files while transferring and checking them.
- Verify the result: Confirm that key folders and files are present and accessible from the devices you use before changing your iCloud plan.
Do not cancel or reduce iCloud storage until you have confirmed which Apple services still depend on it and that the new setup covers your intended use.
